TP-Link Router Lights: What Each Status Means and How to Troubleshoot

TP-Link router lights vary by model and mode. Learn how to interpret common indicators and check a WAN connection when the Internet light is off.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal TP-Link router light code. The meaning of a color or blink pattern depends on the router model, hardware revision and sometimes its operating mode. Use the general guide below to narrow down what you are seeing, then verify the exact meaning in your model’s manual before treating it as definitive.

What do the lights on my TP-Link router mean?

Start by identifying the router’s exact model and hardware revision, then match the indicator label or symbol, whether it is steady, blinking or off, and its color. TP-Link says its guidance spans many Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 products, but behavior can differ between models. Its support FAQ advises consulting the manual for the specific model: TP-Link’s router lighting guidance.

Indicator or pattern Common interpretation Important qualification
Power steady or on The router has power or has completed startup. Some models use a single light for multiple states. Check the model manual.
Power flashing It may indicate startup or a firmware upgrade. Do not unplug the router if an upgrade may be underway. A quick flash can mean WPS on some models; check the manual before interpreting blink speed.
2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi on The corresponding wireless band is enabled. An off light may simply mean that band’s radio is disabled.
Wi-Fi flashing On some TP-Link Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 models, flashing indicates wireless traffic. Not every model uses blinking to show activity.
Internet green Internet service is available on the cited Archer C20 and Archer AX73 examples. This color meaning is not universal.
Internet orange On those cited examples, the WAN port is connected but Internet service is unavailable. Confirm the exact model and operating mode.
Internet off On the cited examples, the WAN connection is unplugged or not connected. General guidance also allows for no Internet service or bridge mode. Check the cable and operating mode before assuming a hardware failure.
WPS blinking WPS pairing is in progress. TP-Link says this can take up to two minutes. Pairing activity alone does not indicate an Internet outage.
Ethernet on or flashing A wired device or link is connected; flashing can indicate LAN traffic on some models. Per-port lights and combined indicators vary.
Wi-Fi 7 symbol display Some newer routers use symbols for startup or reset, setup readiness, connected operation, WPS results, updates, Internet disconnection or Wi-Fi being off. Symbol designs differ; consult the exact model guide.

These interpretations are starting points, not a replacement for the model-specific guide. For example, the Archer C20(EU) Revision 6.2.0 manual says its slow-flashing Power indicator can mean startup or a firmware upgrade and warns users not to disconnect power. Its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz indicators show whether those bands are enabled. The Archer AX73 V1 guide provides another model-specific reference.

Why is my TP-Link router light blinking?

A blink is not a diagnosis by itself. Check the LED label, blink speed, color and what the router is doing:

  • Power: A flashing light may indicate startup or a firmware upgrade. Leave the router powered on if an update may be in progress. Some models use a quick Power flash for WPS, so confirm the pattern in the manual.
  • Wi-Fi: On some models, blinking indicates wireless traffic. On others, the indicator may behave differently.
  • WPS: A blinking WPS indicator usually means pairing is underway, not that Internet service has failed. TP-Link says WPS may take up to two minutes. On some models, a successful WPS indicator may remain on for five minutes before turning off; the LED and result vary by model.
  • Ethernet: A blinking port light can indicate data activity on some models, but check the manual for your router’s per-port indicators.

The Archer C20 manual gives a model-specific example: its quick-flashing Power/WPS indication lasts about two minutes. Do not apply that timing to other routers.

Why is the Internet light off?

An off Internet indicator can mean the WAN cable is disconnected, the router is not receiving Internet service, or the device is in a mode such as bridge mode. The meaning varies by model. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide calls out both “Internet light off” and “WAN Port Unplugged.” Work through the connection checks before resetting the router.

1. Check the WAN cable and port

Make sure the Ethernet cable is firmly seated in the router’s WAN port and the modem’s Ethernet port. Use an RJ45 Ethernet cable, not an RJ11 phone cable. If the cable looks worn or may be faulty, TP-Link recommends trying CAT5E or higher; a replacement is not necessary if the existing cable is sound and working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Test the modem’s Internet connection directly

Disconnect the router, then connect a computer directly to the modem using Ethernet. If the computer also cannot access the Internet, TP-Link says the likely source is the modem or ISP; contact your provider. If the direct connection works, continue checking the router-to-modem link.

3. Isolate the router-side connection

TP-Link describes checking the WAN port by connecting the same cable from the router’s WAN port to a LAN port and observing the Ethernet and Internet indicators. Treat this as a diagnostic test only—not as the normal way to connect the modem. If the results suggest a faulty cable or port, try another cable first, then contact TP-Link support if needed.

4. Use the negotiation-speed setting only on applicable models

For certain one-LED models showing “WAN Port Unplugged” or a hardware-connection error, TP-Link suggests trying 100 Mbps full duplex at Advanced > Internet > Internet Port Negotiation Speed Setting. This is a model-specific troubleshooting option, not a general recommendation for all TP-Link routers.

Do not begin with a factory reset: it can erase the router’s configuration. TP-Link’s guide describes holding Reset for more than 10 seconds for the models it covers, but reset behavior and timing are model-specific. Follow your router’s own manual if a reset is eventually needed. See TP-Link’s Internet-light and WAN-port troubleshooting guide.

How to confirm what a particular light means

  1. Find the model number and hardware revision on the router’s label or in its management interface.
  2. Open the support page for that exact model and revision, then consult its user guide.
  3. Match the indicator name or symbol, color and state—steady, slow blink, quick blink or off.
  4. Check whether the router is in a mode that changes expected indicator behavior.
  5. If the Internet light is off, test whether a computer can access the Internet directly through the modem to separate an upstream outage from a router-side issue.
