Set up a TV by checking five things: placement and connections, the active input, 4K/HDR compatibility, picture preset, and audio output. Menu names and available features vary by TV brand, model, region, and connected equipment, so use your TV and device manuals for model-specific instructions.
1. Place the TV and plan the connections
Before connecting devices, identify the TV’s HDMI inputs and decide where any streamer, game console, receiver, or soundbar will sit. Check the manuals for the equipment you plan to use; port locations and setup requirements differ by model.

If you are adding a soundbar, follow its placement guidance rather than assuming one position fits every room. For example, Roku advises centering its soundbar with the screen and avoiding placement where sound reflects off a nearby flat surface. Roku’s soundbar setup guidance applies to its equipment, not every soundbar.

Connect an external player or other source to an available HDMI port, then switch the TV to that same input. If the screen shows no signal, first confirm that the device is powered on, the cable is seated, and the selected input matches the labeled port in use.

An external streamer is optional: a TV’s built-in apps may be sufficient. If you do use one, Google’s instructions for the Google TV Streamer (4K) are to connect it to an available HDMI port and select the TV input used by the device. Google TV Streamer setup instructions.
3. Verify the full 4K and HDR signal path
A 4K-capable television by itself does not guarantee that an external source will deliver 4K or HDR. The source, TV input, cable path, and any receiver or soundbar between them may all affect the available format. Check the requirements for your specific devices and connect through ports that support the format you want.

Roku’s guidance for its described 4K connection says playback may fall to a lower resolution if a device in that chain does not support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. NVIDIA likewise advises using a compatible input and notes that some 4K streaming paths require HDCP 2.2. These are device-specific requirements, not a universal rule for every 4K format or setup. HDR options can be specific to an HDMI input. If a source supports HDR but the TV does not display it, check picture or signal-format settings for the input being used, as well as the manuals for the source and TV. Roku notes input-specific HDR settings.

4. Choose a picture preset that suits the room
Start with a viewing-oriented picture preset available on your TV, then adjust it to your room and preference if needed. Names and controls vary; TCL, for example, places picture and display controls within its TV settings. TCL’s picture-settings guide describes its own interface.
There is no verified set of brightness, contrast, color, or sharpness numbers that is correct for every television. Avoid copying numeric settings from another model as if they were universal; use model-specific guidance if you want to calibrate beyond choosing a preset.

5. Set the TV’s audio output
You can use the TV’s built-in speakers or connect a compatible soundbar or receiver. For ARC or eARC audio return, connect the TV port labeled ARC or eARC/ARC to the corresponding ARC or eARC port on the audio device. Sony recommends an authorized Premium High Speed HDMI cable for its relevant connection guidance; check both devices’ manuals to confirm the cable and port requirements for your setup. ARC can carry audio from the TV and connected devices back to a soundbar over the HDMI connection; Roku describes this in its soundbar setup guidance. Roku on ARC.

If there is no sound, confirm both ends are connected to the labeled audio-return ports, then check the TV’s sound-output and audio-return settings. Some systems also require HDMI control (CEC) to be enabled, and setting names vary by manufacturer.
