Towering glacial ice cliffs may collapse in fits and starts

A 2019–2023 ICESat-2 record shows Antarctic ice cliffs can retreat faster than models during brief collapse bursts, then stabilize instead of triggering an unstoppable cascade.

Do Antarctic ice cliffs collapse all at once? New satellite observations indicate that the tallest cliffs can retreat in sudden bursts, but the failures observed from 2019 to 2023 generally stopped rather than triggering an unstoppable, ice-sheet-wide cascade.

The finding weakens the case for runaway marine ice-cliff instability (MICI) in the observed locations, while preserving a serious warning: short episodes of unusually fast retreat could still increase near-term ice loss and sea-level rise compared with models that assume uniformly stable glacier fronts.

What the ICESat-2 observations found

A 2026 analysis by researchers at MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution used NASA’s ICESat-2 laser altimeter to revisit more than 15,000 Antarctic ice cliffs. The satellite sampled the fronts about every three months between 2019 and 2023, allowing researchers to track changes rather than infer behavior from a single image.

The average observed cliff was about 30 meters high. That is far below the roughly 100-meter critical height commonly used in earlier MICI models. Only a small number of cliffs approached that scale; one of four closely studied tall examples reached 127 meters. A separate University of Michigan account described a related archive of more than 15,000 aerial and satellite images used to examine cliff failures.

The tallest cliffs did retreat faster during collapse episodes than existing models predicted. However, the acceleration was brief. After a burst of retreat, ice spread back toward the ocean and the glacier front stabilized instead of exposing successively taller inland cliffs.

Why this differs from the classic MICI scenario

MICI is a proposed feedback loop for marine ice sheets. In its simplest form, a very tall vertical cliff fails under its own weight. The collapse exposes a taller cliff farther inland, which then fails in turn. Repeating failures could produce a runaway retreat and rapid ice discharge.

The new observations show that the first part of that sequence can occur: a tall face can fail rapidly. They do not show the second part continuing indefinitely. The observed glaciers eventually developed conditions that slowed or stopped retreat.

Question Earlier MICI-style interpretation Observed 2019–2023 behavior
Evidence Model experiments built around assumed failure thresholds, often near 100 meters Repeated ICESat-2 measurements of more than 15,000 Antarctic cliffs
Collapse pattern A failure exposes a taller cliff and drives a continuing cascade Rapid retreat occurs in bursts, then the glacier front commonly stabilizes
Main control Cliff height is treated as the dominant trigger Height interacts with mélange, water depth, bedrock shape and ice-thinning rate
Sea-level implication Runaway total disintegration can produce extreme rates Runaway breakdown is not supported in the observed examples, but partial rapid losses may still raise projected rates

What stops a retreat from becoming runaway?

Ice mélange provides back-force

Ice mélange is a dense, disordered mixture of sea ice and broken icebergs packed in front of a glacier. It can press against the ice front and act as a temporary buttress. When mélange thickens or becomes more tightly locked together, it reduces the freedom of the cliff to flow and calve. When it disperses, the front can become more exposed, so its effect changes with season and ocean conditions.

Deep water can buoy the front

Water depth affects how much of a marine cliff is supported from below. Deeper water can increase buoyant forces and alter the geometry of the submerged ice, producing a counterforce that helps a retreating front settle. A model that uses cliff height without the underwater profile can therefore misjudge whether a tall face will keep failing.

Bedrock highs interrupt retreat

Rises in the bedrock beneath a glacier can act as pinning points. As grounded ice passes over a sill or ridge, the contact with the bed can increase resistance and slow the flow toward the ocean. Two cliffs with similar visible heights may therefore have very different stability if one sits above a bedrock high and the other does not.

Collapse rapidly lowers the cliff

A collapse does not leave the same vertical wall in place. Removing the upper part of a face and allowing the remaining ice to spread can quickly reduce cliff height and the gravitational stress driving failure. The retreating front may thus move faster than a model for a short period, then lose the geometry needed for continued rapid collapse.

What this means for sea-level rise

The observations rule out neither ice loss nor damaging sea-level rise. They change the likely shape of the risk. University of Michigan reporting described runaway-breakdown projections as roughly twice as fast as projections that assume more stable glaciers. The satellite record does not support applying that extreme, total-disintegration pathway to every vulnerable glacier.

At the same time, the study found that actual retreat during active failures was faster than modeled. A glacier can therefore contribute more ice over a limited interval even if it later restabilizes. Sea-level projections that smooth away these bursts may understate short-term discharge, while projections that assume uninterrupted collapse may overstate long-term loss.

The practical result is a narrower but still consequential range of possibilities: rapid partial failures remain credible, whereas a self-sustaining collapse of the entire Antarctic ice sheet is not demonstrated by the observed cases.

How scientists should improve future projections

Cliff height remains a useful warning signal, but it cannot serve as a stand-alone stability test. Future ice-sheet models need to represent the variables that repeatedly appeared in the observations:

  • the thickness and mechanical strength of mélange in front of the glacier;
  • water depth and the shape of the submerged ice face;
  • bedrock rises, pinning points and other subglacial topography;
  • the rate at which the cliff is thinning before and after a collapse;
  • the timing and duration of retreat bursts rather than only long-term average speed.

Repeated satellite altimetry is especially valuable because it can reveal whether a fast-moving front is still accelerating or has already begun to stabilize. More observations from vulnerable parts of West Antarctica are needed before researchers can confidently generalize the behavior seen in the first tracked examples.

What readers should take away

  • Antarctic ice cliffs can collapse rapidly, but the observed retreats were usually short-lived.
  • Most measured cliffs were about 30 meters high, well below the approximately 100-meter threshold used in earlier MICI modeling.
  • A 127-meter cliff was among the tallest intensively tracked examples, not a typical Antarctic cliff.
  • Mélange, water depth, bedrock topography and thinning rate can stabilize a front even after a major failure.
  • The evidence argues against runaway total disintegration in the observed glaciers, while leaving open the possibility of faster sea-level contributions from repeated partial failures.
