Travel chatbots can help you explore flights, retrieve trip information, and complete selected service tasks—but the capabilities depend on the airline or travel provider. Some can check a booking or flight status, help with check-in, or create a support case. Others focus on suggesting trips and send you to a website or app to buy the ticket. Before relying on a bot during a disruption, check whether it can make changes and how to reach a person.
What a travel chatbot can—and cannot—do
A travel chatbot is a conversational interface for travel information or services. It may appear on an airline website, in a messaging app, or within another platform. The term does not guarantee a particular feature set: one bot may answer general questions, while another can access booking details or perform specific actions.

It helps to distinguish three levels of capability:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Information: answers general questions, such as baggage rules, or returns a flight-status result.
- Personalized lookup: uses a booking reference or account context to retrieve details such as a reservation’s status or a waitlist update.
- Action: completes a task such as selecting a seat, checking in, issuing a boarding pass, or creating a support case. Some actions may require authentication or finish on the provider’s website or app.
These levels are not interchangeable. A bot that can find a flight or display a fare has not necessarily booked a ticket; a bot that can answer a baggage question may not be able to manage a delayed-bag claim. Confirm what the interface actually does before treating its response as a completed transaction.

Common travel chatbot use cases
Explore destinations and flights
Conversational search lets travelers describe a trip in ordinary language, then explore flight options or destination suggestions. The interface may support constraints such as budget, flexible dates, or multiple destinations. This is useful when you are still deciding where or when to go, but discovery is not the same as purchase: some experiences pass the selected option to a conventional booking flow.
Check bookings and travel updates
Airline bots may retrieve booking status, waitlist information, flight status, or baggage details. General flight information may be available without identifying yourself; details tied to your own reservation may require a booking reference or signed-in account. Check that the answer concerns your specific flight and current booking rather than a general policy or schedule.
Complete routine trip tasks
Depending on the provider, a bot may help with check-in, seat selection, boarding-pass access, or a copy of an e-ticket. These are provider-specific functions, not standard chatbot features. Look for an explicit confirmation or the resulting document before assuming the task is complete.

Get help or follow a support case
A bot can guide you through common questions, create a support case, or return a case-status update. Some airline bots also offer an agent connection when they cannot resolve an issue, subject to availability. For a complex exception or disruption, identify the provider’s human-support route rather than assuming the bot can rebook you or connect you immediately.

Examples from airlines and travel providers
The following examples show how different the word “chatbot” can be in practice. Capabilities below are those the named providers describe; they are not evidence of independent performance or a guarantee that every request will succeed.
Air India AI.g
Air India’s AI.g capability page lists itinerary and flight questions, flight-status checks, boarding-pass downloads, and support-case creation and status among its functions. Its example prompts include “Can you help me book a flight from Delhi to Mumbai for tomorrow?” and “Create a case for my lost baggage.” The examples indicate possible ways to ask; they do not establish that every booking or baggage issue can be resolved entirely in chat. Air India AI.g capabilities.
In a January 8, 2024 announcement about AI.g on WhatsApp, Air India said the bot supported more than 1,300 travel-related topics and four languages: Hindi, English, French, and German. Those counts describe Air India’s own announcement about its service at that time, not an industry-wide measure or a current guarantee. The announcement also listed flight status, baggage information, boarding-pass and e-ticket access, seat selection, and support-request status. Air India’s 2024 WhatsApp announcement.

Singapore Airlines describes Kris as handling booking status, including waitlists; flight status; lowest-fare and next-flight lookups; baggage topics; check-in; and seat-related queries. The airline says Kris may offer a connection to a customer-service agent if it cannot resolve an issue, if an agent is available. That qualification matters: an escalation option is not a promise of immediate human assistance. Singapore Airlines Kris FAQ.
Iberia GPT
Iberia’s June 4, 2025 announcement describes an exploratory flight-search experience with flexible dates extending up to five days around selected dates, destination suggestions tailored to preferences, budget-based recommendations, and multi-destination plans. Iberia framed it as an exploratory channel outside traditional customer service. Treat it as a trip-discovery tool, not a replacement for the airline’s service desk. Virgin Atlantic conversational experiences
Virgin Atlantic’s April 20, 2026 announcement describes conversational flight search and comparison inside ChatGPT. The traveler passes the selected option to Virgin Atlantic’s website or app to complete the booking, so the chat experience supports discovery rather than completing the purchase itself. Virgin Atlantic’s ChatGPT flight-search announcement.
Virgin Atlantic has also described Concierge, a conversational experience for planning flights and holidays using tap, text, or voice interaction. Planning help should not be confused with a promise that the entire booking or subsequent customer-service process takes place in that interface. Virgin Atlantic Concierge announcement.
Business-side travel support platforms
Travel providers also use virtual-agent software behind the scenes. Talkdesk describes travel customer-experience tools in which virtual agents can present rebooking options, handle confirmation, and escalate to support. Hopper Technology Solutions’ October 1, 2025 product announcement describes support for reservations, changes, cancellations, refunds, and disruption management. These are vendor-described capabilities; they do not establish that a particular airline or travel company has deployed them or that outcomes are independently verified. How to use a travel chatbot without losing track of the booking
- Choose the provider’s official channel. Start from the airline or travel provider’s own website, app, or announced messaging channel. This helps you distinguish an official service from a third-party result.
- State the task clearly. Say whether you want general information, a lookup for an existing reservation, or an action such as check-in or seat selection. Include relevant details such as route and travel date, but do not share payment or identity information unless the official flow requests it securely.
- Supply booking context only when needed. If a personalized answer requires a booking reference or account sign-in, use the provider’s official authentication flow. Avoid posting sensitive reservation details into an unfamiliar chat.
- Check the result against the task. A search result is not a ticket, and a displayed flight status is not proof that your reservation changed. For an action, look for a confirmation, updated itinerary, boarding pass, or case number as appropriate.
- Follow any handoff to completion. If the bot redirects you to a website or app, complete the purchase or change there and confirm the final details. Virgin Atlantic’s described ChatGPT search, for example, hands the selected option to its website or app for booking completion.
- Escalate exceptions through the provider’s stated route. If the bot cannot handle a disruption, refund, or unusual booking issue, use the listed agent or support channel. Agent availability and the range of issues a bot can escalate vary by provider.
How to judge whether a chatbot is useful for your trip
Evaluate the exact journey you need, not just a broad claim that a service uses AI. The examples above suggest several practical questions:
- Discovery or transaction? Does it only suggest flights, or can it book, check in, select a seat, or change a reservation? Where does the final step occur?
- General or personalized information? Can it answer a policy question, or retrieve details tied to your booking? What account context is required?
- Which trip details are covered? Look for the specific needs relevant to you: flight status, waitlists, baggage, boarding passes, cancellations, refunds, or disruption support.
- Which channel and languages? Availability can differ between a website, app, messaging service, or embedded assistant. Language counts should be tied to the named provider and date; Air India’s four-language figure, for example, came from its 2024 announcement.
- What is the escalation path? Determine whether a human connection is offered, under what conditions, and what to do if agents are unavailable.
- How is completion confirmed? For anything consequential, identify the confirmation that proves the requested booking or service action actually occurred.
These criteria are a practical way to compare provider descriptions, not a published industry standard. No independent cross-provider study establishes which travel chatbot is most accurate or resolves the most cases.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a travel chatbot book a flight?
Some conversational tools help search or recommend flights, but purchase completion depends on the provider. Virgin Atlantic’s described ChatGPT experience passes the selected option to its website or app to finish booking; Iberia presented Iberia GPT as an exploratory channel rather than traditional customer service.
Can a chatbot check my flight status or booking?
Some airline bots describe flight-status and booking-status lookups. A personalized booking answer may require a booking reference or signed-in account, and you should confirm that the result matches your own reservation.
Can a travel chatbot change a ticket or get me rebooked during a disruption?
That depends on the provider and the specific interface. Talkdesk describes virtual agents presenting rebooking options and handling confirmation, while Hopper Technology Solutions describes broader servicing capabilities. Those vendor descriptions do not establish that every airline chatbot can change a ticket or rebook a particular traveler.
Will a chatbot connect me to a human?
Not always. Singapore Airlines says Kris may offer a customer-service agent if it cannot resolve an issue and an agent is available. Check the provider’s stated escalation route, especially for urgent or exceptional problems.
Are travel chatbots’ answers independently verified for accuracy?
The provider descriptions cited here do not establish a cross-provider accuracy benchmark. For consequential information or actions, confirm details through the airline’s official booking or support channel.
