This reversal is defined at the level of the input–output pairs. It does not guarantee that the inverse is a single-valued function or that it retains stronger properties such as sequentiality.
This article uses “inverse transducer” in the general relation-reversal sense. Some specialized automata literature uses the term for a machine with additional structural properties, noted below.

What is a transducer?
An ordinary finite automaton accepts or rejects strings. A finite-state transducer instead has input and output behavior: it can be understood as recognizing pairs of strings, with one string serving as input and the other as output. MIT Press describes finite-state transducers in these terms, while University of Pennsylvania course notes describe the behavior as mapping an input string to a set of possible output strings. A run through the machine therefore establishes a correspondence between an input and an output. Depending on the machine and the relation it defines, one input may correspond to one output or to several possible outputs.

What does it mean to invert a transducer?
Represent a transducer’s behavior as a relation T, a set of input–output pairs. Its inverse relation is T−1 = {(y, x) : (x, y) ∈ T}. In plain terms, every pair is reversed: what was input becomes output, and what was output becomes input. At the transition level, this is commonly described as swapping the input and output labels. *Speech and Language Processing*, finite-state transducer chapter.
For example, take the illustrative relation T = {(a, 1), (b, 1)}. Both a and b are related to 1. Reversing the pairs gives T−1 = {(1, a), (1, b)}. This example is a teaching illustration, not a claim about a particular machine.

How the original and inverse differ

The key change is direction, not necessarily machine behavior in a stronger sense. If multiple original inputs share one output, the inverse relation gives that output multiple possible outputs. In the example, input 1 in T−1 is related to both a and b, so the inverse is not single-valued as an ordinary function.

Does every transducer have an inverse?
Every relation can be reversed by swapping the elements of each pair, so the inverse relation exists. But “has an inverse” can imply more than that in everyday mathematical usage. Relation reversal does not guarantee a two-sided inverse function, nor does it guarantee that the reversed behavior is single-valued. A relation may be inverted even when its inverse maps one input to several outputs.

This distinction matters when a source calls the original machine a function or imposes other constraints. A function can have several different inputs with the same output; reversing its pairs then produces a relation that is not a function. Inversion reverses the correspondence, but it does not erase ambiguity that was present in the opposite direction.
Does inversion preserve determinism or sequentiality?
Not necessarily. Determinism, functionality, and sequentiality are properties of a machine or the relation it realizes; they are not automatic consequences of swapping labels. In particular, *Speech and Language Processing* notes that the inverse of a sequential transducer may not itself be sequential. - Functionality: asks whether an input has at most one output.
- Determinism: concerns how the machine’s transitions are selected; it is a machine-level property, not just a statement about reversing pairs.
- Sequentiality: is a stronger restriction on how inputs are mapped to outputs. The inverse relation may fail to meet it even if the original transducer does.
Why “inverse transducer” can mean something different
The term is not uniform across every subfield. In the general sense used here, it means a transducer representing the relation obtained by swapping input and output. A research paper in a specialized automata setting uses “inverse transducer” for a machine that is deterministic, complete, and involutive. That is a different, stronger convention—not a reason to assume those properties whenever a text says “inverse transducer.” Research paper on automata-theoretic methods.

When reading or writing about an inverse transducer, check the definition in context: does “inverse” mean only that input and output are exchanged, or does the author require additional properties? Stating the convention prevents a relation-level reversal from being confused with a specialized machine class.
