The Vampire Counts rework in Total War: WARHAMMER III shifts the faction’s campaign loop toward vampires themselves. Recruitment is gated by military buildings and two resources, Corpses and Blood. Blood also pays for Vampire Lairs and Bloodlines. That is a reading of the design, not a measured player verdict, because Creative Assembly has published no survey or controlled comparison. The mechanics below are the developer’s own.
What Creative Assembly says it was fixing
The developer says the rework aims to capture the Vampire Counts’ “Midnight Aristocracy” and the fantasy of raising undead hordes. Its stated problem with the old Raise Dead approach was progression: battle markers could hand out tier 5 units after low-tier fights, which undercut the point of building up a province’s military. The new loop is meant to make provincial military infrastructure matter.

How Raise Dead recruitment works now
Creative Assembly’s feature post says: “Raise Dead is now officially the default recruitment method for your undead hordes.” It adds: “All units (other than the very lowest-tier ones) now have unit capacity, and require military buildings to increase that cap.”
Recommended Free Tools
- A unit can be recruited anywhere, provided the faction has the capacity and the resources.
- Recruitment is no longer chance-based.
- Capacity is raised by military buildings, so building choices decide how big an army you can field.
Corpses and Blood: the two-resource economy
| Corpses | Blood | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Generated in a province as units die there | Mainly from buildings that convert provincial Corpses |
| Recruitment role | Pays for lower-tier units, mostly tiers 1–3 | Also required for tiers 4–5 |
| Other uses | Feeds Blood conversion | Confederation mechanics, selected critical buildings, Blood Decrees, Vampire Lairs, Bloodlines, technologies |
Corpses tie recruitment to where fighting happens, since each battle’s casualties supply that province. Blood is the scarcer, contested resource. Spending it on elite units competes directly with spending it on faction development, and that trade-off is the new strategic layer.

Vampire Lairs: the vampire-centred part
Lairs are the clearest reason the faction can feel vampire-focused. You find a lair and spend time developing it. You then choose traits and bonuses for a dormant Vampire Lord before awakening that lord. Creative Assembly says the intent is to emphasize the pre-eminence of Vampires and celebrate the different Bloodlines. Because lairs and Bloodlines are paid for with Blood, they sit inside the same economy as your armies rather than beside it.
Why it reads as “commanding vampires”
The official mechanics support this interpretation through four contrasts:
- Access: chance and battle-marker access gives way to capacity-and-resource-gated access.
- High-tier units: they now require military buildings and Blood instead of a lucky post-battle pool.
- Battles: they feed province-specific Corpses, which feed Blood generation.
- Lords: you shape a Vampire Lord through a lair, instead of simply recruiting a generic one.
These describe intended mechanics. The sources do not establish overall balance or whether every player prefers the new loop.
