Authenticator apps calculate login codes on your device; the service calculates its own expected code using the same secret and the current time. TOTP—time-based one-time password—makes those independent calculations line up for a short interval. The countdown shows how much time remains in that interval, not how long the code is guaranteed to work everywhere.
How does an authenticator app generate a login code?
When you enroll an authenticator, the service and app are provisioned with the same secret and compatible settings. The app keeps that secret and calculates a code locally; it does not receive a new code from the service every few seconds. At sign-in, the service’s verifier performs the corresponding calculation and compares the result with the code you enter.

TOTP extends HOTP, the HMAC-based one-time-password algorithm. In simplified terms, both sides use the shared secret and a counter derived from the current time to calculate a keyed hash, then truncate that result to a short, readable value. RFC 6238 defines the counter as T = floor((current Unix time − T0) / X), where T0 is the starting time and X is the time-step size. The RFC’s defaults are the Unix epoch for T0 and 30 seconds for X; the settings are system parameters established during provisioning.
RFC 6238 describes HMAC-SHA-1 as the HOTP basis and permits TOTP implementations to use HMAC-SHA-256 or HMAC-SHA-512. The verifier and app must use compatible parameters, including the hash and output length; not every app or service necessarily uses the same settings. RFC 6238: TOTP specification

What does the countdown mean?
The app usually displays the code for the current time-step counter. The code changes when the clock crosses into the next step, so you might see only a few seconds left or nearly a full interval. In RFC 6238, the IETF recommends a 30-second step as a balance between security and usability. That is a recommended default, not a promise that every service uses the same interval or accepts codes for precisely that long.
A verifier can allow a bounded timing window to account for clock differences, network delay, and the time it takes someone to type the digits. A wider window can make delayed entries more likely to work, but it also lengthens the opportunity to use an exposed code. RFC 6238 recommends bounded tolerance and says at most one time step should be allowed for network delay. NIST likewise says a verifier’s validity lifetime should account for expected clock drift in either direction, network delay, and entry time. RFC 6238; NIST SP 800-63B-4

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Why might an authenticator code be rejected?
A code can be correct for the app’s clock and still fall outside the verifier’s accepted time window. Common possibilities include the phone and server clocks being out of sync, submitting near a time-step boundary, copying from the wrong account entry, or a mismatch in the enrolled secret or algorithm settings. The exact error message and remedy depend on the service.
- Check that your device is set to update its date and time automatically.
- Confirm that the app entry matches the account you are signing into.
- Enter the current code promptly. If it is close to changing, wait for the next one.
- If codes continue to fail, use the service’s official recovery or re-enrollment instructions.
Do not share or post the authenticator’s setup QR code or secret: someone who obtains it can generate matching codes. If you replace your phone, enrollment and migration steps vary by provider and app. NIST advises rebinding a software OTP app to the account on the replacement device and invalidating the old binding, or using an eligible sync fabric that meets its requirements. Follow the service’s current instructions and retain its recovery method. NIST SP 800-63B-4

Are authenticator app codes safe?
TOTP can add a possession factor alongside a password. NIST classifies OTP authenticators as “something you have.” But a manually entered code is not phishing-resistant: a fraudulent site can prompt you for a live code and relay it to the real service before it expires. Manual entry does not bind the code to the specific login session or website you intended to authenticate.
NIST SP 800-63B-4 states: “Authenticators that involve the manual entry of an authenticator output (e.g., out-of-band and OTP authenticators) SHALL NOT be considered phishing-resistant because the manual entry does not bind the authenticator output to the specific session being authenticated.” The guidance was published in July 2025 and supersedes the earlier SP 800-63B edition. The shared secret also deserves protection: the verifier needs it to calculate expected codes, so it must restrict access to that material. The short numeric output can be guessed, which is why NIST calls for rate limiting when outputs are under 64 bits. A verifier should also prevent a code from succeeding again after it has already been accepted while valid, limiting replay.

A smartphone app is not the only way to use TOTP. A dedicated hardware token can generate TOTP codes too, but the service must support the token’s configuration. NIST lists both TOTP smartphone apps and TOTP hardware devices as OTP authenticator examples. That does not establish compatibility for a particular token and website, so check with the service before choosing a device. NIST authenticator examples

Passkeys and security keys using WebAuthn/FIDO2 can offer phishing resistance through verifier-name binding: authentication is tied to the legitimate site rather than a code that can be copied elsewhere. NIST identifies WebAuthn as an example and requires verifiers at AAL2 to offer at least one phishing-resistant option. The available methods and enrollment rules vary by service; compare setup and recovery, device portability, site support, where credentials are held, and whether you must manually copy a code.
