To turn off speakerphone during a call, open the call controls, tap Audio, and choose the iPhone receiver (the earpiece destination) instead of Speaker. The exact label varies by iOS version and by which audio devices are connected, so you may see iPhone, iPhone speaker, or a device name in the picker.
Switch the current call off speaker
The in-call control changes the audio destination for the call you are on. The call keeps going while you change it.

- Bring the call screen into view. If you have left the Phone app, return to the call by tapping the green call indicator at the top of the screen.
- Tap Audio in the call controls.
- Select the iPhone receiver, or the destination you want, rather than Speaker. If a Bluetooth headset or hearing device is connected, it may appear as an option too.
- Hold the phone to your ear and confirm that the sound now comes from the earpiece or the device you chose.
Apple describes the Audio control as the way to pick where call audio goes during a call. Its guidance on phone calls says you can switch the audio to the speaker or a Bluetooth device, which means the same control also works in the opposite direction.

Muting stops your microphone from reaching the other person. It does not change where you hear the call, so a call playing through the speaker stays on the speaker when you tap Mute. Use Audio to change the output.

Where the call audio can go

Which options appear depends on your iOS version and the devices paired with your iPhone. Apple’s routing documentation names these destination categories; it does not list a fixed menu for every model.
Stop speaker from turning on by itself
If calls keep moving to the speaker, the cause is usually a default route setting or an accessibility option, not the call itself.

Set the default call route
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Touch.
- Tap Call Audio Routing and choose the preferred destination.
Apple says call audio can be directed to the iPhone speaker, a Bluetooth headset, or a hearing device through this setting. The choices you see depend on which devices are connected or paired. This setting changes the preference for future calls; it does not replace the in-call Audio control for the call in progress.

Check VoiceOver’s speaker option
If you use VoiceOver, the speaker may switch on automatically during a call. Open Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Audio and look at Auto-select Speaker in Call. Apple describes this option as switching to the speaker during a call when you are not holding the iPhone to your ear. Turning it off stops that automatic switch.

Scope of these steps
These instructions follow Apple’s published support guidance, including the current iOS user guide (reviewed as the iOS 27 guide) and the Call Audio Routing page from Apple’s UK support locale. Menu wording and available destinations can differ on other iOS versions and in other regions, so if a label does not match, look for the closest option in the same place.
Changing the route needs no purchase or extra app. A headset is an optional destination, not something you need to complete any of the steps above.

Common problems
- No Audio button on screen. The call controls are hidden. Return to the call screen from the green indicator and check again.
- Speaker returns on the next call. Change the default in Call Audio Routing rather than only the in-call control.
- Speaker turns on when the phone leaves your ear. Check VoiceOver’s Auto-select Speaker in Call setting, if VoiceOver is on.
- Bluetooth device not listed. Confirm it is connected and that the route options include it; a device that is not connected will not appear in the picker.
