The global Razr 50 introduced a 3.6-inch external OLED display, while the Razr 50 Ultra (sold in the United States as the motorola razr+ 2024) used a 4.0-inch external OLED display. In the U.S., the standard Razr 50 was marketed as the motorola razr 2024.
The change mattered most on the lower-tier model: the standard Razr gained a genuinely useful cover screen, while the Ultra expanded an already-large 3.6-inch panel to 4.0 inches. Motorola’s launch announcement is archived at PR Newswire.
Display sizes and regional names
| Global model | U.S. name | External display | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorola Razr 50 | motorola razr 2024 | 3.6-inch OLED | A major usability step up for the standard Razr tier |
| Motorola Razr 50 Ultra | motorola razr+ 2024 | 4.0-inch OLED | An increase from the previous premium model’s 3.6-inch panel |
Motorola lists both diagonal measurements in its regional family material at motorola.com. Its support documentation also confirms a 4-inch OLED external panel for the Ultra at Motorola Support.
The wording “larger external displays” therefore describes two different upgrades. The earlier U.S. razr+ already had a 3.6-inch interactive external display, according to Motorola’s product page: motorola razr+ specifications. Motorola did not provide a complete predecessor-size figure for the standard model in the launch material, so an exact percentage increase should not be inferred.

What the cover screens can do
These are not notification-only windows. Motorola’s external-display guide describes a range of actions that can be performed without opening the phone:
- Read and open notifications, use quick settings, and unlock with a swipe, face unlock, or fingerprint.
- Customize wallpapers, clock faces, fonts, accent colors, and lock-screen blur.
- Add, remove, and rearrange shortcuts for supported external-display apps.
- Reply to messages, control music and video, and handle other quick interactions.
- Preview the camera, frame self-timer shots, and capture photos while the phone is closed.
- Use selected apps, games, widgets, payments, and navigation actions, depending on software version, app support, model, and region.
Motorola documents these controls at External-display features and its Razr user guide. “Full apps” should not be read as a promise that every Android app is comfortable or fully functional on the narrow outer panel. Some apps have limited layouts or still require unfolding.

Why the Razr 50 Ultra’s screen is different
The Ultra’s 4.0-inch OLED extends around the camera area, giving it more usable space for typing, widgets, camera framing, games, and media controls. Motorola’s regional material specifies up to a 165Hz refresh rate, while launch material cites peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Those are manufacturer specifications: peak brightness is not sustained everyday brightness, and refresh-rate behavior can vary with mode, application, battery state, and software.
The larger panel is part of a broader premium package. Motorola lists a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 platform, a 4,000mAh battery, 45W wired charging, a 50MP main camera, a 50MP 2x telephoto camera, and a 6.9-inch internal display in its launch materials. See Motorola News and the regional specifications. The standard Razr 50 uses a less-premium platform and camera arrangement, so the purchase decision is not only about diagonal size.

Razr 50 versus Razr 50 Ultra: which makes sense?
Choose the Razr 50 / razr 2024 when
- You want a useful cover display without paying for the Ultra tier.
- Notifications, quick replies, camera previews, music controls, and occasional cover-screen apps are your priorities.
- A 3.6-inch outer panel is sufficient and flagship-level performance is not essential.
Choose the Razr 50 Ultra / razr+ 2024 when
- The closed-phone experience is central to your buying decision.
- You want more room for typing and apps, plus the higher refresh-rate option.
- The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, telephoto camera, faster charging, and premium materials matter to you.
The Ultra’s smaller 4,000mAh battery also means buyers should weigh endurance against its display and hardware advantages; no independent battery result is established here.

Names, regions, and imported phones
A U.S. search for “Razr 50 Ultra” may return the same basic device under “razr+ 2024.” Imported units can differ in cellular bands, eSIM behavior, software, language support, charging plugs, warranty coverage, and carrier compatibility. Motorola’s U.S. family page uses the local names at motorola.com.

Software and app support
External-display panels and supported shortcuts can change with Android and Hello UX updates. A case must not obstruct the air-vent opening near the external display, because Motorola warns that obstruction can affect call or media audio. The factory-installed inner-screen protector is part of the foldable display system; it is not a normal removable screen protector.
Durability and value
Foldable hinge wear, inner-screen protection, repair pricing, and warranty terms deserve more attention than on a conventional slab phone. A larger cover display can reduce the need to unfold the phone, but it can also encourage more interaction with a device whose appeal partly comes from limiting interruptions. Motorola’s “largest external display” language is a launch-positioning claim and should be understood as Motorola’s comparison for flip phones at that time, not an independently measured permanent market ranking.

What happened after the announcement?
The Razr 50 family was a 2024 launch, not a current-generation announcement in 2026. Availability, pricing, software support, stock, and retailer promotions vary by country and date. Motorola India’s launch material listed the Razr 50 Ultra at ₹89,999 with pre-orders beginning July 10, 2024, but that regional launch price is not a U.S. price and should not be converted into a current recommendation: Motorola’s launch video.
For buyers comparing the two original models, the practical verdict is clear: the standard Razr 50 delivered the more dramatic cover-screen improvement for mainstream users, while the Razr 50 Ultra offered the most capable closed-phone experience and stronger supporting hardware. Neither model should be judged on screen size alone.
