Choose Twitch if your content is built around live sessions and a Twitch-native community; choose YouTube if you want livestreams to sit alongside long-form videos or Shorts in a broader publishing plan. Neither platform is proven to deliver better discovery or earnings for every creator. Your format, community habits, monetization stage, and simulcasting plans matter more than a universal winner.

Platform culture can differ by niche, so compare the interaction your intended viewers actually use rather than assuming every audience behaves the same way. Twitch reported that 70% of new Twitch viewers came to Twitch on mobile in its June 2026 announcement; that is Twitch’s own figure, not an independently verified industry statistic. The announcement also describes its format updates: Twitch’s Dual Format and 2K announcement.

Which platform should you choose?
Choose Twitch when live is the main event
- Your schedule centers on live sessions rather than an extensive on-demand video library.
- You want to build around Twitch’s live-native community and the ways your niche interacts there.
- You are prepared to meet the applicable program requirements before relying on payouts.
Choose YouTube when you want a wider publishing home
- You plan to combine livestreams with long-form uploads or Shorts.
- You want live broadcasts to be one part of an ongoing video publishing strategy.
- Horizontal or vertical live formats fit your production and audience needs; check which features work in each format.
Decide with your own channel data
Official platform features do not establish a universal winner for audience growth, algorithmic discovery, or earnings. If you already have viewers on one service, compare your own retention, returning viewers, chat participation, and revenue data before moving or splitting your effort. A second platform also means additional moderation and community-management work; that is an operational trade-off, not a platform rule.
How monetization eligibility differs
Twitch: access to tools is not the same as payout eligibility
In a May 13, 2026 announcement, Twitch said eligible streamers globally gained access to tools including Bits, subscriptions, emotes, badges, and Channel Points, while Partner or Affiliate status is still required for payouts. The announcement listed revised Affiliate milestones: 4 hours streamed, 4 different streaming days, at least 3 average concurrent viewers on 4 different days, and 25 followers. YouTube: earlier fan-funding access and full ad revenue have different thresholds
YouTube’s expanded Partner Program overview gives the usual entry threshold as 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. This can provide earlier access to eligible fan-funding and Shopping features in available regions, subject to feature-specific requirements. Confirm that the program and the features you want are available in your country: YouTube’s expanded YPP overview.
For full ad-revenue eligibility, YouTube’s current YPP overview lists 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, plus policy and account requirements and channel review. Livestream hours from streams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD do not count toward that watch-hour threshold. See YouTube’s YPP overview, accessed October 3, 2026. Can you stream on Twitch and YouTube at the same time?
Twitch’s current Terms of Service allow simulcasting, but set conditions. The Twitch viewing experience must not be worse than the experience on another service; you must not direct Twitch viewers to leave for the simulcast; and you must not combine other-platform activity on your Twitch stream. Review the current Twitch Terms of Service and any agreement you have signed before simulcasting.

Practical decision checklist
- Content: Is live the whole product, or one format among videos and Shorts?
- Community: Where do your intended viewers already participate, and which interaction features will you actually use?
- Monetization: Which specific eligibility stage and feature are realistic for your channel? Do not treat Twitch tool access, Twitch payout status, YouTube’s expanded YPP, and full YouTube ad-revenue eligibility as equivalent.
- Production: Can your workflow deliver the formats and quality you need, and can you manage the added workload if you simulcast?
- Evidence: Compare results using your own analytics; the cited platform features do not show that either service guarantees better discovery or income.
