A transparent lithium-ion battery prototype reported by Stanford researchers in 2011 showed one way to make energy storage less obstructive: pattern its electrodes as fine grids inside clear plastic. The work suggested a possible future pairing with transparent solar cells in smart windows, but it did not demonstrate a finished solar-window system or a product for sale.
How does a transparent lithium-ion battery work?
Most battery electrodes are opaque. The Stanford team’s approach was to arrange the active materials in narrow grids so that much of the device remained visually clear. Chemistry World’s 2011 account describes the grids as being formed in trenches in transparent polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a clear polymer.

The reported cathode used lithium manganese oxide (LiMn₂O₄) nanorods, while the anode used lithium titanate (Li₄Ti₅O₁₂) nanopowder. A 100-nanometre gold layer collected current. Water-based electrode slurries filled the patterned trenches by capillary action; the electrode layers were then stacked and aligned. A clear electrolyte separated them, and a clear polymer bag enclosed the device, with aluminium strips serving as terminals. These construction details are reported by Chemistry World.
The principle is not that the battery materials themselves become transparent. Instead, the patterned electrodes occupy only part of the viewing area, leaving open spaces through which light can pass. That design trades some electrode coverage—and therefore energy storage per unit volume—for visibility.

This 200W solar panel is ideal for Class B vans, RVs, marine applications, rooftops and other space-conscious off-grid solar systems. Pre-drilled mounting holes make installation with compatible mounting hardware straightforward.
How transparent were the reported batteries?
Chemistry World reported three prototype configurations. The figures below are the transparency and volumetric energy-density results attributed to the Stanford device in that 2011 account:
| Reported transparency | Reported energy density |
|---|---|
| 78% | 5 Wh/L |
| 60% | 10 Wh/L |
| 30% | 20 Wh/L |
Across these configurations, greater transparency corresponded to lower energy density. The 60%-transparent version’s 10 Wh/L was described in the article as about one tenth the energy density of an average smartphone battery, which Yi Cui put at around 100 Wh/L in that same 2011 report. That is a historical comparison, not a current benchmark or a matched test of competing products.

Can solar windows store electricity?
The proposed idea was to combine a transparent battery with transparent solar cells. A window could then capture some incoming sunlight and store energy for later use, such as low-power lighting. Chemistry World presented this as a potential smart-window application; it did not report an installed system, a commercial launch, or current efficiency and availability for such a product.

A window that does both would need those functions integrated or paired. The 2011 report described the possibility of that combination, not a demonstrated solar window that charges and powers a building.

What did the researchers estimate could improve?
Yi Cui said in 2011 that “By simple optimisation and utilisation of industrial approaches, 50 Wh/L is achievable at current stages.” He also associated advanced electrode materials with a potential energy density of up to 150 Wh/L. Both figures were forward-looking estimates in that report, not measured results from the three prototype configurations. They should not be read as present-day battery benchmarks.
The Chemistry World article also quoted nanoelectronics expert Jongseung Yoon describing the design as “is particularly attractive as it is scalable to large areas as well as to multiple device stacks”. That is an attributed assessment of the approach, not evidence that large-area commercial windows were produced.

Is a transparent battery window available to buy?
The cited account describes laboratory research, not a retail-ready window, named supplier, or consumer product. It does not establish that a transparent lithium-ion battery has been commercialized for building windows. The underlying paper is Y. Yang et al., published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2011 (DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1102873108); the construction and performance details above are attributed to Kate McAlpine’s 26 July 2011 Chemistry World report.
