On October 1, 2026, the board of the Center for Humane Technology (CHT), which Tristan Harris co-founded, announced that the organization will wind down its in-house policy, litigation, research and other programs, reduce staff in those areas, and concentrate on founder-led public communication and influence over decision-makers. WIRED reported on October 8 that nine of CHT’s 16 non-founder employees are departing. The board’s announcement does not give a layoff total, so “laying off most staff” reflects WIRED’s departure count rather than a figure CHT has confirmed.
What the board announced
The board’s strategic update is the primary source for the change. It says CHT will step back from several areas of work and reduce the staff who carry them out. The update names the following as wound down:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- In-house research coordination
- Policy and litigation advisory work
- Evaluations of the psychosocial impacts of AI
- A planned fellows program
The board also says it will use CHT’s reach to highlight promising work by other organizations in the AI ecosystem, rather than building that work in-house. The Stop AI Drift campaign continues through the end of October to complete a milestone phase. An independent organization that had been explored to carry programmatic work forward will not launch.

#1 Best Overall
| Claim | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy shift and wind-down of in-house programs, dated October 1, 2026 | CHT board strategic update | Announced by the board |
| Staff reductions in policy, litigation, research and other programs | CHT board strategic update | Announced by the board; no total number given |
| Nine departures from 16 non-founder employees, including executive director Julie Guirado and senior director of strategy Camille Carlton | WIRED, October 8, 2026 | Reported by WIRED; not stated by the board |
| Annual budget of roughly $6 million and a similar amount in reserves | WIRED, 2026 | Reported by WIRED; not in the board update |
| Accounts from 16 former workers describing years of internal debate over direction | WIRED, 2026 | Former employees’ assessments, not board findings |
The gap between the two sources is the main reason the headline needs care. A departure count out of 16 non-founder staff is a majority, but departures and layoffs are not the same thing, and the board has not put a number on either.
What “founder-led” means here
In the board’s description, the founders will lead the organization, supported by chief of staff Julie Johnston. Co-founder Randy Fernando will serve as interim executive director during the transition. The work itself is narrowed to three channels:
- Public education, aimed at broad audiences
- Targeted briefings for decision-makers
- Private coordination with people who can influence policy and industry behavior
The board frames the change in its own words: “We have decided to refocus CHT where we believe it can contribute most: founder-led public communication and decision-maker influence.”

The board’s explanation is organizational rather than financial. It says that running a nimble communications operation alongside a full programmatic institute inside a small organization created persistent tradeoffs in priorities, messaging, pace, situational analysis and leadership attention. CHT says it will now concentrate talent, funding and leadership attention on the two capabilities it considers distinctive: communicating with broad audiences and engaging influential decision-makers.
The board also addressed the human side of the decision: “This is a strategic shift, not a reflection of the outstanding contributions and impact of our talented and committed team.”
Former staff accounts and the board chair’s response
WIRED reports that 16 former workers described years of internal debate over the organization’s direction and strategy. Those accounts are separate from the board’s explanation, and they describe the organization’s past conflicts rather than the current plan. WIRED also reports that board chair Premal Shah disputed some former employees’ characterization of CHT’s culture. In a statement to WIRED, Shah said: “This moment of accelerated AI risk demands we focus on one strategy, and we have chosen to focus on what we have always done best so that we can meet the moment.”

Audience figures CHT cites
CHT’s board update includes audience metrics. These are the organization’s own reported numbers, not independently audited figures:

How to read the shift
The board presents this as a choice between two modes of work. The comparison below is analysis, not established fact. It uses the axes that matter most for judging the trade-off, and the cells describe likely strengths and weaknesses rather than measured outcomes.
Best Value
| Axis | Founder-led communication and influence (CHT’s stated direction) | Team-led institutional work (what is being wound down) |
|---|---|---|
| Audience reach | Strong; relies on founders’ public profile and media presence | Narrower, mostly reached through reports, litigation and policy channels |
| Speed and agility | Likely faster, since fewer people must align on each message | Slower, because programs require staff coordination and planning |
| Continuity of research capacity | Weaker; ongoing evaluation work is no longer in-house | Stronger; standing staff carry knowledge across projects |
| Institutional leverage | Depends on access to decision-makers and on founders’ availability | Built on formal advisory, legal and policy channels that outlast any one person |
| Dependence on founder participation | High; the model is designed around the founders | Lower; work can continue without any single leader |
What is still unclear
The board’s announcement does not specify the post-transition headcount, how the budget will be allocated, or a full operational schedule beyond the end-of-October milestone for Stop AI Drift. WIRED’s budget figures come from its own reporting and are not part of CHT’s official update. Readers should treat the October 1 board statement as the reference point and check later updates from CHT for changes as the transition proceeds.
