Customer signals make email automation smarter only when each one has a clear meaning and leads to a message that is timely, relevant, and permitted. Start with a useful customer moment, decide whether it should trigger a flow or change segment membership, then add eligibility checks and measure whether the automation behaves as intended.
Start with the customer moment, not the tracking feature
Choose a point in the customer journey where a message can help: a new subscription, product browsing without a purchase, checkout abandonment, a completed order, an approaching replenishment window, or an interest the customer declared. Before collecting a signal, answer two questions: what will the recipient get, and why is this signal a sound reason to send it?

Prefer a small set of events with clear operational meaning over collecting every available behavior. A page view, for example, may be too broad to justify a sales email on its own. A product view followed by no purchase may support a more specific follow-up, provided tracking is available and the recipient is eligible to receive marketing.
Available signals depend on the platform and its integrations. Mailchimp documents page views, product views, add-to-cart actions, and purchases for site tracking with connected Shopify, Wix, and WooCommerce stores. Klaviyo documents events such as starting checkout and placing an order. These are platform-specific examples, not a guarantee that every account or store can collect each event. Mailchimp’s site-tracking documentation and Klaviyo’s flow-trigger documentation describe their respective setups.

Choose what the signal should do
A signal can start a sequence, change who belongs to a group, or supply a condition that determines whether an existing flow should continue. A flow is a sequence of automated actions, such as sending messages, triggered by a behavior or event. The key is to match the mechanism to the meaning of the signal.
Use an event trigger for a specific action
Choose an event or metric trigger when one action should start a sequence. For example, a checkout-start event can begin an abandoned-checkout flow. Add a later eligibility check so someone who purchases after entering does not receive a reminder that no longer applies.
Use segment entry for a qualifying condition
Choose segment entry when the meaningful signal is a combination of behavior, profile properties, or history—for example, qualifying as a first-time buyer or a lapsed customer. A segment-triggered flow can begin when a profile organically meets the segment’s conditions. In Klaviyo’s documented model, manually changing a segment definition does not necessarily make profiles enter; the underlying profile data must change so they qualify. Klaviyo explains segment- and list-triggered flow entry.

Use a date trigger for a known milestone
A date property can trigger a message tied to a known milestone, such as a renewal date or birthday, when the date is collected and the message is appropriate. Do not treat a date field as permission to send: eligibility and preferences still need to be checked.

Use lists and segments for different jobs
A list is a relatively static collection; a segment is a dynamic group whose membership changes as profiles meet or stop meeting its conditions. Segments can be used for targeted campaigns, flow triggers, and analysis. Klaviyo’s guide to lists and segments describes these distinctions.
| Use | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keep an ongoing subscriber collection | List | Membership is comparatively static and useful for maintaining a collection. |
| Find people who currently meet changing conditions | Segment | Membership updates as profile properties and behavior change. |
| Start messaging when a customer performs one particular action | Event trigger | The action itself is the flow’s entry point. |
In Klaviyo’s documented trigger model, performance metrics such as email opens and clicks cannot be used as metric flow triggers. A segment can still represent qualifying conditions, but engagement data should be interpreted carefully: an open is not reliable proof that someone read a message.

Set entry, re-entry, and send-time checks
A correct trigger is not enough. Decide who may enter, whether they may enter again, and which conditions should stop a message later in the sequence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Set the re-entry rule to fit the lifecycle. A welcome series is usually intended to run once. A recurring win-back or other lifecycle flow may need re-entry after a defined interval or whenever someone qualifies again. Klaviyo says its new list- and segment-triggered flows default to no re-entry; check the flow’s actual settings rather than assuming a default suits the use case.
- Check changing conditions before messages send. For an abandoned-checkout flow, a purchase after entry should generally make the reminder irrelevant. Use a profile or flow filter to exclude people whose behavior has changed. Klaviyo documents filters that can be evaluated at entry and before later flow actions.
- Review how profiles enter lists. Imports to a list may trigger a list-triggered flow. Before importing existing subscribers into a live welcome list, confirm what the import will do and whether those people should receive the sequence. Klaviyo’s entry and re-entry guidance covers these behaviors.
- Check consent and status at the point of sending. Being in a list or meeting a segment condition does not by itself establish that a person can receive every kind of message. Platform consent-status behavior can affect flow sends; consult Klaviyo’s troubleshooting guidance for list- or segment-triggered flows when a person enters but does not receive a message.
Build consent and data governance into the design
Tracking capability and permission are separate questions. Mailchimp says its site tracking applies to accounts with connected Shopify, Wix, or WooCommerce stores, and places responsibility for managing visitor consent on the publisher using its cookie banner or a consent-management system. Check the rules and setup that apply to your own site and audience before activating behavioral tracking.
Legal requirements also vary by recipient location and message context. In the United States, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guidance says commercial email—including business-to-business messages—must use accurate sender information and non-deceptive subject lines, include a valid physical postal address and a clear opt-out method, and honor opt-out requests within 10 business days. A business cannot transfer its legal responsibility simply by hiring an email service provider. See the FTC compliance guide.
For UK email marketing, consult the Information Commissioner’s Office guidance on direct marketing by electronic mail and its planning guidance. The ICO’s email-marketing guidance was updated April 28, 2026, including discussion of a charitable soft opt-in under the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. The applicable consent or soft opt-in depends on the circumstances; do not treat one country’s rules as a universal rule. See the ICO email-marketing guidance and ICO guidance on planning direct marketing.
Measure whether the automation means what you think it means
Monitor flow entry, sends, skips, and downstream outcomes to find broken triggers, unexpected re-entry, or messages sent after they stopped being relevant. Validate the event itself as well as the email: an inaccurate or ambiguous event can make a perfectly configured flow behave badly.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use engagement measures cautiously. Klaviyo warns that Apple Mail Privacy Protection can register an open even when the person did not read the email. If actual attention matters, a click or another meaningful signal may be more useful than an open alone. Do not treat any single engagement metric as proof of intent without considering how it was collected.
When comparing automation platforms, verify the capabilities that matter to your customer journey: available integrations and events, segment and trigger behavior, re-entry controls, send-time filters, consent and preference handling, plan restrictions, and the effort required to validate data. For example, Mailchimp documents a Standard-or-higher plan threshold for its Event API automation-flow trigger; check the current documentation and your account before relying on that feature. Mailchimp’s behavioral-targeting documentation describes event use and automation details. Platform examples are not a complete or current cross-platform comparison.
