When an AI app won’t install, stalls during download, or crashes after it opens, the failure almost always sits at one specific stage. Fixing the wrong stage wastes time: reinstalling does nothing for an unsupported Mac, and restarting a phone does nothing for a sign-in error that happens after the app has already installed. Work through the stages in order, confirm which one you’re in, and then apply the steps for that stage.
Most of the official vendor guidance available for this problem covers ChatGPT, so the platform steps below use it as the main reference. The general principles apply to other AI apps, but check each app’s own store listing and support pages for its exact requirements.

Identify which stage failed
Each stage has different symptoms and different first checks. Match what you see to the closest row before changing anything on the device.

The last row is a separate problem. A sign-in or connection error that appears after the app has opened does not mean the installation failed, and reinstalling rarely fixes it.

Check compatibility and availability first
Before trying any fix, confirm that the device and operating system can run the current version of the app. OpenAI’s published requirements, as of the guidance we reviewed, are below. Operating-system and store requirements change with each release, so check the live listing on the day you install.

If the device fails any of these checks, reinstalling will not help. Choose a different route instead:

Install only from the official channel
Use the publisher’s official distribution channel. OpenAI directs Android users to Google Play and tells them to verify that the publisher is OpenAI before installing. On Windows, the ChatGPT app is distributed through the Microsoft Store. On Mac, OpenAI’s download page detects whether the Mac uses Apple Silicon or Intel and offers the matching installer.

A file from an unofficial source can fail to install, can be a different build from the one the publisher ships, and can create a security problem that is much harder to diagnose than a stuck download.
Fix a stuck download on Android
If the Google Play download is stuck, work through these checks in order. Google’s Play Store guidance lists the same basics for any app, so none of them is specific to AI apps.

- Confirm the connection is strong. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see whether the download resumes.
- Check available storage. Google says that less than 1 GB free may mean there is not enough space to install apps. Open the device’s storage settings and free space if needed.
- Install any pending system updates, then restart the device.
- Close the Play Store completely, reopen it, and retry the download.
- Check that automatic date and time is turned on in the device’s date and time settings. Incorrect clock settings can cause store and sign-in problems.
If none of these resolves the download, the problem is probably on the store or account side. Retry later, and avoid repeated reinstall attempts, which add to the queue without changing the outcome.
Fix an app that installs but crashes or will not open
A crash after installation calls for the app’s own failure steps first. For ChatGPT on iOS, OpenAI’s guidance is to relaunch the app. If the crash continues, uninstall the app, then download it again from the App Store.
Windows: Repair and Reset
On Windows, the ChatGPT app can be reset through Settings. OpenAI documents this path:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps, then Installed Apps.
- Select ChatGPT, then choose Advanced Options.
- Select Reset.
Microsoft’s general guidance for installed programs is to restart the device first, then use Repair if the option is available, and use Reset only if Repair does not help. Apps installed from the Microsoft Store also have separate Store troubleshooting steps. These are general Windows steps. They are not a guaranteed fix for every ChatGPT error, and the reset removes local app data, so sign in again afterward.
Mac: reinstall from the official installer
On Mac, confirm that macOS 14 or later is installed and that the installer matches your chip type. If the app will not open, delete it, then download the installer again from OpenAI’s download page so the correct version for your processor is selected.

Sign-in and connection failures are a separate problem
Some errors occur after installation, when the app tries to reach its service or sign you in. On Android, the ChatGPT app attempts login through Chrome or Brave and shows an error if neither browser is available. Installing or reinstalling the app does not fix a missing browser. Install one of those browsers, then try signing in again.

OpenAI’s help guidance states: “Connecting an app does not create additional source-system permissions.” A failure to access data from a connected service is a permissions or account question, not a sign that the app failed to install.
When to stop retrying and contact support
If the steps above do not resolve the problem, stop repeating them and gather what the publisher will need. Record the following before contacting support:
- The app name and version, if the app shows one
- The device model, such as the iPhone model, Mac chip type, or Windows device
- The operating system version
- The exact error text or code, copied rather than paraphrased
- When the failure happens: during download, during install, at launch, or at sign-in
- Where the installer came from
- Each step already tried, in order
- A screenshot of the error, where that is practical
Stop reinstalling when the real cause is one of three things: the hardware or OS is unsupported, the account or region is not eligible, or an administrator policy blocks installation. In those cases, repeated attempts will not change the result, and the fix sits outside the device’s own settings.
