A useful email marketing dashboard follows the path from delivery to recipient action, business results, and list health. Track these eight metrics together: inbox placement, click-through rate, conversion rate, revenue per email or ROI, bounce rate, unsubscribe rate, spam complaint rate, and open rate. No single benchmark fits every audience or message type, so compare like with like and use rates to diagnose questions—not to assume causes.
1. Delivery and inbox placement rate
Delivery means a message reached the recipient’s mail system. Inbox placement goes further: it estimates whether delivered mail landed in the inbox rather than spam or another folder. Keep these measures distinct; a delivery report alone does not tell you whether subscribers can readily see the message.

Use placement as a program-health indicator alongside campaign engagement. Validity’s 2026 Email Deliverability Benchmark reports an average global inbox placement rate of 87.2% for 2025, up 3.7 percentage points from the previous year. This is a cross-market vendor benchmark, not a target for every sender: Validity notes substantial variation by mailbox provider, region, and industry. Validity’s 2026 benchmark report

2. Click-through rate (CTR)
CTR measures the share of delivered messages that generated at least one click. Salesforce defines it as recipients who clicked at least one link divided by delivered messages, multiplied by 100. Because it does not rely on a recorded open, CTR is a more direct response signal than open rate.
#1 Best Overall
Salesforce offers 2%–5% as a typical CTR guide, while noting that industry, company size, and message type affect results. Its guidance puts promotional email CTRs often in the 1%–3% range and transactional email CTRs often above 5%. Treat these as Salesforce’s guidance, not universal standards. Compare similar campaigns and define whether your reporting counts unique clickers or total clicks consistently. Salesforce email marketing metrics
3. Conversion rate
Conversion rate connects an email to the action it was meant to prompt: for example, a purchase, registration, or completed lead form. Before comparing campaigns, specify the conversion event, attribution window, and denominator. A rate based on delivered messages answers a different question from one based on clickers, so report the convention rather than implying there is one universal formula.
Rank #2
When clicks look healthy but conversions do not, inspect the landing page, offer, audience fit, and attribution setup. This pattern points to places worth investigating; it does not prove which one is responsible. HubSpot includes conversion rate in its list of email analytics measures. Revenue per delivered email relates attributable revenue to the number of delivered messages, giving you a way to compare the value generated by sends. Email ROI compares returns with costs, but the result depends on which costs you include and how you attribute revenue. State the attribution rules, observation window, and cost basis whenever you report either figure; without consistent definitions, campaign comparisons can mislead.

HubSpot lists both revenue per email and overall ROI among email marketing metrics. Its captured summary does not establish a universal calculation convention, so choose and document one that fits your reporting. HubSpot email marketing metrics
5. Bounce rate
Bounces are messages that were not successfully delivered. Salesforce distinguishes temporary soft bounces from permanent hard bounces. A high aggregate bounce rate can flag list-quality or deliverability trouble, but the rate alone does not identify the cause.

Unsubscribe rate tracks the share of recipients who opt out. A change can be a signal to review content relevance, sending frequency, or targeting, but interpret it alongside acquisition source and the expectations subscribers had when they signed up. Changes that make opting out easier can also affect the rate, so consider the context before comparing periods. Salesforce email marketing metrics

7. Spam complaint rate
Spam complaints are a list-health and sender-reputation signal. Include the rate in campaign reporting and monitor its direction rather than treating engagement alone as evidence of healthy sending. Salesforce lists complaints among typical campaign metrics, and Validity identifies low complaint rates as part of bulk sender requirements. Open rate is the number of unique recorded opens divided by delivered messages, according to Salesforce. It can help show directional change, but it is not a dependable measure of human attention on its own: Apple Mail Privacy Protection can register a message as opened without the recipient actually opening it. MailerLite warns that recorded opens may be inflated and that click-to-open rate (CTOR)—clickers divided by recorded openers—is affected in turn. Use opens for cautious, like-for-like diagnostics, not as your sole success measure. Salesforce email marketing metrics MailerLite email marketing benchmarks
How to use benchmarks without misreading them
External benchmarks provide context, not a pass/fail target. First compare a campaign with its own history and a like-for-like segment. Then account for message purpose, audience or industry, and region before using a broader reference. Promotional campaigns, newsletters, and transactional emails serve different jobs, so their rates need not match.
| Measure | Reported benchmark | Scope and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Open rate | 43.46% median | MailerLite, 2025 campaign data published December 2025; medians across more than 3.6 million campaigns from 181,000 approved accounts, covering December 2024–November 2025. Apple Mail Privacy Protection affects open-related measures. |
| Click rate | 2.09% median | MailerLite, same dataset and period; platform-specific. |
| Click-to-open rate | 6.81% median | MailerLite, same dataset and period; affected by recorded-open inflation. |
| Unsubscribe rate | 0.22% median | MailerLite, same dataset and period; platform-specific. |
| CTR | 2%–5% typical guide; promotional often 1%–3%; transactional often above 5% | Salesforce guidance; results vary by industry, company size, and message type. |
| Global inbox placement | 87.2% average for 2025 | Validity’s 2026 benchmark; cross-market average with substantial variation by mailbox provider, region, and industry. |
MailerLite’s dataset spans 46 industries and seven regions and its guidance recommends taking regional differences into account. Its figures are platform medians, not universal goals. MailerLite’s benchmark methodology and results
A practical diagnostic sequence
- Check delivery and placement. Weak inbox placement or elevated bounces makes deliverability and list quality the first areas to investigate.
- Check clicks. If delivery is healthy but CTR is low, review relevance, message content, and the call to action.
- Check outcomes. If clicks occur without conversions, examine the destination page, offer, audience fit, and attribution configuration.
- Check list health. Read unsubscribes and spam complaints alongside acquisition source, targeting, and sending frequency.
- Compare fairly. Segment by message purpose, audience or industry, and region; establish consistent definitions before comparing time periods.
This sequence narrows where to look; none of these rates alone proves a cause. The dashboard is most useful when each metric has a defined denominator and role: delivery and list health establish whether sending is sound, clicks show response, and conversions and revenue connect campaigns to business goals.
