No, Tor Browser is not available for iPhone. The Tor Project’s installation guidance states plainly: “There is no Tor Browser for iOS.” For iPhone users, the Tor Project recommends a different app, Onion Browser, which routes traffic through Tor. That recommendation comes with a limit you should understand before relying on it: the Tor Project says Onion Browser does not provide the same privacy protections as Tor Browser on desktop or Android.
What the Tor Project recommends on iPhone
The Tor Project’s installation page names Onion Browser as its recommended iOS option, describing it as an open-source app that uses Tor routing and is developed by someone who works closely with the Tor Project. The Apple App Store listing identifies Onion Browser as an iPhone and iPad app. Both points were checked on 7 October 2026. Treat Onion Browser as the iOS alternative to Tor Browser, not as a version of it.

Why Onion Browser is not the same as Tor Browser
The Tor Project attributes the gap to Apple’s rules for browser engines. Outside the European Union exception described below, iPhone browser apps must use Apple’s WebKit engine, and the Tor Project says that prevents Onion Browser from matching the protections built into Tor Browser. Because Tor Browser is not sold for iOS, the comparison is about what the iPhone allows, not a choice between two equivalent products.
The EU alternative-engine entitlement
Apple’s developer documentation describes a narrower exception. In Apple’s words, “iOS and iPadOS include capabilities that let apps use alternative browser engines — browser engines other than WebKit — for dedicated browser apps and apps providing in-app browsing experiences in the EU.” The exception has several conditions:
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- It applies to users in the European Union.
- It requires iOS or iPadOS 17.4 or later.
- It is available only to apps Apple authorizes, and each app must meet eligibility rules.
- Authorized apps must keep meeting ongoing privacy and security requirements.
This exception does not mean Tor Browser has launched on iPhone. Nothing in the Tor Project or Apple material establishes that Onion Browser uses an alternative engine. Outside the EU, or on an iPhone running an older system, the WebKit requirement applies as described above.
Where Tor routing stops in Onion Browser
Onion Browser’s developers say its Tor routing is confined to the app itself. Traffic from other parts of iOS can take a normal connection. Two cases matter in practice:

- Embedded media: some iOS traffic, including audio or video embeds, may use the normal connection rather than Tor.
- Signing in: logging in to a site, even inside Onion Browser, can let that site link your activity to your identity. Using an account you normally use outside Tor defeats the purpose of Tor routing.
Why you should not route Tor through a regular iPhone browser
The Tor Project advises against sending Tor traffic through ordinary browsers. Those browsers are not built with Tor Browser’s privacy protections and can expose identifying details through DNS or WebRTC leaks, browser fingerprinting, cookies, or the cache. This is why the Tor Project recommends a Tor-specific app on iPhone rather than a general browser with a Tor setting added.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsing Tor on a blocked network
If Tor connections are blocked where you are, the Tor Project lists Snowflake as a supported option for Onion Browser on iOS. Snowflake may help you reach the Tor network, but it does not guarantee access, and it does not change the privacy limits described above.

Choosing between Onion Browser and Tor Browser
Your real choice depends on which device you have and whether you specifically need Tor Browser. The table below compares the two paths using the Tor Project guidance checked on 7 October 2026.
| Factor | Onion Browser on iPhone | Tor Browser on a supported platform |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Available on iPhone and iPad through the App Store | Supported platforms include Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux; not available for iOS |
| Browser engine | Must use WebKit on iPhone, except where Apple’s EU entitlement applies to an authorized app; no evidence that Onion Browser uses such an entitlement | Not stated in the Tor Project guidance cited here |
| Privacy protections | Tor Project states these are not the same as Tor Browser’s | The baseline the Tor Project uses for comparison |
| Scope of Tor routing | Confined to the app; some embedded iOS audio or video may use a normal connection | Not stated in the Tor Project guidance cited here for this comparison |
| Snowflake support | Supported on iOS, according to Tor Project guidance | Not stated in the Tor Project guidance cited here for this comparison |
If you need Tor Browser specifically, use it on a supported computer or Android device. If you only have an iPhone and need Tor-routed browsing, Onion Browser is the app the Tor Project recommends, with the limits described above.

Checklist before you rely on Onion Browser
- Confirm you are installing Onion Browser from the App Store, not a copy with a similar name.
- Do not sign in to personal accounts during a session you want to keep separate from your identity.
- Avoid embedded audio and video if you need every byte of that session to go through Tor.
- Do not claim Onion Browser offers the same privacy as Tor Browser, and do not assume Tor routing alone makes any browser equivalent.
- If Tor is blocked on your network, try Snowflake in Onion Browser, and expect that it may not work everywhere.
