Activate it, configure the Customizer, set a static front page, assign up to four section pages, and add a featured image to each page. From the same interface you can control header media, colors, identity, menus, social links, widgets, and page layouts.

WordPress.org introduced Twenty Seventeen as “the new default theme for WordPress in 2017.” It remains a classic theme aimed at business sites, portfolios, organizations, and small companies that want a prominent visual front page without a page-builder plugin. Its signature feature is a front page assembled from separate WordPress pages. Each assigned page becomes a full-width section in a vertical sequence, with that page’s featured image used as the section background.
The theme uses the WordPress Customizer as its main control surface. You can preview changes without showing them publicly, then select Publish when the preview is correct. The Customizer also houses site identity, colors, header media, menus, widgets, theme options, and the static-front-page setting.

Before you start
- Use a self-hosted WordPress installation or a WordPress.com plan that permits installing the theme.
- Have administrator access so you can open Appearance > Themes and Appearance > Customize.
- Prepare a page for each front-page section and a suitable featured image for each one.
- Prepare a header image or short video if you want media above the front-page sections.
- Keep a current backup before changing theme files or adding custom code.
Twenty Seventeen is a classic theme, so its controls differ from the Site Editor used by block themes. On WordPress 5.8 and later, your site may nevertheless show block-based widget editing inside the Customizer, depending on the site configuration.
Install and activate Twenty Seventeen
- Sign in to WordPress and open Appearance > Themes.
- Select Add New, search for Twenty Seventeen, and choose Install.
- After installation finishes, select Activate.
- Open Appearance > Customize. The live Customizer loads a preview of the active theme and a panel of settings.
- Make a small change, verify it in the preview, and select Publish to make the configuration public. Changes left as a draft or scheduled change are not immediately visible to visitors.
If Twenty Seventeen is already installed, skip the search and use the Activate button on its theme card. Activating the theme does not delete your posts or pages; it changes the presentation and available theme settings.
Build a static front page with sections
The sectioned layout only appears when the site uses a static front page. A normal “latest posts” homepage does not expose the same page-section controls.
Choose the front page and posts page
- In the Customizer, open Static Front Page.
- Select A static page.
- Choose the page that should act as Homepage.
- Choose a different page for Posts page if you want a separate blog index. The posts page should generally be an empty page whose title is displayed by WordPress.
- Return to the main Customizer menu and select Publish after confirming the preview.
You can also reach the same setting from the WordPress reading settings, but the Customizer keeps the live preview visible while you make the choice.
Assign the four built-in sections
- Open Theme Options in the Customizer.
- Use the selectors labeled Front Page Section 1 through Front Page Section 4.
- Assign a page to each position. The order of these controls determines the order visitors see as they scroll.
- Select Publish.
Twenty Seventeen exposes four front-page section slots by default. Developers can alter that count with a theme filter, but changing the number requires code and is not an ordinary Customizer setting. If you leave a slot unassigned, that section is omitted rather than displaying an empty panel.
Prepare section pages
Edit each assigned page as normal. Use a clear heading, concise introductory copy, and the calls to action that belong in that section. In the page editor, set a Featured image; Twenty Seventeen uses that image as the section’s full-screen visual. A page without a featured image can still supply text, but the section will not have the intended photographic background.
For the clearest result, select images with a subject that remains visible after cropping on wide and narrow screens. Keep important faces, logos, and text away from the edges because the theme scales and crops the image to fill the section.

Understand the homepage page itself
The page selected as Homepage supplies the front-page container. The assigned section pages supply the scrolling panels below it. Do not expect the body of the homepage page to replace those panels; the section assignments determine what appears in the front-page sequence.
Choose images and header media at the right size

The 2000px × 1200px recommendation comes from WordPress.org documentation published in 2018 and updated in 2024. It is a target for image quality, not a requirement that every upload be exactly that size. Use an appropriately compressed file; oversized originals increase download time without improving the display once WordPress has generated responsive sizes.
Set a header image or video
- Open Appearance > Customize > Header Media.
- For a still image, choose Add new image, upload or select the file, crop if prompted, and confirm it.
- For motion, provide an uploaded MP4 or a YouTube-hosted video through the video control.
- If you supply both a video and an image, treat the image as the loading placeholder and the fallback shown on smaller screens.
- Preview the result at desktop and narrow widths, then select Publish.
Shorter, smaller video files make the page easier to load. A video is decorative media, so ensure the page still communicates its purpose when the video is not downloaded or is replaced by the fallback image.

Colors
Open Appearance > Customize > Colors. Twenty Seventeen offers Light, Dark, and Custom color schemes. Select Custom to adjust the hue slider and preview the effect on text, backgrounds, links, and accents. Check contrast in the preview before publishing; a visually attractive hue can still make body text difficult to read.
Site identity
In Site Identity, set the site title and tagline, upload a logo, and choose a site icon. The site title remains useful for search results and assistive technology even when a logo is visible, so do not replace it with an image that lacks an equivalent text identity. The site icon is the small browser-tab and bookmark image; use a simple square mark that remains recognizable at small sizes.
Menus
Open Menus in the Customizer to create or assign navigation. A menu can contain pages, posts, categories, tags, post formats, and custom links. Give each item a concise label, arrange items by dragging them into order, and assign the menu to the theme’s available location. Test keyboard navigation and the mobile menu after publishing.
Social Icons Menu
Twenty Seventeen includes a Social Icons Menu in the footer. Add supported social-service links to a menu and assign it to that location; the theme displays the corresponding service logos automatically. Use the full secure URL for each profile and remove profiles that are no longer active so visitors are not sent to dead pages.

Control one-column and two-column page layouts
Twenty Seventeen’s page layout setting becomes available after a static front page is configured. Edit a page and choose the relevant layout in the page attributes or layout control shown by the theme.
Two-column layout
In a two-column page, the title sits beside the content and a sidebar can occupy the other column. WordPress.org documents a main content column of up to 525px and a sidebar of up to 326px. This arrangement suits pages that need persistent navigation, a short list of links, or supplementary information alongside the main copy.
One-column layout
In a one-column page, the title appears above a wider, centered content area. The documented main-column maximum is 740px. Choose it for long-form text, galleries, forms, or layouts where a sidebar would distract from the reading path.

These are documented maximum widths, not guarantees that every viewport will render at those exact pixel values. Responsive rules reduce widths on smaller screens.

Place and manage widgets
Footer widgets
Twenty Seventeen provides a footer widget area on every page. Add items such as a short site description, contact details, a navigation menu, or a search control. Keep the footer focused: several large widgets can push the useful content far below the page’s main message.
Sidebar widgets
Blog indexes, archives, search results, and single posts can also display a sidebar widget area. When widgets are present, they occupy the second column. When the sidebar is empty, the content expands into a single centered column instead. This behavior lets you use a narrow reading layout on posts without manually changing every post template.
Block-based widget editing
WordPress 5.8 and later may show a block editor for widgets inside the Customizer. The exact interface depends on the site’s configuration. Add, reorder, and configure blocks in the widget area, then preview the result before publishing. If the block interface is unavailable, the traditional widget controls remain the appropriate method for that installation.

Customize safely with CSS and a child theme
Use Additional CSS for presentation overrides
For small visual changes, open Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS. Add selectors that target the element you want to change, check the live preview, and select Publish. This is suitable for adjustments such as spacing, colors not exposed by the controls, font sizing, and small responsive refinements.

Keep overrides narrowly scoped. A broad rule such as changing every h1 on the site can unintentionally alter archive titles, widgets, and error pages. Prefer a Twenty Seventeen body class or a specific component selector, and test the front page, a page with a sidebar, a post, an archive, and a search result.
Create a child theme for persistent file changes
Use a child theme when you need template edits, PHP changes, custom functions, or CSS that should remain maintainable as the parent theme evolves. WordPress Core states: “It’s considered best practice to create a child theme if you want to modify the CSS of your theme.” A child theme loads the parent’s design while keeping your modifications in a separate directory.
Do not edit Twenty Seventeen’s parent files directly. A theme update can replace those files and remove your edits. A child theme also gives you a clear place to document changes and disable an override later.
Typical child-theme workflow
- Create a new directory in
wp-content/themeswith a unique name. - Add a
style.cssfile containing the child theme header, including the parent theme name or template reference. - Add a
functions.phpfile only when you need to enqueue styles or register functionality. - Copy a parent template into the child directory only when you must alter that template, preserving the same relative path.
- Activate the child theme from Appearance > Themes.
- Test every affected template after a parent-theme update.
Additional CSS is easier for a few declarations; a child theme is the safer boundary for code and template work. Neither option removes the need for backups and testing on a staging site when the change affects PHP or layout structure.
Use post formats and typography features
Twenty Seventeen supports aside, audio, gallery, image, link, quote, and video post formats. Select a format in the post editor when the format control is available, then preview the archive and single-post presentation. Formats are most useful when a site publishes several kinds of entries and wants the theme to distinguish them without custom templates.
The default typeface is Libre Franklin. The theme also includes typography adjustments for Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and other listed writing systems. Review line breaks, punctuation, and character spacing with the languages your site actually publishes rather than assuming an English-language preview represents every script.
Pullquotes can use alignleft or alignright classes. Their final position is influenced by whether the page uses the one-column or two-column layout, so check both arrangements if your site uses pullquotes in multiple templates.
Accessibility and content checks before launch
- Give every meaningful image descriptive alternative text; leave decorative images with empty alternative text when the editor permits it.
- Keep text over header and section images readable at both light and dark color schemes.
- Use a logical heading order in each page section instead of choosing heading levels only for visual size.
- Ensure every menu item has a specific, understandable label.
- Do not rely on the header video alone to communicate a message; the fallback image and page text must carry the same essential meaning.
- Test keyboard focus, skip navigation, form controls, and the mobile menu.
- Check the page at narrow widths, where section images crop differently and the header video falls back to its image.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The front-page sections do not appear
Confirm that Static Front Page is set to A static page, then verify that the selected homepage is not being confused with the pages assigned under Theme Options. Assign at least one page to Front Page Section 1 and give that page a featured image.

A section has text but no background image
Edit the assigned page and set its Featured image. The header image under Header Media does not substitute for a section page’s featured image; they are separate controls.
The video does not play on a phone
Check the MP4 or YouTube setting, confirm that the header image is supplied as a fallback, and test the page on a narrow viewport. Twenty Seventeen uses the image as the loading placeholder and smaller-screen fallback when both media types are configured.
The sidebar is missing
Look at the page type and layout first. Sidebars are available on blog indexes, archives, search pages, and single posts when widgets are assigned. An empty sidebar intentionally lets content occupy one centered column. A one-column page also removes the adjacent side column by design.
Custom CSS disappeared after an update
CSS entered in Additional CSS is stored with the site’s Customizer settings and should not be placed in the parent theme’s files. If file-based edits vanished, they were likely made directly in Twenty Seventeen; move them into a child theme and reapply the changes there.

This can occur on WordPress 5.8 or later. Use the block controls shown for the widget area, or follow the site’s configured widget method. The difference is an editing interface change, not a change to the footer and sidebar locations provided by the theme.
