Cypress’s most useful test-automation features cover different layers: end-to-end tests exercise complete browser journeys, component tests isolate UI pieces in a real browser, API tests check HTTP behavior, and accessibility checks add another layer to functional coverage. Automatic retry-ability, network interception, browser debugging, and Cypress Cloud support those tests; none removes the need to choose the right scope or investigate unstable results.
What Cypress can test
Cypress supports end-to-end, component, API, and accessibility testing. Accessibility is best treated as an additional layer on functional tests, not as a replacement for them. The appropriate feature depends on what you need to validate: a rendered component, an HTTP contract, or a complete user journey.

| Test layer | Best suited to | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Component | Rendering, interaction, styles, and behavior of a component in a real browser. | That a complete user journey or production server integration works. |
| API | HTTP behavior such as CRUD operations, error responses, permissions, authentication setup, data seeding, or GraphQL response shape. | That the user interface behaves correctly during a browser journey. |
| End-to-end | Workflows such as authentication, purchasing, persistence across pages, and deployment smoke checks. | That every isolated component state or API edge case has been covered. |
| Accessibility | Automated checks for violations of known accessibility rules, supplemented by explicit assertions and manual review. | Full accessibility or conformance certification. |
End-to-end testing for complete user journeys
End-to-end (E2E) tests drive an application through a real browser, exercising the application and backend together. They are useful when success depends on multiple pages and services working in sequence—for example, logging in, completing a purchase, or confirming that a change persists after navigation.
This realism has a cost: E2E tests generally need test infrastructure and are more involved to set up and maintain than focused component checks. Use them for important journeys and smoke checks, then cover lower-level variations with more targeted tests where that gives faster, clearer feedback.

Component testing in a real browser
Cypress Component Testing mounts a component directly in a browser rather than relying on a simulated DOM. That makes it possible to inspect browser rendering and styles while testing interactions and behavior in a narrower scope than a full application workflow. The official mounting libraries listed in Cypress’s component-testing guide cover React, Angular, Vue, and Svelte.
The documented workflow includes automatic waiting, the visual command log and Time Travel snapshots, browser DevTools, spies and stubs, network interception, and clock control. Cypress can use the same project for component and E2E suites, so teams can keep both test layers together while choosing the scope that fits each case.
API testing for HTTP behavior
Cypress can issue HTTP calls and assert on their responses. API tests are useful for checking CRUD lifecycles, error handling, permission boundaries, authentication setup, data seeding, and GraphQL response shapes. They can isolate server behavior or prepare data for browser tests, but they do not replace E2E coverage when the question is whether the interface guides a user through a journey correctly.

Automatic waiting and test retries are different
Retry-ability waits for changing application state
Cypress links queries and assertions and retries them until they pass or time out. This helps tests interact with dynamic pages without relying on arbitrary sleeps for every changing element. It does not make an assertion meaningful if it targets the wrong state or element.
Configured retries rerun a failed test
Test retries are a separate configuration feature and are disabled by default. Cypress’s guide illustrates retries: 2, which permits up to two additional attempts after the first failed attempt. A later passing attempt can help reveal intermittent failures, but it is still evidence of instability to investigate—not proof that the test or application is sound.
Use network interception to choose what the test proves
cy.intercept() can observe requests, wait for them, assert on request or response properties, and stub a response body, status, headers, or delay. Choose between a real response and a stub based on the behavior under test.

Use real responses for the client-server path
When a critical happy path must verify the actual client-server contract, let the request reach the server and assert on the real response. Cypress’s documentation says that when requests are not stubbed, “this guarantees that the contract between your client and server is working correctly.” That is the documentation’s description of real responses reaching the server; the test still depends on suitable server and database setup, and may take longer than a stubbed check.
Use stubs for controlled edge cases
Stubbing lets you test conditions such as server errors, unusual payloads, or delayed responses without changing server state for each case. It is fast and controlled, but it does not exercise the real endpoint, and the mock can drift from production behavior. A balanced suite keeps real responses for paths where integration matters and uses stubs for the variations that are difficult or costly to produce reliably on the server.
Debug failures with the runner and browser tools
Cypress documents a visual command log, snapshots, readable errors and stack traces, and access to browser DevTools while tests run. These tools can help inspect the sequence of commands and the application state around a failure. They improve visibility into a run, but do not guarantee that a test failure will be self-explanatory; use the command history and browser inspection to distinguish an application defect from a test assumption or fixture problem.

Run across browsers and use Cloud for team workflows
Cypress’s feature overview lists local and CI execution in Firefox and Chrome-family browsers, including Edge. Cypress Cloud adds recorded-run and team-oriented capabilities described by Cypress, including Test Replay, parallelization, spec prioritization, Auto Cancellation, integrations, analytics, and UI Coverage. Cloud and premium capabilities may depend on plan; check current packaging before choosing a plan or assuming a feature is included.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Add accessibility checks without mistaking scans for certification
Accessibility checks can be added to Cypress tests with community plugins such as cypress-axe, ordinary assertions, or Cypress Accessibility Cloud, which the official guide identifies as a paid product. Scan important workflows such as signup and checkout; also assert that controls have expected labels and accessible names, and test keyboard navigation and focus behavior where relevant.

Automated scanners catch violations of known rules, not every barrier a person may encounter. A clean scan cannot prove that a UI is fully accessible, so retain explicit assertions and manual review.

- Scope: use component tests for isolated UI behavior, API tests for HTTP behavior, and E2E tests for complete journeys.
- Environment realism: use real server responses when the client-server contract is the point; use stubs when controlled edge cases are the point.
- Feedback and setup: focused component and API checks can be simpler to run than E2E suites that need application and backend infrastructure.
- Diagnosis: use the interactive runner and DevTools locally; evaluate Cloud’s recorded-run and team capabilities when CI diagnosis or coordination matters.
- Accessibility confidence: combine automated known-rule scans with assertions and manual checks.
- Cost and packaging: the Cypress App can be used locally; Cloud and premium features may be plan-gated, so verify current plan details.
Or skip the browser setup
Cypress is for automating application tests; if your task is to capture a website screenshot rather than test a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API can return an image or PDF from one GET request. For example, using the target URL shown in the product example:
ScreenshotNeo API documentation
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are handled before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents and MCP clients. - The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
