1. VLC for Android: best broad-compatibility starting point
VideoLAN’s official VLC for Android feature page says the app supports “Subtitles support, embedded and external, including ASS and DVD subtitles.” It also supports choosing among multiple audio and subtitle tracks, which is useful when a movie contains more than one language or caption track.

The Google Play listing describes VLC as free and open source, with no ads or in-app purchases, and lists subtitles, teletext, closed captions and multiple tracks. It also supports network streams, NAS devices and shared drives, so it can suit viewers whose videos are not stored only on the phone.
VideoLAN’s download page identifies version 3.7.0 and Android 4.2 or later for the current version. That version and minimum Android requirement may change. VLC is not a guarantee that every video will play: VideoLAN notes that hardware decoding is not supported on all devices.

2. MX Player: best for subtitle formats and direct controls
The Google Play listing for MX Player names an extensive set of subtitle formats, including SSA/ASS with full styling. It also describes gestures for moving to the previous or next subtitle line, changing caption position vertically and resizing captions. Those controls are a useful distinction if the captions technically load but are poorly positioned or difficult to read.
Load a subtitle file
- Open and play the local video in MX Player.
- Tap the Closed Caption icon.
- Select a subtitle in the video’s folder, or browse to the folder where the subtitle is stored.
These steps come from MX Player Support’s instructions for locally downloaded videos. The same page says that if no subtitle file is available, the app’s “Online Subtitles” option can be used to download one. Whether that option is available may depend on the app and market.

The listing identifies Amazon Mobile LLC as the developer and reports an update on September 25, 2026. MX Player’s support page also says Amazon MX Player is joining Prime Video; check the listing in your region for current branding and availability. Google Play says the app uses Storage / All Files Access to find and play media and subtitle files. It describes some other permissions as related to file transfer and says they can be denied without losing other app functionality; this does not mean every listed permission is required just to load subtitles.
3. Just Player: simplest sidecar-subtitle workflow
Just Player’s project documentation lists SRT, SSA/ASS (with limited styling), TTML, VTT and DVB subtitle support. To have it load external subtitles, long-press the file-open action and select the root folder containing the video; the project FAQ says the player can then automatically load external subtitle files.

For caption appearance, the project points users to Android’s system Caption preferences, where font, size and color can be controlled. That makes Just Player a straightforward option if you prefer system-level styling over gesture-based adjustments within the player.
Subtitle support does not establish that every video itself is compatible. The project says upstream ExoPlayer does not handle some older formats, including WMV and Theora, and that most devices cannot handle 10-bit AVC. Playback therefore depends on the particular file and the device.

Embedded subtitles and separate subtitle files are different
An embedded subtitle track is included inside the video file. A sidecar subtitle is a separate file, often stored alongside the video. A player may support one workflow without making the other equally easy: VLC documents both embedded and external subtitles, while MX Player gives steps for choosing a separate file and Just Player documents automatic loading from a selected video folder.
