As of October 13, 2026, the official material for Torchlight: Infinite’s SS14 season explains Tartarus’s core loop and its new Follower system, but does not establish exact Tartarus difficulty tiers, unlock requirements, or tier-by-tier rewards. The season is scheduled to begin globally on October 16 at 10:00, according to the official update log. Until then, players can understand how the announced progression works, but should not rely on a specific difficulty recommendation or a complete reward chart.

What is Tartarus in SS14?

Tartarus is the SS14 seasonal mechanic built around Caged Beasts in the Netherrealm. The season’s story casts the player as a Warden tasked with recapturing fugitives, pressuring and punishing them, and preparing for a riot. In practical terms, the published mechanic combines encounters in the Netherrealm with a new companion-customization layer: Followers and their exclusive Tartarus skills.

The official season description supplies the setting and broad premise, while the update log provides the clearest concrete details about Followers and skills. It does not, in the pre-launch material available on October 13, publish a complete set of Tartarus difficulty levels or their progression rules.

How does Tartarus progression work?

Build around Followers

SS14 introduces Followers as a new growth system. The official update log names four species: Lion Queen, Lone Wolf, Mammoth, and Witch Rat. Follower quality affects two things: how many skill slots the Follower has and the quality of its Active Skills. This makes the system a companion-customization layer rather than simply a choice of creature appearance.

The announced information does not specify acquisition rates, quality thresholds, or which species or skill combination is strongest. Treat quality as a factor in a Follower’s available customization and skill strength, not as a basis for assuming a particular progression route.

Use Follower-only Tartarus skills

Tartarus skills are exclusive to Followers. They can buff the player or allies, or debuff enemies. The official update log gives examples that cover damage and control, a group benefit, and recovery:

Skill Announced effect Role and practical fit
Black Hole Creates a field for four seconds that deals damage and pulls enemies inward. While it deals damage, allies gain an additional 8% Affliction effect for four seconds. Damage and grouping, with an ally benefit tied to the damage window. It may suit a setup that can make use of Affliction, but the update does not establish it as a universal best choice.
Life Tonic Restores allies for 3% of maximum Life per second for four seconds. If the player is at Low Life when it is cast, it additionally restores 30% of the player’s maximum Life, with a ten-second interval. Recovery, with a conditional additional restoration for the player at Low Life. The condition and interval matter when deciding whether it fits a build or encounter.
Lightning Storm Tracks enemies for four seconds and periodically strikes them; lightning hits inflict Numbed. Enemy pressure and debuffing over a timed window. The listed effect does not provide a ranking against the other skills.

These are examples from the official update log, not a complete skill list or an effectiveness ranking. Compare skills by role, duration, condition, and whether their effects suit your build. Black Hole’s pull and Affliction benefit, Life Tonic’s Low Life condition, and Lightning Storm’s tracking and Numbed effect answer different needs; none is shown to be optimal in every situation.

Torchlight Mac SB
  • Randomization – Game level layouts are randomly created, so each adventure will always be unique.
  • Easy, approachable interface – Torchlight is designed to be easy to play right from the beginning. With an intuitive interface, players can dive right in!
  • Character Classes – Players will create and customize a character, choosing from 3 main Classes: The Destroyer, The Alchemist, or The Vanquisher.
  • Pets – choose a pet to accompany your character. Pets can level up along with the player; they can also fight, carry items, and perform helpful tasks.

How hard is Tartarus, and what do higher difficulties reward?

The exact answer is not yet established by the official pre-launch material available on October 13, 2026. The reviewed update does not publish all Tartarus difficulty tiers, their unlock requirements, monster scaling, or rewards by tier. That is an evidence limit in the published details, not proof that the game has no difficulty settings.

Other SS14 systems show that challenge and reward can be linked, but they do not fill in Tartarus’s missing progression chart. Listed compass effects raise monster health while modifying drops. A listed Warden Cache Pactspirit increases cache drops and adds chances for duplication or reopening. Those examples indicate that the season has challenge-and-reward modifiers elsewhere; they should not be mistaken for a Tartarus difficulty ladder or proof of how Tartarus tiers work.

Which Follower skill should you use?

Choose based on the job you need the Follower to perform, rather than an unverified tier list:

Rank #3
  • For grouping enemies and supporting Affliction: Black Hole pulls enemies together and gives allies an additional 8% Affliction effect during its four-second damage window.
  • For recovery: Life Tonic restores allies over four seconds and has an additional player-healing effect when cast at Low Life. Its ten-second interval is part of that effect’s timing.
  • For tracking enemies and applying a debuff: Lightning Storm follows enemies for four seconds, periodically strikes, and inflicts Numbed on lightning hits.

These comparisons describe the published effects, not tested performance or a complete ranking. The update log does not provide enough information to declare one skill best for every build or to recommend a particular Follower species for a specific playstyle.

What should players verify after launch?

The global SS14 start is scheduled for October 16 at 10:00 in the official update log. Once the season is live, check the in-game Tartarus interface and current official notes for details that were not specified in the pre-launch announcement:

  • Which Tartarus difficulty levels are available and how to unlock them.
  • How enemy strength changes between levels.
  • What rewards are attached to each level, and whether any reward requires a particular condition.
  • How Followers are obtained and how quality changes their slots and Active Skills in practice.
  • Whether the live skill descriptions add conditions, limits, or changes to the examples published before launch.

Until those values are published or visible in-game, the useful preparation is to understand the announced loop and choose Follower skills for their tactical roles. A starting difficulty cannot be recommended responsibly from the pre-launch details alone.
