Twenty Twenty-One is a classic WordPress theme that uses the Customizer and block editor together. Install it from Appearance > Themes, activate it, then configure identity, colors, menus, widgets, homepage behavior and CSS in Appearance > Customize. Use the block editor for page content and patterns. The theme includes accessibility features, optional dark mode and a one-column layout, but its Starter Content works only on a brand-new site with no posts or pages.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What Twenty Twenty-One is and whether it still fits a new site
Twenty Twenty-One was introduced as the default theme for WordPress 5.6. It is distributed as a classic PHP-template theme with strong block-editor support: you edit site-wide settings in the Customizer and create posts and pages in the block editor. It is not a block theme, so the modern Site Editor does not replace the Customizer for the entire site.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The official WordPress.org directory lists version 2.9, more than 200,000 active installations and an update date of August 19, 2026. The listed minimums are WordPress 5.3 and PHP 5.6. Those are minimum compatibility requirements, not recommendations for running an old stack; keep WordPress, PHP and the theme updated within the versions supported by your host.
| Item | Officially listed detail | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Theme type | Classic theme with block-editor patterns and editor styles | Use Appearance > Customize for global settings and the block editor for content. |
| Current directory version | 2.9 | Check the update notice in your dashboard before installing or troubleshooting. |
| Active installations | More than 200,000 | The theme remains widely deployed, but installation count is not a performance or support guarantee. |
| Last directory update | August 19, 2026 | Use the date shown in your own dashboard if it differs after a later release. |
| Minimum WordPress | 5.3 | Older WordPress versions should be upgraded before activation. |
| Minimum PHP | 5.6 | Ask your host to upgrade PHP if the site runs an older version; current PHP support should take priority over this floor. |
Its strengths are predictable one-column behavior, a restrained visual system, useful patterns, translation readiness, RTL support and built-in accessibility work. It is a sensible choice for a blog, documentation site, personal site or simple portfolio when you prefer Customizer controls. A block theme is a better fit if you specifically need Site Editor control over headers, footers and templates without writing PHP.

Before you install: checks that prevent avoidable problems
- Confirm that your WordPress installation meets at least WordPress 5.3 and PHP 5.6, then plan upgrades rather than intentionally remaining at those old minimums.
- Take a backup of the database and
wp-content, especially if another theme is currently active or you have custom CSS. - Record the current menu locations, widgets, logo files, background image and homepage settings. Switching themes can change which locations and widget areas are available.
- Have a logo at least 300 pixels wide or 100 pixels tall. For featured images, prepare files at least 610 pixels wide.
- Test on a staging site when the production site has custom templates, page-builder output or theme-specific shortcodes.
How to install and activate Twenty Twenty-One
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard and open Appearance > Themes.
- If the theme is already installed, select its card and choose Activate. If it is absent, choose Add New, search for “Twenty Twenty-One,” select the official theme card and click Install, then Activate.
- Open Appearance > Customize. The available panels are the theme’s control center for identity, colors, background, menus, widgets, homepage settings, excerpt behavior and Additional CSS.
- Open a post or page in the block editor and check that the editor styles resemble the front end. Add a temporary draft if you do not want to alter published content.
- View the site at desktop and mobile widths. Check the header, logo, navigation, content width, featured image, footer widgets and homepage before publishing changes.
Activating a theme does not delete your posts, pages or media. It can, however, change template markup, available widget areas and menu placement. Keep the previous theme installed until you have confirmed the new layout.
Configure the Customizer in the order visitors experience the site
Site Identity
Open Appearance > Customize > Site Identity to set the site title, tagline, logo and site icon. Upload a logo with sufficient contrast and check how it scales on narrow screens. If the logo contains the site name, decide whether displaying the text title as well creates duplication. Save with Publish only after checking the live preview.
Colors and Dark Mode
The Colors panel controls the palette used by the theme. The Dark Mode option is available under Customizer > Colors & Dark Mode when the site background is light. It is opt-in, not an automatic replacement for your chosen palette.
- Visitors can receive a light or dark scheme according to their operating-system color preference.
- In supported contexts, the site presents a toggle so a visitor can switch schemes.
- Preview links, buttons, form fields, images and custom CSS in both modes. A color that passes contrast in light mode can become unreadable in dark mode.
- If the Dark Mode controls do not appear, first select a light site background; the feature is conditional on that setting.
Background image
Use Customizer > Background Image for a site-wide image. Choose a focal point that survives cropping, avoid placing important text inside the image and test the result behind both light and dark text. Compress large files before upload so the background does not become the page’s largest download.
Menus
In Customizer > Menus, create or select a menu, add pages or custom links, arrange items by dragging and assign the menu to the available theme location. Verify keyboard focus, submenu order and the mobile presentation. A menu can exist without being assigned, so check the location assignment explicitly.
Widgets
Twenty Twenty-One provides one widget area below the site content and above the footer. Each widget occupies roughly one third of the available space, up to about 380 pixels wide. Open Customizer > Widgets, add blocks or widgets, reorder them and preview at smaller widths. Three wide widgets can become a long vertical stack on a phone; put the most useful one first.

Homepage and post display
Open Customizer > Homepage Settings to choose between a page that shows your latest posts and a static page. If you select a static page, choose separate pages for the front page and posts page. Under the relevant excerpt or content-display controls, decide whether archives show full content or excerpts. Check pagination, featured images and the first-screen layout after saving.
Additional CSS
Customizer > Additional CSS is appropriate for small, update-safe visual adjustments. Keep selectors specific, add comments explaining why a rule exists and test after theme updates. CSS cannot safely add new PHP functionality, register menus or alter query behavior; use a child theme for those tasks.
Use the block editor and Twenty Twenty-One’s patterns effectively
The theme supplies editor styles intended to keep the editing view close to the published result. It also includes block patterns and styles for common layouts. In the block inserter, search patterns rather than rebuilding every section manually. Documented examples include a large-text section, a links area, contact information, a media-and-text article title and overlapping images.
The theme’s block styling includes border options for Media & Text, Latest Posts, Image, Cover and Group blocks. Columns include an overlap style. These are presentation options applied to the relevant block; they do not turn the theme into a full Site Editor theme.
Recommended Free Tools
| Layout specification | Documented value | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Main column | Up to 1,240 pixels on a 1,440-pixel laptop screen | Use wide images and embeds selectively so text does not become difficult to scan. |
| Wide block | Up to 1,240 pixels | Useful for galleries, tables and media that should extend beyond the text column. |
| Full-width block | Full screen width | Reserve for intentional hero, Cover or decorative sections and test edge-to-edge cropping. |
| Featured image | 610 pixels wide or larger recommended | Prepare a consistent aspect ratio so archive cards do not crop subjects unpredictably. |
| Logo | At least 300 pixels wide or 100 pixels tall recommended | Supply a sufficiently detailed source, then inspect its display size on mobile. |
When a pattern contains placeholder text or imagery, replace every placeholder before publishing. Save frequently while arranging columns and use the block List View to select nested groups that are hard to click on the canvas.
Starter Content: what it does and why it may be unavailable
Starter Content demonstrates Twenty Twenty-One’s patterns and styles by creating an example arrangement through the Customizer. It can be activated only on a freshly installed site that has no pages or posts. On an existing site, the option may not appear because the safety condition is not met.

- Activate Twenty Twenty-One and open the Customizer.
- Choose the Starter Content option, review the proposed changes and click Publish to apply them.
- Replace demonstration text, links and images, then assign your real menu and homepage settings.
Do not delete real content merely to force Starter Content to appear. On an established site, insert individual patterns from the block inserter instead; that preserves existing content and gives you control over each section.
Accessibility and visitor color preferences
The theme documents accessibility readiness rather than treating it as a substitute for accessible content. Built-in measures include a skip-to-content link, semantic HTML landmarks, high-contrast support and keyboard navigation. It also supports visitor color-scheme preferences.
- Use one logical heading hierarchy in every post and page; do not choose heading levels solely for visual size.
- Provide meaningful alternative text for informative images and empty alternative text for decorative images.
- Keep link text descriptive, ensure keyboard focus remains visible and test menus without a mouse.
- Check contrast after adding brand colors, background images or Additional CSS. Theme defaults cannot correct a low-contrast custom palette.
- Test Dark Mode with a real operating-system preference and with the theme’s toggle where available.
Accessibility is shared between the theme and the content author. A well-structured page can remain usable when visitors enlarge text or navigate by keyboard; a page built from images of text or ambiguous links cannot.
Code-level customization without losing updates
Because Twenty Twenty-One is a classic PHP-template theme, durable code changes belong in a child theme or another update-safe extension method, not in the parent theme’s files. Parent-theme edits can disappear when an update replaces those files.
When to use Additional CSS
Use Additional CSS for presentation-only changes such as spacing, colors, borders and responsive adjustments. Keep a copy of the CSS outside WordPress so it can be restored if a site is migrated.
When to use a child theme
Use a child theme when you need template overrides, PHP hooks, custom functions, registered widget areas or structural markup changes. WordPress developer documentation identifies functions.php and add_theme_support() as standard mechanisms for declaring capabilities. A child theme should enqueue its stylesheet correctly, declare the parent relationship and contain only the overrides you actually need.

Where theme.json fits
theme.json is a structured way to control editor settings and styles where a theme supports it. It does not convert a classic theme into a full block theme or automatically provide Site Editor editing for every template. Confirm that a proposed setting is supported by the active Twenty Twenty-One version before relying on it.
Classic Customizer workflow versus a full Site Editor theme
| Decision point | Twenty Twenty-One | Full Site Editor theme |
|---|---|---|
| Global controls | Customizer panels plus standard Appearance menus | Site Editor templates, template parts and styles |
| Content editing | Block editor with patterns and editor styles | Block editor integrated with site-wide template editing |
| Layout emphasis | One-column layout with documented wide and full-width blocks | Varies by theme; template controls are generally broader |
| Accessibility and dark mode | Documented accessibility features and opt-in dark mode | Depends on the individual theme’s implementation |
| Code changes | Child theme and classic theme APIs are familiar options | Often uses block templates, patterns and theme.json alongside any PHP |
| Best reason to choose | You want a stable Customizer workflow and restrained layout | You want visual control of headers, footers and templates in the Site Editor |
Make the choice based on editing workflow rather than the age of the theme label. If your team already knows the Customizer and only needs content-level blocks, Twenty Twenty-One can be efficient. If nontechnical editors must redesign the header or footer without code, evaluate a block theme instead.
Common problems and precise fixes
The theme does not appear in the installer
Check the spelling of the search, confirm the dashboard can reach the WordPress.org directory and verify that your WordPress version is not below the documented minimum. You can also download the official package from the WordPress.org theme directory and upload it through Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme. Never install a package from an unknown mirror.
The Customizer or dark-mode controls are missing
Confirm that Twenty Twenty-One is active; another theme exposes different panels. Dark Mode requires a light site background, so choose that background first. A plugin can also remove or restrict Customizer panels for specific roles. Test with an administrator account and temporarily disable customization-control plugins on staging.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStarter Content is unavailable
The feature is intentionally limited to a fresh site with no pages or posts. Do not erase production content to satisfy the condition. Add the documented patterns individually on an existing site.
The logo or featured image looks blurry
Replace the source with a logo at least 300 pixels wide or 100 pixels tall and featured images at least 610 pixels wide. WordPress may generate smaller responsive sizes, so inspect the original upload and the selected image size in the block settings. Avoid repeatedly enlarging a compressed file.
Best Value
Widgets or menus vanished after activation
Open Customizer > Widgets and Customizer > Menus to reassign items. A theme switch can move widgets to an inactive area and leave a menu unassigned even though the menu itself still exists. Review the footer area and mobile navigation separately.
Custom PHP changes disappeared
If edits were made directly to the parent theme, a theme update may have replaced them. Restore the backup, move the code into a child theme or a suitable plugin, and document the hooks and capabilities it uses. Keep a staging copy for testing before the next update.
Launch checklist
- Theme is active and the dashboard reports no unresolved update or compatibility warning.
- Site title, tagline, logo and site icon are correct at desktop and mobile widths.
- Primary menu is assigned, keyboard navigation works and submenu order is logical.
- Homepage mode, front page and posts page are intentionally selected.
- Featured images meet the recommended width and crop acceptably in archives.
- Footer widgets contain useful, readable content and do not create an excessive mobile scroll.
- Dark Mode, if enabled, has been checked for contrast, images, forms and custom CSS.
- Skip link, headings, alternative text, focus states and keyboard-only navigation have been tested.
- Additional CSS and any child-theme code are backed up and documented.
- The site has been viewed in the browsers and screen sizes your audience uses before publishing.
Maintenance after launch
Review the theme, WordPress and PHP update notices regularly. Read the changelog or update details before applying a major change on a production site, then test the header, navigation, homepage, archive cards, comments, widgets, patterns and dark mode. Keep the parent theme current even when your custom code lives in a child theme; security and compatibility fixes still depend on the parent.
Recheck accessibility whenever you change colors, typography, backgrounds or navigation. A later plugin can inject markup or styles that alter the contrast and keyboard behavior the theme originally provided. Treat every visual customization as something to retest, not a one-time setting.
Bottom line
Twenty Twenty-One remains a practical classic theme when you want a focused Customizer, block-editor patterns, one-column presentation, accessibility features and optional dark mode. Install it through Appearance > Themes, configure the Customizer systematically, use patterns for page structure and reserve code changes for a child theme. Its main limitation is equally clear: whole-site visual editing belongs to the Customizer and PHP workflow, not the modern Site Editor, and Starter Content is restricted to genuinely empty sites.
