Choose Asana if you need several ways to view projects and want more explicit support for templates, rules, reporting, and work across projects. Neither is a universal winner: the better fit depends on how your team organizes work and which features its plan includes.
How do Trello and Asana organize work?
Trello: boards, lists, and cards
Trello’s core model is a board divided into lists, with cards representing tasks or pieces of work. Cards can include assignees, due dates, files, and checklists. Trello also highlights automation, integrations called Power-Ups, and templates. This structure is a natural fit when a team wants to see work move between stages on a shared board. Trello’s project-management overview describes using the app to keep projects organized, deadlines on track, and teammates aligned.

Asana: tasks with multiple project views
Asana Projects can be organized in list, board, calendar, timeline/Gantt, and custom views. Projects can have sections and templates; rules can automate routine actions such as assignments or due-date changes. Asana also describes reporting for monitoring progress. These options can help teams that want different ways to inspect the same project or need more structure around recurring work. Asana’s Projects feature page says the feature is available on Personal, Starter, Advanced, and Enterprise plans, though other capabilities vary by plan.
Which app fits your workflow?
| What to compare | Trello | Asana | What it means for your team |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organization | Boards, lists, and cards | List, board, calendar, timeline/Gantt, and custom views | Choose the formats your team will actually use, not the longest feature list. |
| Task detail and routine work | Cards with due dates, checklists, files, automation, and integrations | Tasks, sections, templates, rules, custom fields, and forms | Map your existing process first: identify how you assign work, track deadlines, and handle repeatable steps. |
| Visibility across projects | Markets project and roadmap use cases; detailed portfolio behavior is not established by the cited Trello material | Describes portfolios, goals, reporting dashboards, and tasks that can appear in multiple projects | If you coordinate many projects, confirm the exact reporting and cross-project features you need are included in the relevant plan. |
| Integrations | Highlights Power-Ups and integrations | Describes hundreds of integrations and lists a Trello synchronization option through Unito | Check that the specific integration supports your workflow and that using a third-party service is acceptable. |
What do the plans cost?

Trello also lists an Enterprise plan; the cited page material does not establish its price here. See Trello’s pricing page for current terms. Asana’s reviewed feature materials identify Personal, Starter, Advanced, and Enterprise plans but do not provide current price amounts. Check Asana’s pricing page for the current price and billing options. Because a current Asana amount is not established here, a numeric price comparison between the two apps would be misleading.
Compare the same team size, billing cycle, and required features. A free or lower-priced tier is only comparable if it includes the functions your team needs; Asana says feature access varies by plan.

How do integrations and switching between them work?
Asana’s integration listing describes Unito as a Premier Partner integration that can synchronize Trello cards and Asana tasks in both directions in real time. It presents centralized reporting, work with external organizations, and parallel migration as possible use cases. This is a third-party service, not a built-in guarantee of a cost-free or effortless move. Before relying on it, verify its current functionality, plan requirements, privacy and security implications, and price with the Asana Unito listing and the provider.

How to make the decision
- Write down your current workflow. List how work is captured, assigned, moved through stages, scheduled, and reported.
- Pick the views that matter. If a shared board is enough, Trello’s board-list-card model may suit you. If people need calendar, timeline/Gantt, or other project views, evaluate those in Asana.
- Check cross-project needs. Decide whether your team needs only project-level tracking or also portfolio, goals, dashboards, or tasks shared across projects. Verify access on the plan you would buy.
- Compare the actual plan cost. Use the same number of users and billing cadence, then include any required integrations or higher-tier features. Check both official pricing pages for current regional terms.
- Test a representative project. Use a real recurring workflow and confirm that assignments, deadlines, updates, and reporting work for everyone involved before moving all projects.
