U.S. Treasury yields edged lower on October 2, 2026, after reaching multiyear highs a day earlier. The decline was real but partial: the 10-year constant-maturity yield fell to 5.24% from 5.29%, and the 30-year fell to 5.61% from 5.64%. Both remained above their September 25 levels.
What changed in Treasury yields?
The Federal Reserve’s October 2, 2026, H.15 release reports daily nominal Treasury constant-maturity yields. The 10- and 30-year rates moved down from October 1, but the longer-term rise over the preceding week was not erased.

Why did Treasury yields fall from multiyear highs?
The Associated Press reported that the latest jobs report showed cooler hiring, easing concern that a hot economy would add to inflation pressure. Traders pared bets on a Federal Reserve interest-rate hike later in October, and yields initially tumbled. AP also reported that yields gave back some of that decline as oil prices recovered much of an early drop. This is a reported market interpretation of the day’s moves, not proof that one report or factor alone determined yields.

Market yields reflect changing expectations and trading in bonds; they can move as investors reassess the outlook for inflation, economic growth, and Federal Reserve policy. The October 2 account describes a shift in rate-hike expectations following the jobs report, alongside an intraday reversal as oil recovered.
How high were yields at the multiyear peak?
The widely cited highs were intraday levels on October 1, not the October 2 daily readings. Kiplinger reported that the 30-year yield reached 5.693% intraday, its highest since 2002, and that the 10-year moved above 5.3% intraday for the first time since 2002. Those intraday figures are a different observation from the Federal Reserve’s daily constant-maturity figures in the table above; they should not be treated as matching closing values.

What does a falling 10-year Treasury yield mean?
A lower 10-year yield means the market’s benchmark rate for that maturity has eased from its earlier level; it does not mean every borrowing rate falls immediately or by the same amount. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions: when a bond’s market price rises, its yield falls, all else equal.
Market-rate changes can influence mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, savings accounts, CDs, and money market accounts, but each product’s rate depends on other factors and may adjust at a different time. A one-day Treasury move is not a promise of an immediate, one-for-one change in a household rate.

Are Treasury yields still near their highs?
Relative to the October 1 intraday peak, the October 2 readings had retreated. Relative to September 25, however, the 10-year and 30-year constant-maturity yields were still higher. Whether a yield is “near” a high also depends on the maturity, the date range, and whether the comparison uses intraday trading or a daily series; the figures here establish only that the pullback did not undo the prior week’s rise.

A 10-year or 30-year constant-maturity yield is an interpolated point on a Treasury yield curve, not necessarily the yield of one specific outstanding note or bond with exactly that much time remaining. The U.S. Treasury says the par yield curve uses closing market bid prices for the most recently auctioned securities. The underlying indicative bid quotations are collected by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York at or near 3:30 p.m. on business days; Treasury interpolates constant-maturity yields from the curve. The Federal Reserve H.15 release is published on business days and sources its constant-maturity Treasury figures from Treasury. When comparing rates, match the maturity and observation type, and distinguish nominal yields from inflation-indexed yields; a daily constant-maturity reading, an intraday high, and an inflation-indexed rate answer different questions.
