A TPM 2.0 bypass skips an installer’s hardware-eligibility check; it does not add a TPM, enable one that is switched off, or make an unsupported PC officially supported. Before considering a bypass, check whether TPM 2.0 is already present but disabled in the computer’s UEFI firmware.
What does “TPM 2.0 bypass” mean?
TPM stands for Trusted Platform Module. Windows 11 requires TPM version 2.0 on supported hardware. A bypass is a way to get past the installer’s check when a PC does not meet that requirement—for example, by preparing modified installation media or using setup registry settings.

The distinction is important: bypassing a check changes what Setup allows, not what hardware the PC has. It does not install a TPM, turn on a disabled firmware TPM, or supply the cryptographic functions associated with TPM hardware.
Check whether TPM 2.0 is disabled before bypassing
A PC that appears to lack a TPM may have one that is disabled or not detected because of its platform configuration. Check the UEFI firmware settings and the documentation for the exact computer or motherboard. Menu names and locations vary, so there is no universal setting path. Microsoft advises consulting the device maker’s instructions; its guidance also cautions users to consult the computer’s manual or manufacturer before clearing a TPM.

Microsoft describes TPM 2.0 as part of Windows 11’s hardware root of trust and identifies Windows security capabilities that rely on TPM functions. Skipping Setup’s check does not recreate those functions. The consequences for particular security features depend on the PC’s configuration and which features are used; a bypass does not mean every Windows security feature automatically stops working.
How a bypass differs from enabling TPM
| Option | What it changes | Windows 11 eligibility and support |
|---|---|---|
| Enable an existing TPM 2.0 in UEFI | Changes the device’s firmware configuration so Windows can detect its TPM, if the hardware supports it. | If the PC meets all applicable minimum requirements, this can address the TPM check without bypassing it. |
| Bypass an installer check | Relaxes or skips a Setup eligibility check; it does not add or enable TPM hardware. | The installation remains on unsupported hardware if the PC does not meet Microsoft’s minimum requirements. |
What Rufus says its Windows 11 media bypass does
The Rufus FAQ documents that Rufus 3.17 and later can create Windows 11 installation media that adds the BypassTPMCheck and BypassSecureBootCheck registry keys under the setup boot image’s LabConfig area. According to Rufus, this bypass applies to checks made when booting from the created media. It does not apply to checks made by launching setup.exe from within a running Windows installation. These are the project’s documented behaviors; they should not be treated as a guarantee for every later Rufus or Windows build.

What Microsoft says about unsupported installations
Microsoft says: “If Windows 11 is installed on a device that doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements, Microsoft won’t provide support for any issues.” Microsoft also warns that such a device may have compatibility problems and is not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. A bypass therefore changes an installer decision, not Microsoft’s support status or the uncertainty around compatibility and future updates.
