Top Test Automation University Courses: A Practical Learning Path

Choose a Test Automation University course by your goal: learn programming fundamentals, automate browser tests, test APIs, or strengthen test design. The top-course list is a dated 2023 completion snapshot, so check the current catalog before enrolling.

The best Test Automation University course depends on what you want to learn: start with a programming course if you are new to coding, choose a browser-testing course for UI automation, or take an API course to practice service testing. TAU advertises free online courses; its available “top courses” ranking is a January 2023 snapshot of completions, not a current ranking of course quality or outcomes.

How to choose a Test Automation University course

Match a course to your next practical goal, your existing programming experience, and the language or tool you expect to use. The official Test Automation University homepage describes its courses as free and lists videos, transcripts, quizzes, credits, ranks, badges, and certificates. Check the catalog for current availability before you plan a sequence: the historical popularity article does not establish that every listed course remains available.

  • New to programming: Choose one programming-language foundation course before taking on a framework.
  • Want to automate browser behavior: Pick Cypress, Selenium, or Playwright according to your target project and stack.
  • Want to test services: Start with an API-testing course, then practice requests and assertions using its chosen tool.
  • Want stronger test design: Add a course on automation foundations or element locators alongside framework-specific learning.

TAU’s homepage uses the headline “Become a test automation superstar – Free!” This is promotional wording, not a guarantee of a particular learning or career outcome. Visit the official Test Automation University site to review its current catalog.

Courses for learners new to programming

If you do not yet write code comfortably, begin with programming fundamentals rather than jumping directly into browser automation. The January 2023 completion-based list included Introduction to JavaScript, Java Programming, and Python Programming. Choose the language that fits your likely testing environment or the projects you want to build; the available evidence does not establish one as universally best.

  • JavaScript: A sensible foundation if your next goal is a JavaScript-based browser-testing route.
  • Java: Consider it if your team or target codebase uses Java, or if you intend to follow the Java Selenium path.
  • Python: A language-focused starting point if Python matches your projects or learning goals.

Before enrolling, check the official catalog for each course’s current listing and content. The 2023 article reflects completions during the preceding year; it does not establish current availability or compare teaching quality.

Courses for browser UI automation

TAU’s historical top-course selection includes browser-automation options using Cypress and Selenium, while Applitools separately highlighted Playwright with JavaScript in its editorial course selection. These are different routes, not a controlled comparison of frameworks. Choose based on your project’s language, existing team conventions, and the framework you need to learn.

Course or route Best fit Evidence and depth
Introduction to Cypress Learners whose target browser-testing work uses Cypress. Included in Applitools’ January 2023 completion-based top ten; check the catalog for current availability.
Selenium WebDriver with Java Learners who want browser automation with Java and Selenium WebDriver. Included in the January 2023 completion-based top ten; check the catalog for current availability.
Playwright with JavaScript Learners whose target work uses Playwright and JavaScript. Highlighted in Applitools’ separate January 2023 editorial selection; that selection is not a framework comparison.
Advanced Playwright Learners who already know Playwright and want more depth. The official course page describes six chapters and recommends that learners unfamiliar with Playwright first look at its Introduction to Playwright course.

For Playwright, follow the prerequisite advice on the official Advanced Playwright course page. For the other named courses, verify that the current catalog still offers the course before setting a study schedule.

Courses for API testing

The 2023 completion-based top-ten list includes two API-focused choices that offer different entry points:

  • Exploring Service APIs through Test Automation: Consider this introductory exploration if you want to understand how service APIs fit into test automation.
  • API Test Automation with Postman: Consider this tool-oriented route if you want to learn API testing through Postman.

These recommendations identify course topics, not measured differences in learner outcomes or course quality. Confirm present availability and course details in the official catalog.

Courses for test design and locator skills

Framework syntax is only part of automation work. The January 2023 list also featured Setting a Foundation for Successful Test Automation and Web Element Locator Strategies. The first is a fit for learners who want principles for establishing an automation effort; the second addresses the practical skill of locating elements in a web interface. Either can complement a framework course, depending on which gap you need to address.

A practical course sequence

  1. Choose one language foundation if you are not yet comfortable reading and writing code: JavaScript, Java, or Python, based on your target stack.
  2. Pick one testing direction: browser UI automation or API testing. Avoid trying to learn several frameworks at once before you can write and debug basic tests.
  3. Take the matching introductory tool course: Cypress, Selenium WebDriver with Java, Playwright with JavaScript, or an API course such as the Postman option.
  4. Add a design-focused course on test-automation foundations or element locators where it addresses a concrete gap in your work.
  5. For Playwright learners, progress to Advanced Playwright after learning the basics; its official page describes six chapters and directs unfamiliar learners to the introductory course first.
  6. Build practice work as you learn: write a small set of tests against an application or service you can access, keep the code in a repository, and document what each test checks. This is a practical way to show your work, not a claim that TAU issues or endorses a portfolio.

How to interpret the “top courses” list

Applitools published “The Top 10 Test Automation University Courses” on January 5, 2023. It says the list is ranked by total course completions over the preceding year. That makes it a historical measure of platform engagement—not a 2026 popularity ranking, an independent course-quality evaluation, or evidence of job outcomes. The article does not provide the underlying completion counts.

Its introduction reported nearly 140,000 students signed up as of November 2022; that is a historical figure, not a current enrollment count. The TAU homepage also has an undated enrollment invitation referring to “150K software engineers,” which should not be treated as a dated or independently audited statistic. Applitools’ separate seven-course editorial selection is another source of recommendations, but it is also an Applitools publication rather than an independent evaluation.

If instructor identity or subject area matters to your choice, consult the TAU instructor directory. The available course-selection evidence does not compare instructor effectiveness, completion rates, or career results.

Or skip the browser setup

If you are building browser automation and need a clean screenshot of a page, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API request can return an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
