Tool-Calling Agents: When Byte-Faithful Pass-Through Is the Better Default

Byte-faithful pass-through is a strong default for agent gateways that do not need to alter tool calls. Translate only for a concrete validation, policy, or compatibility requirement—and define what your boundary preserves.

For an agent gateway that only transports, logs, or routes tool calls, passing the payload through without translating it is usually the safer default: it avoids an unnecessary mapping that could omit or alter fields. Translation is still the right choice when you need to validate, enforce policy, or bridge incompatible interfaces. This is an architectural recommendation, not a proven benchmark showing pass-through is always more reliable.

What pass-through preserves—and what “byte-faithful” can mean

In the documented MCP flow, a server publishes tool definitions and handles calls; the agent platform discovers tools, invokes the server, and returns results to the agent. MCP standardizes the server-facing tool interface, while the platform coordinates discovery and execution. OpenAI’s MCP connection documentation describes this flow, and Anthropic’s MCP overview describes MCP as an open protocol for connecting applications and language models to context and tools.

A tool result can contain more than user-visible text. MCP SDK documentation distinguishes content intended for the model, machine-readable structuredContent, and application-oriented _meta. The Python SDK also documents validation of structured results against a declared output schema. An adapter that forwards only text, drops metadata, coerces structured values, or changes an error into a success-shaped response can change the contract even if the visible text appears unchanged. See the Python SDK server documentation and the TypeScript SDK tool documentation.

Be precise about the fidelity you require. “Byte-faithful” might mean retaining raw wire bytes, preserving parsed protocol objects, or preserving application-level values after an SDK has interpreted a message. Those are different guarantees: SDKs may consume protocol bookkeeping fields, and protocol-era changes can alter how structured output is represented. The TypeScript SDK migration guide documents version-related conversion behavior, while its protocol revision support documentation explains that some wire-level fields are handled at the protocol layer rather than passed to application code. Define the boundary before claiming preservation.

When to pass tool calls through unchanged

Prefer pass-through when the intermediary does not need to change a tool definition, its arguments, a result, an error, or an authorization decision. This is most compelling for a gateway whose role is transport, routing, or observability: fewer transformations mean fewer mappings to maintain. Make logs and traces additive instead of rewriting the payload, and retain the original representation as far downstream as the system permits.

This does not establish that every translation loses data, or that pass-through is universally more reliable. The narrower case is that avoiding an unneeded mapping removes one compatibility risk. The SDK documentation describes transformations and validation, but does not publish a head-to-head reliability or performance comparison between the two designs.

When protocol translation is worth the boundary

Translate when there is a concrete requirement the intermediary must satisfy, rather than simply because it can. Common reasons include exposing one provider’s tools through another interface, validating arguments or structured output, enforcing a policy boundary, or routing based on fields the intermediary must inspect. OpenAI documents both hosted and environment-run MCP connections, as well as remote MCP and Secure MCP Tunnel options; these can shape where a gateway belongs, but do not by themselves require payload translation. See OpenAI’s MCP connection guide and its MCP server guidance.

If translation is necessary, make the mapping an explicit contract:

  • Map known fields deliberately and preserve unknown or extension fields when the target protocol permits it.
  • Specify how content blocks, structured results, metadata, and errors are represented; do not silently turn one result type into another.
  • Define behavior for each supported schema and protocol version, including fields the target cannot represent.
  • Validate at the intended boundary, and make clear which side rejects malformed or unauthorized calls.
  • Test representative round trips, including structured output, metadata, error responses, and version differences.

This is engineering guidance inferred from documented SDK and protocol behavior, not a normative MCP requirement.

How to compare gateway designs

Use these questions to evaluate pass-through and translation against the actual responsibilities of your system:

  • Fidelity: Are tool names, arguments, content blocks, structured results, metadata, and error status retained?
  • Version tolerance: What happens when a client or server adds a field or changes a wire encoding?
  • Validation and safety: Where are schemas checked, and where are approval and authorization policies enforced?
  • Execution placement: Does the call run through a hosted service, a reachable remote server, or a private or local environment?
  • Debuggability: Can logs and traces capture calls without mutating their payloads?

Approval policy and execution location remain separate design decisions from payload fidelity. OpenAI documents that MCP calls can run automatically or require explicit developer approval, and describes remote and private-server connection paths in its MCP server documentation. Passing bytes through unchanged does not decide whether a call is safe or where it should execute.

Practical decision

Start with pass-through if the intermediary has no semantic job to do: it should move the call, observe it, or route it without changing its meaning. Add translation only for a requirement such as schema validation, permission enforcement, or interface compatibility, then define exactly which representation and fields the translation must preserve. Choose the boundary deliberately; neither architecture eliminates the need to test the protocol versions and SDKs you support.
