To move photos from a Samsung phone to a new iPhone, use Apple’s Move to iOS during iPhone setup. If the iPhone is already set up, copy the files to a computer and sync them to the iPhone, or transfer them from Google Photos to iCloud Photos. No method guarantees every original file, format, album, and metadata field will carry over unchanged: in particular, Apple says the Google Photos route transfers the resolution Google makes available for export.
What “without losing quality” means
Photo quality depends on the file that reaches the iPhone, not simply on which transfer method you choose. The Google Photos-to-iCloud Photos process uses the resolution Google supplies for export, so the result may not match a higher-resolution original stored elsewhere. For a local transfer, copy the files you want directly from the Samsung phone rather than assuming a cloud service holds the original.

Resolution is only one part of a complete transfer. File format, metadata, albums, and whether every selected item arrived also matter. Apple says its Google Photos transfer carries associated metadata such as filename, description, file type, and location with supported files; that is not a guarantee that every method preserves every metadata field or album.

Choose a method based on your iPhone setup
| Method | Best when | Check before starting |
|---|---|---|
| Move to iOS | You are setting up a new or erased iPhone and want a direct Android migration. | Select photos and videos, check iPhone capacity, and keep both phones powered and near each other until the transfer finishes. |
| Computer intermediary | The iPhone is already set up, or you want to choose files manually. | Copy the files from Samsung to a computer first, then sync them to the iPhone. A data-capable cable may be needed; connectors depend on your devices and computer. |
| Google Photos to iCloud Photos | Your library is in Google Photos and you want to make a cloud-to-cloud copy. | Allow enough iCloud storage and account for Google’s export resolution and Apple’s format support. |
Move photos with Move to iOS during iPhone setup
Apple’s Move to iOS workflow is available as part of setting up an iPhone. Apple lists camera photos and videos among the content that can move from Android. If the iPhone is already configured, this setup workflow may not suit your situation; use the computer or cloud method below instead. See Apple’s Move from Android to iPhone or iPad guidance.

Use a computer if the iPhone is already set up
Apple documents a manual route that uses a computer between the Android phone and iPhone. Photo and video files are commonly stored in the Samsung phone’s DCIM folder, though you should check for other folders if you saved media elsewhere. Apple’s instructions are in Move content from Android to iOS.
- Connect the Samsung phone to a computer with a data-capable cable. Unlock the phone and allow file access if prompted.
- Open the phone’s storage on the computer and locate the photos and videos you want to transfer, commonly in DCIM.
- Copy the selected files into a clearly named folder on the computer. Wait for the copy to finish before disconnecting the Samsung phone.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer and sync the folder using Finder on newer Macs, iTunes on older Macs, or Apple Devices on Windows, as applicable.
- Open Photos on the iPhone and verify the synced items. Apple says synced items appear in Photos; confirm the files you need are there and open as expected.
Apple’s Android-to-iOS transfer instructions describe the computer-based method. Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance is for transfers to Galaxy devices, so Smart Switch is not the destination tool for moving a Samsung library to an iPhone.

Copy Google Photos to iCloud Photos
If your photos are already in Google Photos, Apple provides a way to transfer a copy to iCloud Photos. This does not move files directly from the Samsung phone; it copies what Google makes available for export. Apple states that the transferred resolution is the resolution Google supplies, so do not assume the export is always the full-resolution original. Follow Apple’s instructions for transferring photos and videos to iCloud Photos.
- Check iCloud capacity. The transfer needs enough available iCloud storage for the files.
- Check file formats. Apple supports certain photo and video formats for iCloud Photos. Unsupported items, including RAW files, may be transferred to iCloud Drive instead of appearing in iCloud Photos.
- Verify the result in the right place. Check iCloud Photos for supported files and iCloud Drive for items Apple routes there.
- Review metadata expectations. Apple says associated filename, description, file type, and location metadata transfer with supported files, but does not promise that every album or metadata field is preserved across all workflows.
Verify the copy before deleting Samsung originals
Keep the originals on the Samsung phone until you have checked the destination. Compare the transferred library against the folders or selection you intended to copy, open a sample of photos and videos, and confirm that cloud-transferred files appear in the expected Apple location. If anything is missing or does not open, keep the Samsung copy and repeat the transfer for the affected items.
