The iPhone 16 Pro did not launch at the rumored $1,099 starting price. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on September 8, 2024, that he expected Apple to keep the U.S. starting price at $999; Apple’s September 9 announcement confirmed it. The Pro also retained a 128GB base model, so the rumored shift to a 256GB entry configuration never happened.
What the iPhone 16 Pro price rumor claimed
A September 6, 2024 report attributed to TrendForce expected the iPhone 16 Pro to start at $1,099 with 256GB of storage, rather than $999 with 128GB. 9to5Mac’s account of the report described a possible change to the entry configuration—not simply a $100 increase for the same amount of storage.
That distinction matters. Against the iPhone 15 Pro’s $999 entry price, a $1,099 starting price would have looked like a $100 increase, or about 10%. But the rumored model would have doubled the starting storage to 256GB. For a buyer who wanted 256GB, the comparison with a 256GB iPhone 15 Pro at $1,099 would have shown no increase in the comparable storage tier. For someone who needed only 128GB, losing that less expensive option would still have meant a higher minimum cost.
The report was a forecast, not an Apple announcement. BGR’s coverage described the pricing reasoning as speculative, including possible component costs and camera changes.

Why a higher starting price seemed plausible
Apple had already used a storage-tier change on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It removed the 128GB configuration, leaving 256GB as the base; the Pro Max started at $1,199, compared with $1,099 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. That raised the advertised entry price, while the 256GB tier occupied the previous generation’s comparable storage-value position. 9to5Mac’s September 8 report and BGR’s analysis explained this precedent.
Pre-launch reports also associated the iPhone 16 Pro with a larger display, camera upgrades, a Camera Control button, an A18 Pro chip, and possible storage changes. Those reports helped make the price prediction sound plausible, but they did not establish that Apple would raise the Pro’s price. The smaller iPhone 16 Pro and the Pro Max were separate configurations; the latter’s prior storage change was not proof the former would follow suit.

What Mark Gurman reported—and what he did not
On September 8, the day before Apple’s event, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said he did not expect Apple to raise the iPhone 16 Pro’s starting price from $999. 9to5Mac reported Gurman’s forecast as a rebuttal to the $1,099/256GB expectation.
That was a pre-launch report, not an official denial from Apple. Gurman’s expectation was later borne out by the announced configuration and price, but the definitive answer came at launch.

Apple’s launch prices settled the question
Apple announced the iPhone 16 lineup on September 9, 2024. The Pro started at $999 with 128GB, while the Pro Max started at $1,199 with 256GB.
| Model | U.S. launch starting price | Base storage |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 Pro | $999 | 128GB |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | $1,199 | 256GB |
The iPhone 16 Pro therefore kept the prior $999/128GB entry structure. The prediction that it would begin at $1,099 was wrong; the storage-based explanation behind that prediction was nevertheless grounded in a strategy Apple had used for the Pro Max.

How to interpret the $999 figure
The $999 amount was the U.S. advertised launch starting price before taxes. It was not a promise that every buyer would pay exactly $999 out of pocket: taxes, carrier financing, activation terms, trade-in credits, AppleCare+, and accessories could change the final cost. Prices outside the U.S. can differ because of currency conversion, taxes, duties, and regional pricing decisions.
As of August 2026, the iPhone 16 Pro is a previous-generation model rather than part of Apple’s main current iPhone lineup. Apple’s iPhone page reflects its current lineup, while 9to5Mac’s September 2025 lineup report said Apple discontinued the 16 Pro and Pro Max after the iPhone 17 launch. That context does not change what the phone cost at launch; it does mean availability and prices for remaining or used units depend on the seller and should be checked at the time of purchase.
