The reliable workflow is to extract or obtain audio, transcribe it, detect representative slide frames, optionally read text or describe visuals, then align transcript segments and images by timestamp. Keep those timestamps and slide references in the notes so you can check generated prose against the recording instead of treating it as a verified transcript.
How the workflow turns a video into notes
A slide-illustrated note pipeline combines two kinds of evidence: speech from the audio and visual material from the video. A transcript-only summary can miss definitions, equations, charts, and diagrams that appear on screen. Conversely, a slide image alone may not capture what the speaker says about it. The useful output connects the two.

- Choose the input. Start with a local recording, an online lecture, existing captions, or—if the tool supports it—slides or a PDF. Some workflows reuse platform subtitles; a local recording generally needs audio extraction and speech recognition.
- Transcribe the speech. Automatic speech recognition (ASR), such as Whisper, turns audio into text. Prefer time-aligned transcript segments when available; timestamps make it possible to return to the relevant moment. Local and hosted recognition are different privacy choices: a hosted option may send audio to an external service.
- Identify slide frames. A tool can sample frames at intervals, detect scene changes, or combine approaches to find likely slide transitions. Deduplicate repeated frames and avoid capturing during an animated or visual transition where possible. No single detection method is established as best for every lecture.
- Optionally interpret the slide. OCR can extract text embedded in a frame. A vision model can add descriptions of diagrams and other visual content. These steps can improve coverage, but require additional models or setup and can misread or misinterpret material.
- Align and write notes. Associate transcript segments with the slide visible at the corresponding time, then generate structured Markdown. Keep the timestamp and slide reference close to each note so the reader can check the source.
- Export the result. Markdown can link to or embed saved slide images. Some projects also offer a synchronized HTML view that brings video, transcript, and notes together.
What a good Markdown note should preserve
Generated prose is easier to verify when it retains a trail back to both audio and screen. A practical note structure might look like this:

- Definition shown on the slide. [00:04:51] (Slide 7)The exact syntax is up to you; the important part is preserving useful time references and keeping the relevant image near the note it supports. If a claim comes from the speaker rather than slide text—or vice versa—make that distinction clear. This makes it easier to spot disagreement between narration and screen content.

How local is “local AI”?
“Local” describes where particular processing steps run, not automatically every part of the workflow. A setup can run transcription and language or vision models on your computer, while another sends audio, video, prompts, or documents to hosted services. Check each stage: input retrieval, transcription, OCR or vision, and note generation. For online videos, the download or subtitle tool is another separate component.
The lecture-to-notes project documentation describes a pipeline with local Whisper ASR, frame extraction, OCR, a local vision model, and a final language-model writing stage. It also describes linking claims to transcript moments and the slide shown at that time as a design goal; that is not an independent accuracy guarantee. The course2md README says the project prefers platform subtitles when available and uses speech recognition when needed. Its documentation also describes optional proofreading and summaries through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint or a local Ollama setup. Those options illustrate why privacy depends on configuration.

Project documentation is useful for confirming features, but it does not establish a controlled comparison of accuracy or speed. Choose based on the inputs, privacy boundary, setup, and traceability you need rather than assuming one described pipeline is universally superior.

Dependencies are implementation-specific. The lecture-to-notes README identifies FFmpeg and FFprobe as requirements and reports testing on Windows 11 with an NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti with 8 GB of memory. It says CPU fallback is available but slower. That is one project’s reported test configuration, not a general minimum or a guarantee that another model will run well on the same hardware.

The course2md README lists FFmpeg/FFprobe and yt-dlp for online links. The Cue project page describes related ingestion of recordings, transcripts, PDFs, and PowerPoint files, including local Whisper and local model-server options. These are examples of different scopes and setups, not evidence that a particular tool is best for every lecture.

Treat the output as a draft, particularly where small recognition or alignment errors can change the meaning. Check technical vocabulary, equations, numbers, dense diagrams, and moments when a slide changes while the speaker is still discussing the previous one. Confirm important claims against both the transcript and the corresponding frame or video timestamp. The project descriptions explain intended workflows; they do not provide independent accuracy testing or learning-outcome evidence.

- Check a sample of timestamps early, especially around slide changes.
- Compare extracted slide text with the image when a term, symbol, or equation matters.
- Keep a distinction between what the speaker says and what the slide displays if they differ.
- Correct and label uncertain passages rather than letting polished generated prose imply certainty.
