What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Google Photos and Microsoft OneDrive don’t have a one-click native bridge, so the transfer plan matters. The right method depends on how many photos you have, whether you need original quality, and how much you care about album structure.
This guide covers four best ways to transfer Google Photos to Microsoft OneDrive, including the most reliable approach (Google Takeout), a fast sync workflow for large libraries, and practical alternatives when you don’t want to export everything at once.

What You Need Before You Start
Take 5 minutes to set up this checklist; it prevents most transfer issues.
- Microsoft account with access to OneDrive (personal OneDrive or business OneDrive, depending on your plan).
- OneDrive storage space for your entire Google Photos library (photos/videos plus any duplicates from re-exports).
- Enough local disk space for exports from Google Takeout. Plan for compressed archives and extracted files.
- Stable internet. For large libraries, use a wired connection on your computer when possible.
- A folder destination strategy (for example: OneDrive > Pictures > Google Photos 2026-05).
Important: Google Photos includes both photos and videos, and Google Takeout may export them with metadata. Compression quality settings directly affect what you get in OneDrive.
Method 1: Export From Google Photos With Google Takeout, Then Upload to OneDrive (Web)
This method is reliable and simple, but it can be slow if you have thousands of items because it relies on browser uploads.
Method 1: Google Takeout → Download ZIPs → Upload via OneDrive Web
Use this when your library is small-to-medium and you want everything to end up in one place quickly.
- Sign in to Google Takeout at takeout.google.com.
- Click Deselect all.
- Scroll to Google Photos and enable it.
- Click Next step.
- Choose your export delivery method (commonly Download link via email is easiest). Choose archive format and size options that match your disk space (for example, .zip and split archives).
- Click Create export.
- When the export is ready, download each ZIP archive to your computer.
- Extract the archives into a local folder (for example:
Downloads/Google Photos Export/). - Open OneDrive in your browser: https://onedrive.live.com.
- Create a destination folder (for example: Pictures > Google Photos).
- Drag-and-drop extracted photo/video files into that OneDrive folder.
- Wait for uploads to finish, then verify by browsing the OneDrive folder and checking a few sample files.
Method 2: Google Takeout + OneDrive Sync Folder (Fastest for Large Libraries)
If you’re transferring a large Google Photos library, syncing to OneDrive from your computer is usually faster than uploading page-by-page in a browser.
Method 2: Google Takeout → Extract Into OneDrive Sync Folder
Use this when you care about speed and you have a reliable PC with the OneDrive desktop app installed.
- Install or open the OneDrive desktop app on your Windows PC or macOS.
- Sign in and confirm the OneDrive sync folder is working (you should see a local OneDrive folder).
- On Google Takeout (takeout.google.com), repeat the Google Photos export steps from Method 1.
- Download the exported ZIP archives to your computer.
- Extract the archives locally.
- Copy or move the extracted files into the OneDrive sync folder. For example, on Windows you might use:
OneDrive\Pictures\Google Photos\. - Let OneDrive sync complete. Keep the computer on and avoid turning off sleep mode during the transfer.
- After sync finishes, confirm OneDrive shows the files and that thumbnails load for a handful of items.
Pro tip: If OneDrive starts syncing, but you want a clean hierarchy, create the destination folder before moving files.
Rank #2
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Method 3: Download Photos in Batches From Google Photos (Quick but Manual)
This method can be practical when you only need selected albums or date ranges. It’s not ideal for whole-library moves because it’s easy to miss items.
Method 3: Download From Google Photos Web → Upload to OneDrive
Use this when you want control over which items move first.
- Go to photos.google.com and sign in.
- Open a specific Album or use the search/date filters to find the items you want.
- Select multiple photos and click Download.
- Google will package selections into ZIP files. Download and extract them on your computer.
- Open OneDrive (web) or use the OneDrive sync folder.
- Upload the extracted images/videos into a destination folder (for example: Pictures/Google Photos/Album Name).
- Repeat in batches until you’ve covered everything you want.
Gotcha: Batch downloading can produce multiple ZIPs with overlapping filenames, which may confuse your organization inside OneDrive if you mix batches.
Method 4: Use a Migration Tool to Move Google Photos to OneDrive
Migration tools can speed up transfers by automating the export and upload steps. The tradeoff is cost, account permissions, and varying quality outcomes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Method 4: Migration Service (Automated Export + Upload)
Use this when your library is too large or too time-consuming for manual workflows.
- Choose a migration service that supports Google Photos to OneDrive. Examples often used include tools such as MultCloud (capabilities vary by time and region).
- Read the service’s policies on original quality, metadata, and folder/albums handling.
- Connect your Google account and your OneDrive account by following the on-screen OAuth prompts.
- Select the source (Google Photos) and destination (OneDrive folder).
- Choose whether to include Photos and Videos, and set options for quality if offered.
- Start the transfer and monitor progress.
- After completion, verify a sample set in OneDrive and compare counts (for example, number of files exported vs. number uploaded).
Security note: Only use services with clear permission scopes, published privacy policies, and a proven track record. Disconnect the tool from your accounts after migration if the platform allows it.
Quality, Naming, Albums, and Dates: What Will (and Won’t) Transfer
The biggest surprises usually come from how Google Photos structures its library and how exports package media.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Quality: Original vs High quality
Google Photos historically offered different storage qualities (Original quality and Storage saver/High quality). When you export, Takeout can include metadata and the stored versions—so confirm what version you actually have.
- If your Google Photos library stored originals, exports typically keep the original files.
- If your library used compressed versions, the export will reflect that.
Albums and library structure
Albums in Google Photos are organizational views. In exports, the files usually come as regular media files with folder paths that don’t always map 1:1 to Google album names.
Expect to re-create organization in OneDrive (folders by year, event, or album) after the transfer if you care about browsing structure.
Filenames, EXIF data, and timestamps
Most exports preserve file metadata like capture dates (EXIF) when available. OneDrive may not display the same “Google Photos” style timeline, but the underlying timestamps generally remain.
Tip: If you want a clean timeline, consider organizing in OneDrive by year once files are uploaded.

Troubleshooting and Common Failure Points
Even good workflows fail. Here’s what to check when something goes wrong.
Takeout export is taking too long
If your export takes multiple attempts or hours, keep your browser session active and don’t start another export at the same time. For very large libraries, plan for several archive parts.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Use split archive sizes so you can extract progressively.
- Store downloads on an SSD if possible.
- Pause other heavy downloads that saturate bandwidth.
OneDrive upload fails or gets stuck
Browser uploads can time out. If an upload stalls mid-way, stop the browser upload and switch to the OneDrive sync folder workflow.
- Refresh your OneDrive page only after the upload attempt stops.
- Try a different browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox) if you see repeated “network error” prompts.
- For sync: ensure you’re signed in and that the OneDrive client isn’t paused.
Duplicate files appear in OneDrive
Duplicates happen when you upload overlapping archives or rerun exports. OneDrive treats each upload as a new file unless names match and the service overwrites (which it usually won’t by default).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix approach:
- Before re-uploading, check OneDrive for existing folders/files.
- Use a consistent naming or folder scheme per export run.
- If you must re-upload, delete the target folder created by the failed run and retry into a fresh folder.
Files don’t show thumbnails or appear “missing”
If thumbnails don’t load, confirm the files finished uploading (or syncing) fully. For sync workflows, check the OneDrive icon status (paused, syncing, or up to date).
- Wait for indexing to complete in OneDrive.
- Verify file sizes match the local copies.
- Open one file directly from OneDrive to confirm it’s intact.
Quality isn’t what you expected
If you expected original quality but the export looks compressed, the library likely stored compressed versions in Google Photos.
- Check whether your Google Photos storage was set to “Original quality” at the time of upload.
- Re-check what was actually stored (not what the UI used to promise).
- Re-export only if you can restore originals from another source (for example, your original device backups).
FAQs
Can I transfer Google Photos directly into OneDrive without exporting?
Not reliably. OneDrive doesn’t provide a standard “import from Google Photos” button that matches the completeness of a Google Takeout export.
If you only need a small set of items, batch downloads from Google Photos can work, but for a full library, Takeout is the dependable route.
Will Google Photos albums carry over to OneDrive?
Usually not as album objects. Exports produce folders/files that may not map perfectly to album names. You’ll typically recreate album structure in OneDrive using your own folder scheme (for example, by year and event).

Does OneDrive keep original photo/video metadata like date taken?
Most exports include metadata, and media files generally retain capture timestamps (EXIF) even if OneDrive’s browsing experience differs from Google Photos.
To be safe, validate a sample set by checking a few file details locally after export.
How long does the transfer take?
Time depends on your upload bandwidth, file count, and OneDrive processing. Expect longer durations for tens of thousands of items, especially with mixed video sizes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If time matters, prioritize Method 2 (Takeout + OneDrive sync folder).
Is it safe to use a third-party migration tool?
It can be, but it depends on the tool. Only use services with transparent permission scopes, clear privacy policies, and the ability to disconnect access after migration.
Bottom Line
If you want a dependable, complete transfer, use Google Takeout and then place the exported files into OneDrive. For large libraries, pairing Takeout with the OneDrive sync folder (Method 2) is usually the fastest and least frustrating.
Choose batch downloads (Method 3) for specific albums and pick a migration tool (Method 4) only when automation is worth the permission tradeoffs.
