The historic JVC TV-20240 was a 20-inch TV/VCR combo, but JVC’s support page is archived—not evidence of current production or stock. RetroBox is developing a modern integrated set, but its site still describes early access and says its official prototypes have not been shown publicly. For a setup you can assemble now, look for a VHS/DVD deck whose exact model is documented to send VHS playback over HDMI, or connect a separate VCR to a composite-to-HDMI converter.
Are new TVs with built-in VHS players available?
There is no dependable new TV/VCR category to shop from the available product information. JVC’s archived TV-20240 support page identifies a historical 20-inch stereo TV/VCR combo. Its archived status means it establishes that the product existed, not that it is newly manufactured or available to buy.

RetroBox is a modern integrated-TV/VCR project, not a verified retail alternative at present. Its official site describes a VCR being created from scratch, VHS playback, a CRT emulator, and HDMI, AV, and S-Video connections. It invites early-access signups for Kickstarter and presales and says official prototypes have not yet been shown publicly. TechRadar reported on January 21, 2026 that the product was not then available to buy and described a US-only NTSC plan; those are plans, not confirmation of a current launch or final specifications. Tom’s Hardware also advised waiting for finished-product reviews in its January 18, 2026 report.
RetroBox’s site says: “Our offical prototypes are still yet to be seen by the public, as new stages of development are under way.” The spelling is reproduced as it appears on the site. Until a finished unit, live purchase option, and independent review are available, treat it as in development rather than a product you can count on buying.

Which option makes the most sense for a modern TV?
Choose based on whether you need an integrated screen, HDMI, DVD playback, or a tuner. A VHS/DVD combo can reduce the number of boxes, but the exact model must support VHS video over HDMI; an HDMI socket alone does not prove that it carries the VCR’s output.
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VHS/DVD combo with documented VHS-over-HDMI | One deck for tapes and DVDs connected to a modern HDMI TV | Confirm HDMI carries VHS playback on the exact model and check used condition, included remote, and return terms. |
| Separate VCR and composite-to-HDMI converter | Keeping an existing VCR or choosing a standalone deck | Verify the VCR has composite RCA output and that the converter takes RCA input and sends HDMI output. No specific converter was evaluated. |
| RetroBox integrated TV/VCR | Someone who specifically wants an all-in-one retro-style product and can wait | Confirm final specifications, actual availability, geography, warranty, and independent finished-product reviews. |
| Used TV/VCR combo | Someone who values a single vintage unit over easy replacement | Test the tape mechanism, display, controls, and inputs before buying; confirm return options and included accessories. |
How to connect a VCR to an HDMI television
If you already own a VCR, a composite-to-HDMI converter is one way to connect it to a TV that lacks analog video inputs. The converter must work in the correct direction: RCA composite video and audio in, HDMI out. It converts the connection format; it does not make the tape’s image high definition.

- Check the VCR’s output panel for composite RCA jacks, usually yellow for video and red and white for audio.
- Choose a converter specifically labeled for composite RCA input to HDMI output, not HDMI input to RCA output.
- Connect the VCR’s RCA outputs to the converter’s input, then connect the converter’s HDMI output to the TV.
- Select the matching HDMI input on the TV and play a tape to confirm both picture and sound.
Converter features and compatibility vary; no particular adapter was evaluated here. If the VCR also offers S-Video, that connection may be preferable to composite only if the converter accepts S-Video.

What should you check before buying a VHS/DVD combo?
Confirm VHS playback reaches HDMI
JVC’s archived DR-MV80B support page lists HDMI output with up-conversion for DVD and VHS playback, as well as component and S-Video outputs. That is the kind of model-specific documentation to look for. The page is archived, so any current listing should be treated as used or old stock, and its condition and outputs should be verified.

Distinguish playback from recording and tuning
A combo deck that plays VHS and DVD is not necessarily a recorder or a television tuner. The DR-MV80B is explicitly tunerless, so it does not independently tune over-the-air television. Check the manual or manufacturer’s specifications for the exact functions you need rather than inferring them from “combo” in a listing.
Check condition, accessories, and return terms
- Ask whether the unit can load, play, rewind, and eject a tape reliably.
- Check for the original remote and any required cables; a listing may not include them.
- Inspect the display or playback output and test the inputs and outputs you plan to use.
- Review the seller’s return policy, especially for a used mechanism that may fail under normal playback.
Match the video standard to your tapes
Compatibility is regional. RetroBox’s reported plan is US/NTSC, and the cited JVC product pages are US support pages; these facts do not establish compatibility in PAL markets. Match the deck and tapes to the relevant video standard and local power requirements before purchase.

Should you wait for RetroBox?
Wait if an integrated retro-style screen is essential and you are comfortable with a project that has not reached confirmed retail availability. The official site’s proposed features include HDMI, AV, and S-Video, but the absence of publicly shown official prototypes means final performance and specifications remain unverified.
TechRadar’s January 21, 2026 report described planned prices of $399 for presales and $525 regular, alongside its report that the product was not then available to buy.
