The message “This device can’t use a Trusted Platform Module” does not necessarily mean your PC lacks a TPM. It may be present but disabled in UEFI firmware, or the feature you are setting up may need a different configuration. First note whether the message appeared during BitLocker setup, Windows Hello setup, or another task; then check TPM status before changing firmware settings.
Check whether Windows detects a TPM
Use either Windows Security or the TPM Management console to check whether a TPM is present, ready, and running the required specification version.

- Open Windows Security, select Device security, then look for Security processor. Open Security processor details and note the specification version.
- Alternatively, press Windows+R, enter
tpm.msc, and press Enter. Check the TPM status and specification version shown in the console.
Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0. If Windows says “Compatible TPM cannot be found,” or the Security processor section is missing, do not assume the hardware is absent: Microsoft notes that a TPM may be disabled. If a TPM is detected but its specification version is below 2.0, enabling it will not make it meet Windows 11’s TPM 2.0 requirement. Microsoft’s TPM 2.0 enablement guidance explains how to check firmware settings.

If TPM is disabled, enable it in UEFI
TPM settings are controlled by your PC’s UEFI firmware, and the menu names and route into firmware vary by manufacturer and model. On some Windows versions, the route is Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Restart now, followed by Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart. The exact path may differ on your device.

In UEFI, look for a TPM-related option under menus such as Advanced, Security, or Trusted Computing. It may be labeled Security Device, Security Device Support, TPM State, AMD fTPM switch, AMD PSP fTPM, Intel PTT, or Intel Platform Trust Technology. Enable the appropriate setting only when you can identify it confidently. If the name or function is unclear, follow your PC maker’s support instructions rather than guessing; the controls are device-specific. Microsoft recommends checking the manufacturer’s support information when you are unsure how to change TPM settings.
If Windows reports a TPM problem
Windows Security’s security processor troubleshooting page can report issues such as a disabled TPM, a needed firmware update, or firmware incompatibility. For firmware updates or compatibility questions, Microsoft directs users to the device manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid treating Clear TPM as a routine toggle or first-line repair.

Clearing a TPM can affect sign-in and stored credentials. Back up important data first, and if the PC belongs to a workplace or school, do not clear its TPM without the organization’s IT administrator’s direction. Microsoft warns that Windows Hello PIN or biometric sign-in may stop working until the PIN is reset. See Microsoft’s guidance on clearing TPM keys before taking that step.

BitLocker has a policy-controlled option to operate without a compatible TPM, but it is a BitLocker-specific workaround—not a way to make Windows detect a TPM or satisfy Windows 11’s TPM 2.0 requirement. Microsoft’s policy description says this configuration requires another startup authentication method: a password or a startup key stored on a USB flash drive. Whether the option is available depends on the device’s policy, especially on work or school PCs.

A 2018 Microsoft Q&A post records BitLocker-specific wording that asks an administrator to allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM through the Require additional authentication at startup policy for OS volumes. Treat that as an example of a BitLocker message, not as universal guidance for every TPM error. On a managed device, ask IT whether the policy is permitted and how it should be configured. Microsoft Learn describes the BitLocker policy requirements.
If BitLocker is involved, make sure you can access the recovery key before changing firmware or TPM settings. A firmware change can affect access to an encrypted drive, so do not proceed without a recovery plan. A USB flash drive is relevant only if your administrator chooses the startup-key method; generic TPM modules are not a safe recommendation without knowing the PC or motherboard model and its compatibility.

What the result means
- TPM is ready and version 2.0: The message may relate to the feature’s configuration or policy rather than a missing TPM. Continue with the instructions for the specific feature that produced it.
- TPM is present but disabled: Enable the correct firmware setting using instructions for your exact PC model.
- No TPM is detected after checking UEFI: The hardware may not provide a usable TPM, or manufacturer-specific compatibility needs investigation. Contact the PC maker before purchasing hardware or changing other firmware settings.
- BitLocker alone is blocked: An administrator may allow a password or USB startup key instead, if policy permits; that does not resolve TPM availability for Windows Hello or other features.
If you are still using Windows 10, note that Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. The TPM steps may help diagnose a hardware or firmware setting, but they do not change Windows 10’s support status.
