Top ASX Shares to Watch in October 2026: Three Ideas and What to Check

A Motley Fool Australia article published on 3 October 2026 names NEXTDC (ASX:NXT), CSL (ASX:CSL) and Netwealth Group (ASX:NWL) as its October share ideas. Treat them as a research shortlist, not a verified ranking of the best shares to buy: the available evidence does not establish their latest FY26 results, October valuations or whether their share prices are attractive.

Three October share ideas—and the case each one represents

The three names reflect different investment themes: digital infrastructure growth, a potential healthcare recovery and wealth-platform growth. Those themes can help frame further research, but they are not proof that a company has delivered on its prospects or that its shares are fairly priced.

NEXTDC (ASX:NXT): data-centre growth

The 3 October Motley Fool Australia article presents NEXTDC as a digital-infrastructure idea, associating potential demand with AI, cloud computing and digital services. It also reports FY26 growth and higher contracted utilisation. Those figures have not been independently verified against NEXTDC’s primary FY26 results here, so check the company’s own release before relying on them.

For the investment case, examine how much capital is required to build capacity, how reliably projects are delivered, whether contracted capacity becomes operating utilisation, and how construction and funding needs affect returns. Demand growth alone does not settle those questions.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

CSL (ASX:CSL): a recovery thesis

The same article describes CSL as a recovery idea, citing plasma economics, efficiency, manufacturing yields and demand for therapies. That is the article’s thesis, not evidence that a recovery is complete. Read CSL’s primary FY26 results and guidance, then assess whether changes in margins and plasma collection economics support the case.

Netwealth Group (ASX:NWL): wealth-platform growth

The article presents Netwealth as a platform-growth idea, linking the case to adviser adoption and funds administered. To test it, look for the company’s reported platform growth measures and whether they translate into revenue. Consider competition and valuation alongside growth; the source’s thesis does not resolve those questions.

How the October market backdrop changes the questions

On 29 September 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia raised its cash rate target by 25 basis points to 4.60%, saying inflation remained elevated and some upside risks were materialising. At the media conference that day, Governor Michele Bullock said: “Higher interest rates are needed to ensure inflation returns to target.” This is a dated policy decision and explanation, not a forecast of how shares will perform.

Higher rates make it particularly important to scrutinise borrowing costs, funding needs and the assumptions used to value expected future earnings or cash flows. The ASX Investor Update’s FY27 outlook discussion records three listed investment company leaders taking views that ranged from mildly bearish, through sideways, to mildly bullish. It mentions possible tailwinds including stronger commodity prices and population growth, as well as risks such as higher rates, job losses, moderating house prices, sluggish growth and geopolitical uncertainty. These are attributed views and scenarios, not an agreed market forecast; the exchange says the discussion offers no financial advice or specific share recommendations.

In a 21 September 2026 market commentary, Morningstar described volatility, persistent inflation, rising bond yields and renewed expectations of rates staying higher for longer. It estimated that the benchmark index traded at 18 times forward earnings and about 15% above Morningstar’s fair value in the context of that article. Those are Morningstar estimates from 21 September, not official exchange statistics or guaranteed October valuations.

How to decide whether any of the three merits a closer look

Use the same evidence standard for each company. A theme or a stock-picking article can suggest where to investigate; the decision depends on current company disclosures, price and your own circumstances.

  1. Start with reported performance. Read each company’s primary FY26 results and compare reported outcomes with its forward guidance. Separate delivered results from management expectations and editorial interpretation.
  2. Value the shares at a common date. Record each share price on the same date and examine valuation against forecast earnings or cash flows. Note the assumptions behind those forecasts; do not treat market-wide estimates as company-specific valuations.
  3. Check funding and investment needs. Review balance-sheet capacity, planned capital spending and whether external funding may be needed. This is especially relevant to a business building physical capacity, but it matters for any company whose plans require investment.
  4. Map sensitivities. Consider how rates, inflation, consumer or business spending, currencies, commodities and geopolitical events could affect the company in question. The relevant exposures differ by business.
  5. Test execution and company-specific risks. Look for evidence that the operating drivers behind the thesis are improving, and identify what could interrupt progress. For CSL, that includes the cited recovery drivers; for Netwealth, platform growth and revenue conversion; for NEXTDC, capacity delivery, utilisation and funding.
  6. Check fit in your portfolio. Consider your time horizon and concentration. Owning three companies in different industries does not by itself establish that a portfolio is adequately diversified or suitable for you.

The October shortlist source does not provide enough primary company evidence to complete these comparisons or support a defensible ranking. A useful next step is to fill in the checks above from company releases and current market data before deciding whether any candidate fits your plan.

What ASX adds—and what it does not add—to this shortlist

ASX Ltd (ASX:ASX) is not one of the three names in the October Motley Fool shortlist. It is relevant only as a separate candidate a reader may consider: ASIC’s March 2026 inquiry report raised governance and operational concerns about ASX’s approach to responsibilities for critical market infrastructure, and described a need to restore trust and strengthen oversight. The report also recorded work under way to reset the transformation program and refresh regulatory supervision. That report is a risk lens, not a current buy-or-sell verdict; check subsequent company and regulator updates before drawing conclusions about present conditions.
