It does not identify or pair with a TV, and it only sends power commands—not volume or channel controls. Whether it works depends on the TV recognizing one of its codes and receiving the infrared signal.
How TV-B-Gone works
Pressing the button makes the remote send a timed sequence of infrared power codes stored in its chip. The TV does not communicate back: it turns off only if it recognizes a code in that sequence and the signal reaches its infrared receiver. The remote is therefore not a programmable universal remote and cannot control other functions.

The manufacturer says popular codes come early in the sequence. It estimates that 90% of TVs will turn off within 17 seconds on the North American/Asian keychain model and within 12 seconds on the European model; these are manufacturer figures, not independently verified test results. The full sequence takes about 69 seconds for North American/Asian and 62 seconds for European models, according to the maker’s explanation of how TV-B-Gone works.

Will it work with your TV?
It may, but compatibility is not guaranteed. The television must recognize one of the remote’s stored power codes, and the infrared beam must reach the TV’s sensor. The manufacturer says some codes are unavailable and acknowledges that some televisions may not respond. A TV that does not turn off immediately may have a code later in the sequence; completing the sequence still does not guarantee success.

TV-B-Gone is intended for televisions that accept infrared remote commands. The supplied product information does not establish compatibility with every TV model or with televisions controlled only through another method.
Choosing a regional model
The ready-made keychain remote is sold in North American/Asian and European code versions. The manufacturer says power codes can differ by region and offers broad regional guidance, but region alone is not a guarantee of compatibility. Check the intended model and region rather than assuming that a video standard determines which remote will work. The maker describes its PRO model as working worldwide; that is a manufacturer description, not a guarantee for every set.

Range, aiming, and obstacles
For the keychain model, TV-B-Gone lists a maximum response distance of 20–50 feet (6–15 meters), depending on the TV and how the remote is aimed. For the PRO, it lists up to 300 feet (100 meters), also subject to the set and aim. These are the manufacturer’s stated maximums, not independently established performance figures. See the official FAQ.
Infrared needs a clear path to the television’s receiver. It will not pass through walls or ceilings, and some glass can block it. If the TV does not respond, move closer, point toward its sensor, and try to clear obstructions; the sensor may not be centered on the screen.

Battery life and responsible use
TV-B-Gone estimates the keychain remote’s battery life at about three months to a year under normal use; actual life depends on use. Its product pages give bars, restaurants, laundromats, ballparks, and arenas as examples of intended settings. That does not establish permission to operate the device in any particular venue. Use it only where you have the authority to control the television.

- Choose the North American/Asian or European model intended for the television’s region, where possible.
- Point the remote toward the television’s infrared receiver with a clear line of sight.
- Activate the remote and allow time for it to cycle through codes. Some common codes may be tried early, but the complete sequence can take about 62–69 seconds depending on model.
- If the set stays on, adjust your position or aim and try again. A lack of response may mean the TV does not use a code in the remote’s sequence.
TV-B-Gone calls the device “an environmental management device” and attributes its use for “philosophical or practical reasons, or simply to have fun!” to inventor Mitch Altman on its homepage. Those are the maker’s descriptions of the product’s purpose.
