Twitch Emotes Not Working? Fix Missing, Static, or Plain-Text Emotes

Find the right fix for Twitch emotes that are missing, plain text, static, channel-specific, or broken only in OBS, mobile, or third-party extensions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Twitch emotes not working” can describe several different problems: native emotes may appear as text, a subscriber emote may be unavailable, BTTV/FFZ/7TV emotes may not load, animation may be disabled, or emotes may work on Twitch.com but fail in OBS or the mobile app. Identify which category you have before changing settings.

The quickest desktop diagnosis is to check Twitch Status, test a known native Twitch emote, check Chat Settings → Animated Emotes, then try a private window with extensions disabled. Update the browser, clear Twitch site data, and test another browser, network, or device only if those checks do not isolate the fault.

First, identify what is failing

Symptom Most likely category
Every emote appears as plain text Chat rendering, cache, extension conflict, network/CDN request, or unsupported client
Only one channel’s emotes are missing Subscription, tier, channel configuration, changed code, or channel-specific extension issue
Native Twitch emotes work but BTTV, FFZ, or 7TV emotes do not Third-party extension or service integration
Emotes appear but do not move Animated-emote setting, client limitation, static fallback, or OBS/overlay rendering
An emote’s text code works but it is absent from the picker Picker cache, local filter, extension menu issue, or channel availability
Emotes work on Twitch.com but not in OBS Chat dock, browser source, overlay, or unsupported integration
Desktop works but the mobile app does not Mobile-client limitation, app state, or network difference

Native Twitch emotes are delivered by Twitch and include global, subscriber, and applicable Bits/Cheer emotes. BTTV (BetterTTV), FrankerFaceZ (FFZ), and 7TV emotes require a compatible extension, user script, or integration; they are not equivalent to native Twitch emotes.

Fix native Twitch emotes in the least disruptive order

1. Check Twitch Chat status

Open status.twitch.com and inspect the separate Chat component, not only video or the general website. If Chat is degraded, wait for the incident to clear instead of repeatedly reinstalling extensions. On August 18, 2026, Twitch listed Login, Web, Chat, Video, Broadcasting, and Purchases as operational, so a persistent issue on that date would have been more likely local, account-specific, channel-specific, or third-party.

2. Test a known native emote

Use a standard global Twitch emote in the affected channel. If it works while a custom emote fails, Twitch chat rendering is probably healthy and the problem is eligibility or the third-party provider. If the native emote also fails, continue with browser, session, network, and device tests.

3. Check animated-emote settings

  1. Open the affected channel on Twitch.com.
  2. Click the gear icon in chat to open Chat Settings.
  3. Find the animated-emote control under chat appearance/settings and enable it.
  4. Test a known animated emote again.

Twitch’s Chat Basics documentation explains that disabling this control shows static versions. A static image therefore does not necessarily mean the emote is broken; the client, provider, OBS, or overlay may also be serving a static fallback.

4. Use a private window as an isolation test

Open an incognito or private window, sign in if necessary, and test the same channel with one native emote. If it works there, a browser extension, stale session, cookie, or cached resource is likely involved. Private browsing is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee of a completely clean environment.

5. Disable extensions, then restore them one at a time

Temporarily disable BTTV, FFZ, 7TV, ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, overlays, and other page-modifying extensions. Reload Twitch after doing so. Twitch recommends this approach for supported-browser problems (supported browsers troubleshooting).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enable only the extension that supplies the emote you need.
  2. Reload every open Twitch tab.
  3. Test the emote.
  4. Re-enable other extensions individually until a conflict reappears.

Running several systems that modify the same chat interface can create conflicts, so controlled testing is safer than installing every provider at once.

6. Update the browser and clear Twitch site data

Twitch officially supports the two latest versions of Chrome and Firefox, the latest Edge, Safari, Opera, and Opera GX. Version numbers change, so update through the browser’s own About or Update page. After extensions are disabled:

  1. Close Twitch tabs.
  2. Clear cookies and site data for Twitch.
  3. Fully restart the browser.
  4. Sign in again and test native and custom emotes separately.

Clearing site data can sign you out and remove local preferences. Twitch places cache/cookie clearing after extension checks in its troubleshooting guidance.

7. Compare another browser, network, and device

Try another supported browser, a different network, and another device. Also test without a VPN, DNS filter, firewall web shield, or traffic-routing software. These comparisons distinguish browser-specific failures from DNS, CDN, account, channel, and network problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subscriber and channel emotes

For viewers

  • Confirm the active Twitch account is subscribed to the channel.
  • Check that the subscription is current and provides the emote’s tier.
  • Test a second subscriber emote from that channel.
  • Try the emote in another channel where you have access.
  • Ask whether the streamer changed the code, prefix, tier, or emote recently.

If other users can see an emote but you cannot, you may be logged into a different account, using a client without the required third-party support, or viewing a subscriber-only emote without eligibility.

For streamers

In Creator Dashboard → Emotes, verify the emote’s channel, tier, prefix, and code. Check whether it is pending, rejected, disabled, replaced, or still processing. Test from a logged-out browser or separate viewer account. Twitch documents this management area in its Creator Dashboard guide and explains prefixes and availability in the Subscriber Emote Guide.

BTTV, FFZ, and 7TV troubleshooting

BetterTTV (BTTV)

BTTV’s official Chrome listing describes global and per-channel custom emotes. If native emotes work but BTTV does not:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update BTTV and open its settings.
  2. Confirm BTTV emotes and animated BTTV emotes are enabled.
  3. Confirm the correct Twitch account and channel.
  4. Reload all Twitch tabs.
  5. Test with FFZ and 7TV disabled.
  6. Clear Twitch site data before considering a reinstall.

The listing showed version 7.7.25 on July 17, 2026; extension versions are volatile and should be checked in the store rather than treated as permanent.

FrankerFaceZ (FFZ)

FFZ can add custom and animated emotes and display emotes from other services. Its site notes that a browser-store extension can lag behind the user-script version while approval is pending, and that open Twitch tabs should be refreshed after installation or updating.

  • Chrome may use the extension or user-script route.
  • Edge may require allowing extensions from other stores.
  • Safari is directed toward a user-script approach.
  • Older Edge versions are not supported.

Do not add a user-script loader unless you actually need that route; every additional extension adds another possible conflict.

7TV

If only 7TV emotes fail, update the integration, confirm the channel has enabled the emote, disable BTTV and FFZ for a controlled test, and reload Twitch completely. Check 7TV Status for the website, API, event services, CDN, and emote-set APIs. On August 18, 2026, those services were listed online, but service availability does not prove that a local extension is configured correctly.

When animation is the only problem

Compare a native animated emote with a third-party animated emote. If both are static in Twitch chat, recheck the animated-emote control. If Twitch chat animates but OBS does not, the source may render only a static asset. If only one provider is static, inspect that provider’s settings and test it with other extensions disabled.

Mobile app checks

Native Twitch emotes may work in the official app while BTTV, FFZ, or 7TV emotes appear as text or are unavailable. Third-party support varies by mobile client and version; a desktop browser extension does not modify the official Twitch app.

  1. Update the Twitch app.
  2. Force-close and reopen it.
  3. Sign out and back in.
  4. Test a native emote in another channel.
  5. Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
  6. Try Twitch in mobile web if available.

If only third-party emotes fail on mobile, treat client support as the leading possibility before treating the account as broken.

OBS, pop-out chat, and overlays

OBS does not automatically inherit Chrome or Firefox extensions. A Twitch browser chat can show BTTV emotes while an OBS dock, browser source, or overlay cannot.

  1. Confirm native emotes work in Twitch’s normal browser chat.
  2. Test the same channel in the OBS chat dock.
  3. Refresh or recreate the dock or browser source.
  4. Check the add-on or overlay’s supported emote providers.
  5. Test a clean browser source with unrelated extensions removed.

Separate the streamer’s local display from the broadcast: an extension can change what the streamer sees without changing the chat messages or video viewers receive.

What a missing emote can mean

  • You are not subscribed, or the emote belongs to another tier.
  • The streamer changed the prefix or code, or removed/replaced the emote.
  • The channel has not enabled the third-party emote.
  • Your provider is disabled, outdated, filtered, or hidden from the picker.
  • The emote is pending, rejected, or disabled in the channel dashboard.
  • Your client supports the emote but not its animation.
  • You are using a different account or client from the person who can see it.

Test a second emote from the same category before concluding that the whole emote system is broken.

When to contact Twitch Support

Contact support when the issue reproduces across supported browsers and devices after status, account, and provider checks. Include:

  • Browser name and version, or Twitch app version.
  • Operating system.
  • Channel URL and exact emote code.
  • Whether native emotes work.
  • Whether the issue occurs in a private window.
  • Enabled extensions, VPNs, overlays, or security tools.
  • Exact reproduction steps, screenshots, or a screen recording.

This matches the information requested in Twitch’s supported-browser troubleshooting guidance.

Decision tree

  • Everything fails everywhere: check Twitch Chat status, account/session, network, and support.

  • Only one device fails: troubleshoot the app or device configuration.
  • Only third-party emotes fail: troubleshoot that provider alone.
  • Only one channel fails: check subscription, tier, prefix, and channel configuration.
  • Only animation fails: enable animated emotes and compare client rendering.
  • Only OBS fails: refresh the dock/source and verify integration support.
