The terms can overlap because both involve automation, but a bot is a broad description of activity, while a generator is used in performance testing. Neither term alone tells you whether the activity is harmful.
What is a traffic bot?
A traffic bot is software that automatically sends requests to a website or performs actions online. The label describes automation, not intent: automated activity can include useful crawling and monitoring as well as attempts to manipulate metrics, abuse an endpoint, or disrupt a service. Cloudflare explains the range of bot traffic and approaches to managing it in its bot traffic overview.

Automated visits do not necessarily appear in every analytics report. Google Analytics properties automatically exclude recognized bots and spiders, using a combination of Google research and the IAB-maintained International Spiders and Bots List. A report in an analytics tool therefore is not a census of every request reaching a server, and its count may differ from server logs. See Google’s explanation of known bot and spider traffic.
What is a traffic generator for?
In performance engineering, a traffic generator is a test harness or tool that sends a defined workload to a system. Teams use it to see how the service behaves as demand changes, identify bottlenecks, and assess readiness for expected usage. A high request count by itself is not a passing result: define acceptable response times, error rates, and service-level thresholds before running the test.

Locust is one example of an open-source performance and load-testing tool for HTTP and other protocols. Test authors write scenarios in Python, and Locust reports throughput, response times, and errors; it also supports distributed execution. See the Locust documentation.
How are bots and traffic generators different?
| Question | Traffic bot | Traffic generator |
|---|---|---|
| What does the term describe? | Software that automatically sends requests or performs online actions. | A test tool or harness that produces a defined workload. |
| Typical purpose | Varies: for example, crawling, monitoring, metric manipulation, endpoint abuse, or disruption. | Evaluate service behavior under planned demand and help locate bottlenecks. |
| Does the label establish intent? | No. Automated activity can be useful or unwanted. | It indicates a testing role, but a test still needs an appropriate workload and target. |
So, a traffic generator may produce automated requests, but “bot” and “traffic generator” are not interchangeable labels. One describes automated activity broadly; the other describes a performance-testing use.

How to choose a load-testing approach
There is no universally best approach. Choose based on what you need to exercise and what the results should represent.
Protocol-level tests
These focus on backend requests and are useful when the question is how services and APIs respond under load. They do not reproduce all browser behavior.
Browser-based tests
These include browser behavior and can represent more of the frontend experience, but the workload and infrastructure differ from protocol-level testing.
Hybrid tests
A hybrid approach combines protocol and browser testing when a team needs to examine both backend capacity and user-facing behavior.
Make the workload representative
Model real user paths, data variation, pauses, and dynamic responses where they matter. The generator’s location also affects what the test represents; if users are concentrated in particular regions, consider load generators in those zones. Google Cloud cautions that a test should use a representative version of the service: a simplistic substitute can produce misleading results. Its Cloud Run load-testing guidance explains this concern.

A local test and a distributed test have different infrastructure and workflow needs. Locust supports distributed execution. Hosted or AWS-integrated options are also listed in the AWS Marketplace; service descriptions and availability can change, so check current listings and terms before choosing one.

How to test whether a site can handle a traffic spike
- Get authorization and choose the target. Use a representative test environment where possible, and confirm that the application owner has approved the test. Do not direct load at an unrelated third-party site without authorization.
- Set the workload and success criteria. Define the user journeys, expected load pattern, response-time limits, error-rate limits, and service-level thresholds you will use to judge the result.
- Choose the test method. Use protocol-level testing for backend request behavior, browser-based testing for browser behavior, or a hybrid when both matter. Place generators where they reasonably represent the users you are modeling.
- Run with observability in place. Monitor the service and the generator so that resource limits or failures in the test setup are not mistaken for application behavior.
- Limit production risk if testing live. Follow operational controls and consider lower load, off-peak scheduling, and less risky test types. Grafana k6 discusses these precautions in its website load-testing guidance.
Why analytics and request counts can disagree
Analytics and server logs answer different questions. Analytics may omit recognized bot and spider visits, while logs can record requests that analytics does not report. For that reason, do not interpret an analytics traffic total as the exact number of requests the server received.
