You can use your existing PlayStation account on a new PS5 without the old console. Sign in with that account instead of creating a new one. Signing in, however, brings over your account identity and library access only. It does not copy local saved data, screenshots, console settings, or installed game files. Those need a separate route, and which route works depends on whether the old console still works and whether the data was ever uploaded or copied somewhere else.
What the account carries and what it does not
Sony’s PS5 quick-start guide for PS4 users says the existing account keeps your game history, trophies, profile, and friends. Those items follow the account, so they appear once you sign in on any compatible console.

- Carried by the account: PlayStation identity, game history, trophies, profile, friends, and access to eligible purchased titles in your library.
- Not carried by signing in: local saved data, screenshots and video clips stored on the console, console settings, and installed game files.
Keep this distinction in mind throughout. A successful sign-in confirms the account is working; it does not prove your saves are on the new machine.

Choose a route based on what still exists
| Situation | Route | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Old console is on and reachable | Sony’s direct console-to-console transfer | Requires the source console to be powered on and on the same network |
| Save was uploaded to PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Download from cloud storage on the new PS5 | Only saves that were actually uploaded are available |
| PS4 save was copied to USB earlier | Copy from USB to the PS5 | Only works if the copy was made before the old console became unavailable |
| PS4 extended-storage drive still available | Connect the drive to the PS5 to reach game data stored on it | Gives access to data already on the drive, not a backup of every save or setting |
| None of the above | No Sony-documented retrieval method | Saves that existed only on the unavailable console cannot be recovered through the documented routes |
Step 1: Sign in to your existing account on the new PS5
- Start the new PS5 and follow the setup screens described in Sony’s PS5 getting-started guide.
- When prompted for an account, choose the option to sign in and enter the existing PlayStation account’s sign-in ID and password.
- If a PlayStation App is already configured on your phone, Sony’s setup guidance notes it can also be used to sign in.
Do not create a replacement account to make the console transfer easier. A second account starts with an empty game history, trophy list, and friends list, and it cannot see the library you bought on the original account.

Step 2: Recover the account if sign-in fails
If you still control the email address tied to the account, use Sony’s recovery flow:
- Confirm the sign-in ID is the email address you think it is, and check that the new console has its latest system software.
- Open Account Management on the Account & Security support page and choose Trouble Signing in? > Recover Your Account.
- Enter the sign-in ID (email address).
- Open the secure verification link Sony sends to that email and set a new password.
Sony’s sign-in troubleshooting page covers the same checks. If the account stays inaccessible, contact PlayStation Support. Avoid unofficial account-recovery services, and never share a password or verification code with anyone.
Step 3: Check whether a copy of the save already exists
Before deciding that a save is lost, check each place a copy could already be. Each route below depends on a copy that existed before the old console went away.

PlayStation Plus cloud storage
If the save was uploaded to cloud storage, download it on the new console using the cloud-storage instructions in Sony’s transfer guide. Cloud storage is an alternative access route for PlayStation Plus members. Confirm the save was uploaded and that the relevant account can see it before counting on it.
PS4 USB save copy
Sony says PS4 game saves can be copied from the PS4 to a USB drive and then copied to the destination PS5. This works only if you made that copy earlier. A USB copy you did not make cannot be created retroactively from an unavailable console.
PS4 extended storage
If the drive you used as PS4 extended storage still exists, connect it to the PS5 to access game data already stored on it. Treat this as access to data on that drive, not as a backup of every save or account setting.

PS5 local saves
Sony’s guidance states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied from a PS5 to a USB drive. Saves that existed only on an unavailable PS5 and were never uploaded have no route described in Sony’s official instructions. A PS5 save you did not upload or otherwise copy is therefore the hardest case to recover.

Sony’s transfer procedure can move user and account information, saved data, screenshots and video clips, games, and console settings. What moves depends on the source console (PS4 or PS5) and on whether you are doing the transfer during initial setup or later. Before you start, confirm all of the following:
- The source console is powered on and available.
- The same account is signed in on both systems.
- Both consoles run current system software.
- Trophies are synchronized.
- Both consoles are on a shared network.
Sony recommends the same network and notes that a commercially available LAN cable is a faster, more stable wired option than wireless. Do not power off either console, and do not change network settings, while the transfer is running. Sony warns that data may be damaged or lost if you do.
When the save existed only on the old console
If the save was never uploaded to cloud storage, never copied to USB, and sits only on a console you can no longer reach, Sony’s published guidance describes no method for retrieving it. PlayStation Support can help with account access, but the documented routes above do not include recovering that save. Going forward, check the cloud-storage and transfer settings on each console you use, so the next replacement does not start from the same gap.
