The eight platforms below are a shortlist sorted by who each one serves. Use it to narrow your options, then confirm the specific course’s details before you commit time or money.
How this shortlist was built
The platforms were compared on five practical points rather than on a shared performance score, since no independent, like-for-like outcome measure covers all eight services:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Who the course is designed for (students, teachers, corporate teams, sector workers, or the general public)
- Which practical skills it covers
- Delivery format and pace
- Language of instruction
- The type of credential issued, and whether access is restricted
Course registries also differ across countries and education systems, as the OECD noted in its 2024 analysis of training supply, so counts of courses on one platform cannot be read as a measure of quality or breadth compared with another.

Platform by platform
1. Coursera: broad university specialization
The University of Michigan’s Green Skills for a Sustainable and Just Future is a four-course series covering environmental economics, environmental justice, sustainability leadership, and GIS. It is the strongest option here for learners who want one interdisciplinary base linking policy, leadership and geospatial methods, rather than a single narrow skill. The course page describes flexible, self-paced study and a shareable certificate. The beginner-level and roughly two-month estimate were stated on the page at the time of review; confirm them, and any fees, before enrolling.
#1 Best Overall
2. UN CC:e-Learn: dedicated climate and green-economy catalog
UN CC:e-Learn is the most focused catalog in this list, centered on climate change, the green economy and the circular economy. A useful current example is Reshaping Our Economies, developed by the Partnership for Action on Green Economy. It runs about 4.5 hours and covers policy levers, green and circular economy, finance and social impacts. Learners who pass the final quiz within three attempts with a score of 70% or higher receive a United Nations certificate. The English course listing contained 66 courses when it was reviewed, and the catalog can be filtered by theme, course type and language. Certificate terms differ between course types, so check the specific course.
3. FutureLearn: a collection of short climate courses
FutureLearn’s climate-action collection lists 48 courses on topics such as environmental science, climate literacy, sustainable cities, climate and sustainability teaching, and upcycling. It combines university and partner courses, so durations, formats and certificates vary. It suits readers who prefer to pick individual short courses by topic rather than work through one specialist catalog.

4. IBM SkillsBuild: sustainability alongside digital career skills
IBM describes SkillsBuild as free online learning for adult learners, university students and high-school students. UNESCO’s Global Skills Academy listing for IBM identifies a “Green Skills: Sustainability” offering, with self-paced online learning and IBM digital credentials. This makes it a sensible choice if you want sustainability knowledge combined with digital career training. The available sources do not establish how deep or broad each sustainability course is, so judge the course content directly.
5. UN Global Compact Academy: for business sustainability teams
The Academy’s on-demand courses, webinars, learning paths and company case examples are tied to sustainability challenges, the Sustainable Development Goals and the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact. The Academy describes itself as “the UN Global Compact’s digital learning platform helping business leaders develop practical skills to tackle sustainability challenges and drive impact aligned with the SDGs and the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact.” That statement is institutional; the page does not attribute it to a named speaker. Access is the deciding factor: employees of participating business organizations have unlimited access, while a selection of learning experiences is open to everyone.
Rank #3
6. European School Education Platform: teacher training
The platform lists Green Skills For A Better Environment, designed to help teachers build practical sustainability competencies for school life and classroom teaching. Its subject areas include climate change, waste, energy use and biodiversity, delivered through practical and collaborative activities. The listed session ran from 3 to 9 August 2026 and has ended, so treat the listing as evidence of relevant content rather than an open enrollment window.
7. Gnowbe: sector-specific sustainability courses
Gnowbe’s Sustainability & Green Business category contains 13 courses. Examples include reducing food waste, sustainable supply chains, sustainable building design, sustainable facility management and fleet specifications. It is the most applied option on the list for workers who need job-specific content. The catalog establishes the course topics, but it does not show whether every course is open to individual learners or sold under a single price.
8. UNSSC: free catalogue for digital and green transition
The UN System Staff College’s 2025–2026 free-course catalogue includes a Digital4Sustainability Learning Path, which fits readers interested in how digital skills support the green transition. Because this information comes from a dated catalogue rather than a current course page, confirm that the path is still open and review its intended audience before you register.
Matching a platform to your goal
- Climate policy or green-economy knowledge: start with UN CC:e-Learn, then compare FutureLearn’s short climate courses.
- An interdisciplinary university-style foundation including GIS: Coursera’s Michigan series is the most direct match.
- Classroom sustainability practice: the European School Education Platform course, provided a new session is announced.
- Sustainability implementation in a company: the UN Global Compact Academy, if your organization participates.
- Sector-specific workplace practice such as facilities, supply chains or fleets: Gnowbe’s category.
- Sustainability combined with career-oriented digital skills, at no cost: IBM SkillsBuild.
A teacher, a business sustainability team and a learner seeking GIS or climate-policy skills need different course designs. Do not treat these eight options as teaching identical skills.

Access, costs and what a certificate means
Access differs more than the course descriptions suggest. IBM describes its SkillsBuild learning as free. UN CC:e-Learn lists both free and paid certificate options. The UN Global Compact Academy limits unlimited access to employees of participating organizations. The UNSSC catalogue is free, but dated. Coursera, FutureLearn and Gnowbe sources did not establish a single pricing model for every course.
A certificate is not academic credit or a professional license. The sources establish certificates or digital credentials for some offerings, not universal recognition. Before treating any of them as a hiring qualification, confirm the issuer, how the course is assessed, and whether your employer or licensing body recognizes it.
Figures and what they do not show
- Over 60 learning resources in 15 languages: the UN CC:Learn platform description at the time of review. The same page reports more than 991,700 registrations in 2024.
- 84% of responses reported applying course knowledge and skills frequently or occasionally: from UN CC:Learn’s early-2025 alumni impact survey. This is a self-reported result and does not prove the courses caused the behavior.
- 66 course listings: the English UN CC:e-Learn catalog at the time of review.
- 48 courses: the FutureLearn climate-action collection at the time of review.
- 13 courses: the Gnowbe Sustainability & Green Business category at the time of review.
No comparable, independent outcome statistic covers all eight services. Course counts and registrations describe catalog size and reach, not learning effectiveness.

- Open the course page, not the platform’s category page, and note the start date or whether the course is self-paced.
- Confirm the language of instruction and any subtitles or translations offered.
- Check eligibility, especially for corporate-only or institution-only access.
- Read the certificate terms: the issuer, the passing score, the number of quiz attempts, and whether a certificate costs extra.
- Confirm any charges, including fees for the certificate, before you start.
- Check whether the course is still in the current catalog, particularly for dated listings such as the UNSSC path and the European School Education Platform session.
Course catalogs and access terms change, so the details on any listing can differ from what is described here.
