Which platform has more audience potential?
Meta reported 500 million monthly active users on Threads on June 16, 2026. Bluesky’s FAQ said it had over 44 million users as of May 2026. These are dated company-reported measures with different wording and reference points; they should not be treated as an audited, like-for-like comparison or used to predict how many people will see a particular publisher’s posts.
Audience fit matters more than the headline total. A publisher’s potential conversation depends on whether its readers, sources and relevant communities actually use the platform. Meta also said in a July 1, 2025 announcement that more than a third of daily Threads users with connections followed mostly different accounts on Threads than on Instagram. How do discovery feeds and algorithms differ?
Threads: public custom feeds and personalization
Threads lets people explore, share and pin public custom feeds, and set a custom feed as their default. Meta also describes controls for personalizing feed ordering. For a publisher, these options offer additional ways for readers to encounter topic-focused content, but they do not guarantee placement or distribution.
Bluesky: selectable feeds and a developer ecosystem
Bluesky emphasizes user choice over the feeds that shape the experience. Users can select feeds made by others, while developers can build feed generators. That model may appeal to publishers whose subjects have active, well-curated communities, or to teams that want discovery organized around specific interests.

Both platforms therefore offer custom-feed discovery, but neither feature alone proves that one platform will deliver more impressions or replies for a particular account.

Meta has announced additional social features over time. Its June 16, 2026 update reported the 500 million monthly active user milestone and described Communities and Your Algo, a feature for temporary topic preferences that was rolling out in certain named markets. Availability is geographically specific and can change; consult Meta’s announcement for the rollout details.
Bluesky: feeds, portability and developer options
The cited Bluesky documentation highlights selectable feeds, a starter kit for developers building feed generators, and account portability. Those are useful capabilities for publishers focused on community discovery or a more open ecosystem. The cited sources do not establish a native creator-analytics offering equivalent to the Threads Insights metrics listed above, so do not assume the measurement workflows are interchangeable.

Meta documents reply approval and audience controls, including follower-only settings. These can help publishers shape who participates in a conversation, though they do not remove the need to monitor replies or set community expectations.
Bluesky moderation controls
Bluesky documents mute, block and report functions, plus third-party labeling services that users can choose to subscribe to. Feed choice and moderation labels give users different ways to shape what they see. They are layered controls, not a promise that every unwanted post or interaction will be filtered out.

How should a publisher choose?
- Start with Threads if Meta ecosystem connections, web-based feed monitoring and built-in Insights are central to your workflow.
- Start with Bluesky if selectable community feeds, developer-created discovery and account portability matter more to your publishing strategy.
- Use both if your intended readers are active on both platforms and you have the capacity to maintain each presence with platform-appropriate posts and replies.
There is no evidence here that one platform universally performs better by industry, audience type or engagement rate. Treat the choice as an account-specific question, not a platform-wide ranking.
How to compare engagement on your own accounts
A controlled trial can help you decide where to invest time. This is a practical method, not a claim that either service guarantees a result.
