Track Express Checkout API Errors and Find Useful Node.js Stack Traces

Track Express checkout API failures by forwarding errors correctly for your Express version, capturing diagnostic context, and keeping stack traces out of public responses.

To track errors in an Express checkout API, make sure exceptions reach your monitoring layer, attach useful request or trace context, and keep the response sent to the client separate from the diagnostic record. The first step is checking your Express major version: Express 5 forwards rejected promises from promise-returning handlers automatically; Express 4 requires asynchronous errors to be passed to next(err).

Check how your Express version forwards errors

Error tracking begins with error propagation. A monitoring SDK cannot reliably capture a failure that never reaches its instrumentation or your error-handling path.

Express 5

Express 5 automatically forwards thrown errors and rejected promises from promise-returning route handlers and middleware to error handling. Register your error middleware in the correct position in the middleware chain, after the routes and middleware whose errors it should handle. Confirm that any custom asynchronous code returns its promise so Express can observe a rejection.

Express 4

Express 4 catches synchronous throws in route handling, but asynchronous errors must be forwarded to next(err). For promise-based route logic, use an explicit rejection handler or a wrapper that reliably passes rejected errors to next. Check the deployed framework version rather than assuming Express 5 behavior.

Separate monitoring from the HTTP error response

Your API has two distinct jobs when a failure occurs: send the client a deliberate, stable response, and send restricted diagnostic information to logs or an error-monitoring system. Avoid returning raw exception messages, stack traces, or internal object details to a public caller. Those details help diagnose a fault but may reveal implementation information that the client does not need.

Express’s default error handler omits stack traces from production responses. It uses err.status or err.statusCode when the value is a valid 4xx or 5xx status, and otherwise falls back to 500. That fallback is not a reason to expose an exception’s text in a custom API response. Define the status and response shape your API intends to return, and capture the underlying error separately.

In development, Express’s errorhandler middleware can return a standard Error’s stack and expose internal details. Express describes it as “Development-only error handler middleware.” Do not use that diagnostic behavior for public production API responses. Express errorhandler documentation

Build error middleware that respects response state

A custom error handler should record or forward the diagnostic error, then send a safe response only when the response is still writable. If an earlier middleware has already started sending headers, a second response can compound the problem.

  1. Handle errors after the relevant routes. Place the error middleware after the routes and middleware it is meant to catch.
  2. Check whether headers were sent. If res.headersSent is true, call next(err) and do not attempt to write another response. Express documents this as the way to delegate to its default handler.
  3. Capture diagnostic context. Send the error and appropriately limited request or trace context to your monitoring or logging destination. Keep sensitive request data out of telemetry unless your data-handling policy permits it.
  4. Return the API’s safe error shape. When headers have not been sent, choose a deliberate status and generic client-facing message rather than returning stack or internal details.

Errors can arrive after response output begins, for example while streaming. In that case, Express’s default handler can close the connection; the handler cannot safely replace a response that is already underway. Also avoid forwarding the same error to next() more than once: the Express 5 guide warns that doing so can trigger the default handler even when custom error middleware is present. Choose a monitoring path for stack traces and event search

Framework error handling determines whether a failure reaches your application’s error path. Instrumentation and a monitoring backend determine how diagnostic events are collected, correlated, grouped, and searched. Two common approaches are a vendor SDK and OpenTelemetry instrumentation.

Vendor SDK instrumentation

Sentry’s Node.js SDK documentation covers Express instrumentation intended to capture application errors and performance data. SDK setup is version-sensitive, so follow the current official instructions for your Node.js and Express versions, and initialize instrumentation early enough to observe application activity. Confirm which errors are captured automatically and which require an explicit capture call; do not assume that installing a package alone records every checkout failure. OpenTelemetry instrumentation

OpenTelemetry JavaScript provides APIs and SDKs for producing and collecting telemetry in Node.js and browser JavaScript. Its documentation currently labels traces and metrics stable and logs in development; status labels can change, so check the current documentation when choosing components. An OpenTelemetry design can keep instrumentation vendor-neutral, but still requires selecting a collector and backend. The documentation does not establish that a particular backend is best for a checkout API or that a given setup automatically captures every error event. OpenTelemetry JavaScript documentation

Evaluate the workflow, not just capture

Capturing an exception is only the beginning of an operational workflow. When assessing a monitoring setup, check:

  • Support for the Node.js runtime and Express version you deploy.
  • Whether errors are captured automatically or need explicit calls, and how stack and source context are preserved.
  • How events are grouped, queried, and filtered, including whether request or trace context is available for correlation.
  • Deployment and data-residency requirements, alert controls, and expected cost at your event volume.

These are evaluation criteria, not a product ranking: available evidence here does not establish a current feature-by-feature comparison of event-search interfaces, pricing, or backends.

Keep request context useful and appropriately limited

Context makes a stack trace easier to investigate, but more context is not always better. Attach the information your team needs to locate a failure—such as a trace identifier or relevant route context—while following your own access and data-retention rules. Avoid treating a full request payload as a default diagnostic field, particularly for checkout traffic that may contain sensitive customer or payment information.

Keep the client response and monitoring event deliberately different: clients need a predictable status and message, while authorized operators need enough diagnostic context to find the failure. The exact response schema and fields to capture depend on your API and data-handling policy.
