Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo turn off NumLock on a Lenovo laptop, press the key labeled NmLk, NumLk, or Num Lock. If that label shares a key, use the combination shown on your keyboard or in the manual for your exact model. Lenovo lists Fn+F8, F7, and Insert as possibilities on some compact layouts, not as a universal shortcut.
First, identify what NumLock is changing
NumLock can affect different keys depending on the keyboard layout. Lenovo explains that on some compact keyboards, NumLock makes part of the main keyboard act as a numeric keypad instead of typing letters. On keyboards with a separate numeric keypad on the right, it toggles number input for that keypad.

| Keyboard layout | Where to look | What NumLock changes |
|---|---|---|
| Compact layout | Look for numeric legends and an NmLk or NumLk marking on shared keys in the main typing area. | Some central keys switch between letters and numeric keypad input. Lenovo describes this behavior in its numeric keypad support article. |
| Dedicated numeric keypad | Look for a separate keypad on the right side of the keyboard and a NumLock marking, often on a key in or near that section. | NumLock enables or disables number input on the dedicated keypad. Lenovo documents this for the cited LOQ models and selected IdeaPad Slim 5 models. |
Turn NumLock off using your Lenovo keyboard
- Find the NumLock legend. Check the keycaps for NmLk, NumLk, or Num Lock. On compact models, the marking may be printed on a function key or another shared key.
- Press the marked key or its indicated combination. If the legend is on a key with another primary function, use the Fn key only if the keyboard marking or model instructions indicate it. Lenovo lists Fn+F8, F7, or Insert as possible controls on some layouts; which one applies depends on the keyboard.
- Check the result. On a compact keyboard, test a key that has both a letter and a numeric legend. On a dedicated keypad, test one of its number keys. If it still types numbers where you expect letters, or the keypad behaves differently than intended, check the model manual for the correct control.
Lenovo’s support article, “How to use numeric keypad – ideapad, ideacentre,” says the NumLock key converts part of the main keyboard to act as a numeric keypad rather than letters. The article was last modified February 13, 2026. Its examples do not establish one shortcut for every Lenovo laptop.

Do not assume that Fn+F8—or any other single combination—works across the Lenovo range. Identify the laptop’s exact model, then use its Lenovo user guide to find the keyboard layout and NumLock control. Model-specific documentation matters because compact keyboards can place the NumLock function on different keys, and some layouts may not show a dedicated key.

Use Windows On-Screen Keyboard instead
If the physical key is missing, hard to identify, or not responding, Windows provides an on-screen keyboard with a numeric keypad option.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn on On-screen keyboard.
- Alternatively, press Windows logo key+Ctrl+O to open it.
- If needed, select Options on the on-screen keyboard and enable the numeric keypad. Use its NumLock control to change the keypad state.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and turn on On-Screen Keyboard.
- On the on-screen keyboard, select Options and enable the numeric keypad if needed. Then use its NumLock control.
These Windows paths are documented in Lenovo’s numeric keypad support article.

NumLock is not FnLock
FnLock changes how some dual-function hotkeys work; NumLock changes numeric keypad input. They are separate settings, so toggling FnLock is not a NumLock fix. Lenovo’s guide for the cited LOQ models identifies Fn+Esc as the FnLock toggle and describes NumLock separately as enabling or disabling the numeric keypad. If your goal is to stop shared keys from typing numbers, use the NumLock control for your model.
