If your laptop trackpad has stopped responding, start with the quick checks that take a minute or two: confirm the trackpad is switched on, look for a touchpad hotkey, and use an external mouse if you need pointer control while you work through the rest. On Windows, the next step is a driver update, then a driver reinstall in Device Manager. On a Mac, try moving the pointer with one finger and check for a low-battery condition. If the trackpad is still absent or unresponsive after the software steps, stop and contact the laptop maker or an authorized service provider rather than buying a replacement part.
Run these checks on any laptop first
- Restart the computer. If the problem began right after a settings change, a system update, a spill, or a drop, note that timing. It helps you narrow the cause, but it does not prove what caused the failure.
- Look for a touchpad key. Many laptops have a key with a touchpad icon that turns the trackpad on or off, sometimes alone and sometimes with the Fn key held down. The key’s position varies by model, so check your manufacturer’s documentation for the exact combination. MSI’s support guidance, for example, tells owners to check the notebook hotkey and notes that its location differs between models.
- Use an external mouse for now. A basic wired USB mouse, or a Bluetooth mouse, gives you temporary control while you follow the steps below. It does not repair the built-in trackpad, so treat it only as a workaround. Microsoft support staff suggest this approach in a Microsoft Learn Q&A answer dated February 15, 2026.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Microsoft’s support article Fix touchpad problems in Windows covers both versions. Menu labels and paths can shift between Windows releases and between laptop models, so if a path below does not match your screen, search Settings for “touchpad.”

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad (Windows 11 path) and confirm that the touchpad is turned on.
- Open Device Manager and expand Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices. Locate the touchpad entry; Microsoft’s troubleshooting page identifies these two locations.
- Update the touchpad driver. Microsoft recommends using Windows Update for this. Updating through Device Manager is an alternative route.
- If the update does not help, uninstall and reinstall the touchpad device through Device Manager. Microsoft says this can prompt Windows to download the latest driver from Windows Update.
- If the touchpad setting or device is missing, or the trackpad still does not respond after the driver steps, contact the laptop manufacturer for device-specific guidance.
Microsoft’s support article states the underlying cause plainly: “If a touchpad isn’t working, it might be a result of a missing or out-of-date driver.” Avoid third-party driver utilities, and do not install a driver built for a different laptop model, because either can leave the device in a worse state.
Mac laptops
Apple’s support article If the pointer doesn’t move when using the trackpad with Mac starts with a simple test: move the pointer with one finger. Apple also notes that the Mac may be displaying a low-battery alert you cannot see, so connect power and check the screen. If the trackpad still does not work after these checks, Apple directs you to service. The Windows driver steps above do not apply to macOS.

Windows on an Intel Mac using Boot Camp
Trackpad behavior under Windows on a Mac depends on two things: whether the Mac supports Microsoft’s Precision Touchpad drivers, and whether current Boot Camp support software is installed. If Windows does not show Precision Touchpad settings, Apple’s guidance is to use the Boot Camp Control Panel for trackpad options. This applies to Windows running on supported Intel-based Macs through Boot Camp. It does not describe macOS troubleshooting or Macs with Apple silicon.
Choose the right next step
| Situation | Where to look first | Next step if it still fails |
|---|---|---|
| Windows laptop, trackpad off or unresponsive | Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad, and the touchpad hotkey | Driver update, then driver reinstall in Device Manager |
| Mac laptop, pointer does not move | One-finger pointer test and low-battery condition | Apple service |
| Windows on an Intel Mac through Boot Camp | Precision Touchpad settings, then Boot Camp Control Panel | Update Boot Camp support software and confirm Mac model support; no separate fix listed in the Apple article |
| Touchpad missing from Settings and Device Manager | Confirm the model and hotkey | Laptop manufacturer |
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Move to manufacturer support or an authorized service provider when the software checks have not restored the trackpad, or when the device does not appear at all. MSI’s support FAQ, last updated July 13, 2026, describes a further sequence for its own notebooks: after a driver reinstall, a reset of the embedded controller (EC), and a check with an external mouse fail to fix the problem, a loose cable or a failed trackpad module may be involved. That sequence is specific to MSI models. Check your manufacturer’s own documentation before applying any reset, and do not treat MSI’s hardware guidance as universal.
