Autumn Budget 2026: What Small Business Owners Can Expect

The UK’s Autumn Budget is scheduled for Wednesday 28 October 2026. The date is confirmed; no specific new tax cut, grant, threshold change or business-rates reform for the 2026 Budget is confirmed in the available official material. Small business owners should treat possible changes as speculation until the Chancellor announces them.

When is the Autumn Budget 2026?

UK Parliament has scheduled the Budget for Wednesday 28 October 2026. Check Parliament’s timetable close to the date, since schedules can change.

What the Budget means for small businesses

The Chancellor’s Budget statement sets out the government’s view of the nation’s finances and its tax proposals, alongside economic forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR). Parliament then debates and scrutinises tax proposals through the Finance Bill. The OBR’s forecasts inform the process; they do not guarantee what policy will be adopted. See Parliament’s explanation of the Budget.

At this stage, the official material reviewed does not establish a list of 2026 measures. Any prediction about a tax rise or cut, new relief, grant, threshold or rates reform should therefore be read as uncertain, not as settled policy.

What small business owners may want to watch

Business rates

The November 2025 Budget announced lower business-rates multipliers for more than 750,000 eligible retail, hospitality and leisure properties, which HM Treasury said would be worth nearly £900 million a year from April 2026. It also announced a £4.3 billion support package to cap increases for sectors affected by revaluation. These are figures for the 2025 Budget’s measures, not promises of new support in 2026. The details are in HM Treasury’s business-rates factsheet.

Separately, Treasury material said the government would explore ways to address business-rates cliff edges and review how Small Business Rates Relief could support growth. An exploration or review is not an adopted change; it does not confirm that the 2026 Budget will alter either policy. Follow the official business-rates guidance for applicable rules.

Tax administration and digital reporting

The 2025 Budget described changes to Making Tax Digital treatment for small taxpayer groups. It also set out £59 million of investment over five years in digital prompts in VAT filing software from April 2027 and Corporation Tax filing software from April 2028. These were earlier announcements, and they do not mean that every small business has the same digital filing obligations. Check current HMRC guidance and the 2025 Budget document for implementation details relevant to your business.

  • Eligibility: Does it apply to your business type, size, location and legal form?
  • Timing: When would it start, and is there a transition period?
  • Cash effect: How would it change your tax bill, rates bill or costs—and for which accounting period?
  • Status: Is it an announcement, a consultation or a proposal in a Finance Bill, or has it become enacted law?

Wait for the relevant official guidance and legislation before treating a Budget headline as a change you can rely on.
