Choose the setting based on what you want to happen: a screen timeout turns off the display after inactivity, while a sleep timer stops media after a chosen interval. On iPad, Clock has a “Stop Playing” timer for audio or video. Android app timers and Bedtime mode manage app use and bedtime routines; they are not documented as universal timers that stop all playback.
First, choose the right kind of timer
- Turn off the display after inactivity: Change Auto-Lock or Screen timeout.
- Stop audio or video after a set time: Use the iPad Clock app’s Stop Playing option. The cited Android guidance does not establish an equivalent system-wide playback timer.
- Limit app use or schedule downtime: Use Screen Time on iPad or Digital Wellbeing on Android. These are app-use controls, not ordinary display timeouts.
Turn off the screen after inactivity
iPad: change Auto-Lock
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness, then Auto-Lock.
- Choose an interval.
Apple warns that delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption. Some apps, including Maps, video players, and reading apps, may keep the iPad from locking while they are in active use. If the screen remains on, check the app’s settings. Guided Access also disables Auto-Lock while it is active. Apple’s Auto-Lock guidance describes these behaviors.

Samsung Galaxy tablet: change Screen timeout
Look under Settings > Display > Screen timeout and choose how long the device waits before turning off the display backlight. The exact choices and availability can differ by model and software version. Samsung’s menu reference is general Galaxy guidance, so check your tablet’s current settings if the path differs. Samsung’s Screen timeout guidance explains the setting.

Open Settings, then look under Display or Display & Sounds for Display Sleep or Sleep. Choose how long the display should stay on when the tablet is not in use. The power button wakes a Fire tablet from Sleep Mode. Labels can vary by model and software. Amazon’s Fire tablet guidance covers display sleep.

Android settings vary by device. If you cannot find a screen timeout setting, search Settings for “timeout,” “sleep,” or “display,” then select the relevant display setting.
Stop iPad audio or video after a chosen time
- Open Clock and tap Timers.
- Set the duration.
- Tap When Timer Ends, scroll to the bottom of the sound list, and choose Stop Playing.
- Tap Set, then Start.
Apple says the timer continues even if you open another app or the iPad goes to sleep. This makes it the documented option for stopping media after a chosen interval. Apple’s Clock timer instructions show the steps.

Limit app use or schedule downtime
iPad: Screen Time
Open Settings > Screen Time to configure Downtime or app limits. Downtime can make most apps unavailable during the scheduled period, while allowed apps and contacts can remain available. App limits can apply to individual apps or categories. These controls manage access and time spent in apps; they do not simply switch off the display. Apple’s Screen Time guidance explains Downtime and limits.

Android: Digital Wellbeing
Google’s Digital Wellbeing settings include app timers and Bedtime mode. An app timer closes and dims the selected app when its limit is reached, then resets daily at midnight. Bedtime mode can follow a schedule. Device steps vary, and these features should not be treated as a universal timer that stops all media playback. Google’s Digital Wellbeing instructions describe the controls.

If the setting does not behave as expected
- The screen stays on during playback: The app may be keeping the display awake. Check its own settings, or use Stop Playing on iPad if you want playback to end.
- An iPad Auto-Lock choice is unavailable: Check whether Guided Access is active.
- You want fewer distractions, not a darker screen: Use Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing to manage app access rather than changing the display timeout.
- A menu path is missing: On Android, Samsung, and Fire tablets, labels and paths vary by model and software. Search Settings for “timeout,” “sleep,” or “display.”
