TV Antenna Channels Missing After a Scan: How to Restore Them

Try the FCC’s double-rescan procedure first. If channels remain missing, check for a station frequency change and adjust antenna placement before replacing equipment.

If channels disappeared after you scanned your TV, start with the FCC’s double-rescan procedure: scan once with the antenna disconnected, power the TV or converter off for at least one minute, then reconnect the antenna and scan again. If a channel is still missing, check whether its station changed broadcast frequency and try improving the antenna’s position before buying new equipment.

Reset the saved channel list with a double rescan

A TV scan searches for available digital broadcasts and stores the channels it finds. The FCC says outdated information from an earlier scan can sometimes interfere after a station changes frequency. Its consumer alert recommends this sequence; menu names vary, so use the on-screen directions or your device manual.

  1. Disconnect the antenna cable from the TV or converter box.
  2. Run a channel scan with the antenna disconnected.
  3. Unplug the TV or converter from power for at least one minute.
  4. Reconnect the antenna and restore power.
  5. Run a second channel scan.

This procedure is described in the FCC’s June 15, 2009 consumer alert. It is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that every receiver uses the same controls or that every missing channel will return.

Check whether the station changed frequency

A station’s broadcast frequency can change while the channel number shown on your TV remains the same. Antenna viewers may need to rescan so the receiver can find the station at its new frequency. The FCC explains this in its February 4, 2019 announcement. That announcement described a particular transition and does not establish that a station near you has moved recently.

Mount the antenna high, near a window facing local broadcast towers (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels), to avoid obstacles and interference. Actual Reception depends on location, terrain, and weather, always re-scan for channels after moving the antenna. If you have any issues, please contact us. We will provide professional service and a satisfactory solution for you.

Check the affected station’s own notices or local announcements for current information. The FCC’s announcement said stations in the transition it discussed would make on-air announcements at least 30 days before a frequency move; that historic schedule should not be treated as notice of a current local change.

Improve reception before replacing the antenna

Try a higher or clearer position

Move the antenna higher if practical and farther from nearby objects or structures, then scan again. The FCC says repositioning can improve reception in some cases. Its October 6, 2009 antenna guidance discusses antenna placement and reception; its Michigan examples are not a prediction for other locations.

Check VHF and UHF capability if a band may be missing

If the stations you want use both broadcast bands, the antenna needs to be capable of receiving both VHF and UHF. The FCC letter uses VHF for channels 2–13 and UHF for channels 14–51 in its 2009 context. Those historical ranges are not a current station-by-station channel assignment list. Consider a different antenna only if your existing one cannot receive the band needed; a replacement is not a guaranteed fix for reception problems.

Use reception maps as estimates, not guarantees

The FCC’s TV reception map estimates reception using an outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground. The FCC cautions that actual signal strength can differ because of terrain, buildings, trees, weather, and receiving equipment, and that indoor reception can vary significantly. Treat a prediction as a starting point, not proof that a channel must work inside your home.

If the channel is still missing

Repeated scans without changing anything are unlikely to resolve an underlying reception or station-status issue. Narrow down the cause by checking the station’s current broadcast information, confirming the antenna connection, and testing a higher or less obstructed antenna position. A precise diagnosis depends on your address, antenna setup, TV or converter model, and the specific stations affected.
