TV placement can change how the picture looks: room light reflected on the screen can wash out dark scenes and alter perceived colors, while seats far off to the side may reveal a panel’s viewing-angle limits. Distance and height are mostly questions of image preference and comfort—not ways to prevent eye damage. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) says sitting close to a TV does not ruin eyesight, though prolonged viewing can make eyes uncomfortable.
How room light changes the picture
A TV screen reflects some of the light around it. When a window or lamp faces the screen, its reflection can distract from the image, affect perceived colors, and make blacks look lighter. RTINGS describes glare as a significant problem when bright-room windows or lights face a TV, and recommends arranging the screen so direct light does not shine on it. RTINGS’ explanation of TV glare and reflections also notes that setting the backlight or OLED light to suit the room can help the image remain visible; a brighter TV does not remove the reflection itself.

Start with the light source
- If possible, position the TV so windows and lamps are not directly opposite the screen or shining onto it.
- If the screen cannot be moved, try changing the lamp’s position or controlling daylight with blinds or curtains.
- Adjust the TV’s backlight or OLED light for the room, while recognizing that this improves visibility rather than eliminating reflected light.
The Japanese Ergonomics Society’s 2012 English-language television ergonomics guide gives a narrowly qualified example: with a 50-inch TV whose lower edge is 70 cm above the floor, lighting fixtures would be reflected in close to 10% of households in the cited survey context. The guide says tilting the screen forward can lower the probability of a lighting-fixture reflection. That figure describes the guide’s specific example and survey context; it is not a current estimate for all homes. Japanese Ergonomics Society, English-language resources

Matte and glossy finishes involve tradeoffs
Glossy screens can show reflections as more defined, mirror-like shapes. Matte coatings spread reflections more broadly, but can raise black levels or reduce the perceived depth of dark areas. RTINGS cautions that reflection handling depends on more than the finish, so “matte” or “glossy” alone does not establish which TV will look better in a particular room. Why the seat angle matters
Reflections and off-axis viewing are different problems. Even without glare, picture quality can decrease when a viewer sits far to one side. How much it changes depends on the TV’s panel characteristics; some panel types retain picture quality better from wider angles than others. RTINGS evaluates the angle at which picture quality begins to visibly decline, but this is testing and analysis—not a universal engineering standard. RTINGS’ TV viewing-angle test
If people regularly watch from several seats, consider where those seats are and how far they are from the screen, as well as a TV’s viewing-angle performance. The loss is generally less noticeable at greater distances, so the seating layout matters alongside panel behavior.

Choose a viewing distance for the image and the room
There is no single distance that every viewer must use. Sony’s help guide gives a broad recommendation of two to five times the screen diagonal. Samsung’s Canada buying guide explains that distance affects how much of the field of view the screen occupies, and that a higher-resolution TV can be watched closer while maintaining detail. These are manufacturer guidelines, not medical prescriptions or a universally established ideal. Sony’s TV viewing-distance guidance; Samsung Canada’s TV size and viewing-distance guide

When deciding where to sit, weigh screen size, resolution, the amount of the view you want the TV to fill, room layout, and your own comfort. If a close seat makes the image feel overwhelming or uncomfortable, move back; if the picture lacks detail at your preferred distance, resolution may be relevant.

TV distance and eyesight: what the evidence says
The AAO says the familiar claim that sitting too close to a television ruins eyesight is not true. That does not mean long viewing is always comfortable: prolonged screen use can cause temporary discomfort, including blurred vision, aching, dryness, tearing, or stinging. Neither a particular TV height nor a specific viewing distance should be treated as a way to prevent eye damage.
For comfort during extended viewing, the AAO suggests periodically looking away toward a distant object and matching screen brightness to the surrounding light. In an article published June 27, 2024, James M. Huffman, MD, reviewer for the AAO, wrote: “However, it is true that your eyes may feel uncomfortable if you stare at your screen too long.” AAO guidance on sitting close to a TV; AAO guidance on screen-related eye discomfort
