A client timeout means the caller stopped waiting; it does not prove that a shared tool call failed, stopped running, or lost its lease. Treat the operation as in doubt until its authoritative state is known. Preserve its identity, check who currently owns the right to commit, and replay only when the tool’s idempotency and lease rules make that safe.
Does a timeout mean the operation failed?
No. After a timeout, the request may never have reached the tool, may still be executing, or may have committed even though its response was lost. Apache Kudu describes this uncertainty for RPCs that fail because of a timeout or network failure: the sender may not know whether the original operation succeeded (Apache Kudu RPC retry and failover design).

A client timer and a worker lease are separate state. The client can time out while the worker still holds a valid lease. Conversely, a worker can finish after a newer lease or conversation epoch has taken ownership. A late result should not be allowed to change shared state unless its lease and generation or epoch still authorize that write. The exact lease and commit rules depend on the runtime; they cannot be inferred from the timeout alone.

What should I do when a tool call times out?
Mark the logical operation as in doubt, not failed. Then reconcile its status before deciding whether to wait, return a recorded result, retry, or stop for inspection. The following is a recovery pattern, not a claim that every tool runtime exposes these exact states or APIs.

- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
- Record the ambiguity. Keep the operation in an unresolved state rather than converting a client-side timer into a failure result.
- Preserve its identity. Retain the same operation or idempotency key and normalized request fingerprint. Do not generate a new key just because the response was lost.
- Ask the authority that owns the operation. Query the durable operation journal or coordinator for its state, if the system provides that facility. The lookup API and status names are implementation-specific.
- Validate ownership before accepting a late result. Check that the completing worker’s lease and generation or epoch still authorize the commit. Reject stale work rather than letting an old call mutate shared state.
- Choose recovery based on what is known. Reuse a recorded result if committed; wait or use the documented cancellation protocol if still running; retry with the same identity if it is known not to have been dispatched. If the outcome remains unknown and the effect is non-idempotent, stop automatic replay and surface the unresolved operation for inspection or compensation.
Can I safely retry a timed-out request?
Only if the operation is safe to repeat or the receiver provides effective idempotency. A read may be repeatable, while a write that triggers an external side effect—such as sending a payment instruction or creating a resource—may not be. Classify the effect rather than assuming every tool call behaves alike.
Retry policies also need a precise scope. AWS’s Durable Execution SDK guide warns that “Replay and retry can each run the same operation more than once.” Its guidance distinguishes at-least-once behavior, which is appropriate for idempotent operations, from at-most-once behavior intended for side effects where automatic re-execution is unsafe. These are SDK-specific semantics, not a universal guarantee. In particular, at-most-once for one attempt does not mean a workflow-level retry policy cannot start another attempt.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
What makes an idempotency key useful?
The key must identify the same logical operation across reconciliation and permitted retries, and the receiver must durably recognize duplicates. Pairing it with a normalized request fingerprint lets the receiver detect misuse: if the same key arrives with a conflicting payload, reject it rather than treating it as the original operation. A key that changes on every retry cannot deduplicate those attempts.
For example, TDE Security documents a product-specific design in which mutating-tool requests are recorded in a durable idempotency journal, scoped by tool name and key, and checked against normalized-command fingerprints. It describes returning an operation_outcome_unknown signal if a result cannot be persisted after dispatch, directing the caller to inspect state rather than retry blindly (TDE Security documentation). Those details illustrate one implementation; they are not requirements or behavior that can be assumed of another runtime.

How do leases and idempotency work together?
They address different failure modes. Idempotency helps prevent the same logical operation from taking effect twice. A lease or fencing check helps prevent a worker that no longer owns the operation from committing. A robust shared-tool design needs to account for both: a duplicate request can arrive while the first worker is still active, and an old worker can return after a new owner has taken over.
Before accepting a completion, the coordinator or receiver should validate the current ownership generation at commit time—not rely only on the worker’s local belief that its lease remains valid. If the operation belongs to an earlier conversation epoch, its late completion should not be appended to the newer turn. This is a design principle; the exact enforcement mechanism depends on the system’s contract.

How long can deduplication protect a retry?
Deduplication is only as durable as its record-retention policy. Apache Kudu’s retry design documents a specific case in which a response record can be garbage-collected before a delayed retry arrives; in that situation, the operation can execute twice. That caveat is specific to Kudu’s described design, but the general question applies to any deduplication system: does its retention horizon cover the longest possible retry or recovery delay?
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDocument the key’s scope and lifetime, the deduplication retention period, and what happens after that period. Do not promise exactly-once external effects unless the external receiver enforces the propagated identity or fencing condition. A local journal cannot by itself guarantee that a separate system performed an external effect only once.

How do I prevent a duplicate tool call after a timeout?
- Keep a stable operation identity and normalized payload fingerprint for the logical call.
- Use a durable receiver-side deduplication record, and reject reuse of a key with a different payload.
- Check authoritative operation state before replaying an unknown result.
- Validate current lease ownership and generation or epoch at commit time so stale workers cannot write.
- Set recovery behavior around the deduplication record’s actual retention horizon.
- For non-idempotent effects with an unknown outcome, stop automatic retries and provide an inspection or compensation path.
These controls reduce duplicate and stale writes, but the guarantee depends on the full path. If an external service does not accept the operation identity or a fencing condition, the tool runtime cannot claim exactly-once behavior for that external effect.
