To track investments in Quicken Classic, connect an eligible investment account or enter activity manually, review transactions in the account’s transaction list, and update security quotes separately when needed. The exact menus depend on whether you use Quicken Classic for Windows or Mac; Quicken Simplifi handles investment records differently.
Choose how to maintain your investment accounts
Quicken Classic can collect transactions, balances, and holdings from participating financial institutions, or you can keep records by entering transactions yourself. The connection methods available depend on the institution and account type, so a brokerage account may not support every method. Some Web Connect workflows involve downloading a file from the financial institution and importing it into Quicken.

- Use a connected account if your institution supports the required Quicken connection and you want to download activity and balances.
- Enter activity manually if you prefer to maintain the record yourself or cannot use a suitable connection method.
On Quicken Classic for Mac, investment accounts can include brokerage, IRA, 401(k), and 529 accounts. The Transactions view shows recorded activity; Portfolio provides an overview of holdings.

Connect and update an investment account in Quicken Classic for Windows
- Set up online services for the account. Online updates require the investment account to be enabled for online services. Follow the connection options available for your financial institution and account type.
- Update one account: open the investment account, open Account Actions, and choose Update Now.
- Update multiple accounts: choose Tools > One Step Update. In the update settings, select the accounts and services you want included.
- Check the result: review the One Step Update Summary, then open the investment account’s transaction list and inspect newly downloaded activity.
Quicken Classic for Mac also supports automatic updates from participating institutions, as well as manual transaction entry, but the Windows menu paths above should not be assumed to apply on Mac.

Use the transaction list to track activity
In Quicken Classic, an investment account’s transaction list serves as its register. It records activity such as purchases, sales, dividends, reinvestments, and stock splits. For a connected account, transactions are updated when you run One Step Update.
Think of the transaction list as the activity history and the Portfolio view as the holdings overview. Reviewing both helps you distinguish what was recorded from what the account currently shows you own.

Review downloaded transactions before accepting them
If you already entered transactions manually and your register is accurate, review downloaded items individually rather than accepting everything at once. Accepting all can create duplicate entries. A downloaded sale may also prompt you to specify tax lots. If Quicken’s holdings do not match the brokerage’s, an adjustment may be needed; check the underlying activity before changing the record.
Update security prices separately in Quicken Classic for Windows
Transaction and balance updates are not the same as downloading security quotes. To update prices in Windows, go to Investing > Go to Investing, select the Portfolio tab, and click Update. This Portfolio update requires internet access. Alternatively, include quotes in One Step Update.

Quicken needs the correct ticker symbol to retrieve a security’s price. Its help documentation says it does not update money-market securities or securities whose ticker ends in XX. A missing price may therefore reflect the security type or ticker rather than a failed account transaction download.
Check the investment account value
In the Windows account transaction list, Quicken can show securities value, cash balance, and total market value together. The displayed cash balance is calculated for today; it does not include future-dated transactions. When comparing Quicken with a brokerage statement, account for the statement date and any activity dated in the future in Quicken.

Quicken Simplifi has a different investment-tracking model. Its investment transaction records document activity but do not themselves change holdings, account balance, or portfolio value. Holdings and cash drive those values in Simplifi. For that reason, recording a transaction there is not equivalent to updating holdings in Quicken Classic.
These steps explain how the software records and displays investment information; they are not investment, tax, or brokerage advice.
