Store carrier identity and tracking number separately. Use number shape to suggest possible matches, then resolve uncertainty with a documented carrier code, country, or user-provided hint.
Why a carrier name is not a reliable key
A tracking number identifies a shipment within a carrier’s tracking system. It is not the carrier’s identity. Shipping APIs reflect that distinction: PayPal’s Orders v2 tracker model has separate required tracking_number and carrier fields, while Amazon Seller Central shipment data distinguishes carrier-code, carrier-name, and tracking-number. Keep those concepts separate in your own data model too.

A display name is useful for people, but it may not be a stable or globally unique machine key. Carrier lists can include global and country-specific entries, and the right entry can depend on the shipment’s geography. PayPal tells API users to select the appropriate global or country-specific carrier for the shipment’s country: PayPal Add Tracking API Carriers.
What number shape can—and cannot—tell you
Length, character set, prefixes, and other format clues can help narrow down which carrier might handle a shipment. They should be treated as candidate-generation signals, not as a universal carrier lookup key. Plain-numeric formats can overlap: ShipShim’s API reference documents ambiguous matches and supports using a carrier or country hint to narrow candidates: ShipShim API Reference.

That example shows why a format match is not proof. The available documentation does not establish an exhaustive, authoritative global catalog of carrier formats or a rule that can identify every carrier from a tracking number alone. Avoid presenting a single regex list as definitive.
Model carrier and tracking number as separate fields
Use the carrier’s documented code or enum as the machine-readable identity when the API provides one. Keep a display name separately for user-facing text, and store the tracking number as its own value. If your integration needs country context, represent that explicitly instead of assuming a name or number format identifies the region.

For unsupported carriers, follow the target API’s documented fallback rather than inventing an enum value. PayPal’s tracker fields support OTHER with a separate carrier_name_other field for the carrier’s name; its carrier guidance also says to use the appropriate country-specific or global entry when available. - Use known shipment data first. If checkout, an order record, or an upstream system supplies the carrier, preserve that choice and map it to the API’s documented code where possible.
- Use format matching only when identity is missing. Compare the pasted number against supported patterns to generate possible carriers; do not silently promote a likely match to a certain one.
- Resolve multiple candidates with context. Ask for or use an available carrier hint or shipment country. If more than one candidate remains, return or store that ambiguity for the caller to resolve.
- Keep no-match cases explicit. A number that matches no known pattern may be mistyped, unsupported, or outside your format catalog. Do not fabricate a carrier choice.
- Validate without silently changing identity. If the number’s shape conflicts with the selected carrier, report the mismatch for review. It could indicate a typo, unsupported format, or incorrect carrier selection; the format alone is not grounds to overwrite the caller’s choice.
Choose an integration strategy that preserves uncertainty

This decision model follows the documented separation of carrier and tracking fields and the ambiguity behavior described by ShipShim; it is implementation guidance, not a universal industry standard. If you depend on a third-party aggregator for detection, treat its database as one source of candidates rather than the source of truth for every courier.
