Short answer: Tomb Kings build their empire around free basic skeletons, dynasty research, building-based unit capacity, rites and, in the Eye of the Vortex campaign, the Books of Nagash. Vampire Counts instead depend on vampiric corruption, raise-dead recruitment and armies that replace ranged firepower with magic, melee pressure, terror, flanking cavalry and flying units.
Those systems create very different campaigns. Tomb Kings reward deliberate infrastructure and long-term army planning; Vampire Counts reward momentum, corruption management and exploiting battlefields where their magic and monsters can overwhelm enemies. Exact unit balance depends on the game edition and patch, so this is a faction-identity and campaign-systems comparison rather than a current tier list.

At a glance: the decisive differences
| Comparison | Tomb Kings | Vampire Counts |
|---|---|---|
| Basic recruitment | Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Spearmen are free, unlimited basic recruits. | Raise Dead supplies units after battles and can recruit full units on the campaign map. |
| How additional armies are unlocked | Researching one of six major Nehekharan dynasties grants another army slot; a stronger dynasty lord can be unlocked with Canopic Jars. | The cited roster material emphasizes corruption and raise-dead access rather than a dynasty-style army-slot system. |
| Elite-unit capacity | Buildings unlock units and provide initial capacity. Losing those settlements can reduce capacity, but units already in armies are unaffected. | The reviewed source does not establish an equivalent capacity system. |
| Campaign pressure | Limited basic infrastructure economy, settlement development and dynasty research shape expansion. | Vampiric corruption supports operations, while uncorrupted territory can cause attrition according to the legacy roster source. |
| Battlefield identity | Skeleton screens support constructs, chariots and specialized large units. | No ranged weapons in the cited roster description; relies on magic, melee, flanking cavalry, terror and flying units. |
| Source confidence | Campaign and battle details come mainly from Total War Academy material for Total War: WARHAMMER II. | Core identity and raise-dead details come from a legacy Total War Wiki roster page and should be checked against the target edition and patch. |
How the Tomb Kings campaign works
Free skeletons are the foundation, not the finished army
Tomb Kings begin with an unusually dependable basic recruitment model. Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Spearmen are free and unlimited, giving every army a permanent supply of infantry bodies. That does not make them disposable in every situation: they still occupy army slots, take time to replace and can collapse quickly against superior troops. Their main value is holding an enemy in place, protecting vulnerable units and buying time for constructs or other damage dealers.

The Total War Academy describes the distinction directly: “Skeleton Warriors and spearmen are best suited to holding back the mortals, not cutting them down, so don’t rely on them to do any heavy lifting.” Treat that as the central Tomb Kings battle rule. Build the front line cheaply, then spend your strategic attention on the units that actually decide engagements.

Buildings control the quality and number of specialized units
Units beyond the basic skeletons require the appropriate buildings. Those structures also grant initial capacity for the units they unlock. This creates a two-part development problem: you need the settlement chain to make a unit available, and you need enough capacity to field more copies of it.
Settlement losses therefore have a specific consequence. Capturing or losing a settlement with a relevant military building can change your available capacity. Existing units in the field are not removed when that capacity falls, so an established army can survive a setback even while your ability to replace losses or create another army is reduced. Protecting recruitment settlements matters more than merely owning territory for income.
Dynasty research is the route to more commanders
Tomb Kings do not simply add armies as their empire grows. Researching one of the six major Nehekharan dynasties grants an additional army slot. Later dynasty research takes longer, while capturing settlements improves research speed. The result is a campaign that asks you to choose between immediate military development and the long-term research that permits another full force.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCanopic Jars can be spent to unlock a stronger dynasty lord. Because commanders are tied to the faction’s broader army-capacity progression, Canopic Jar spending is a strategic decision rather than a cosmetic upgrade. Save enough for the lord or dynasty option that supports the kind of campaign you are actually running, especially if you are trying to defend several fronts.
Rites provide strategic tools rather than a single universal bonus
Tomb Kings rites cover several campaign needs. Depending on the rite, they can support stronger armies, help colonize ruins, inflict sandstorm attrition on invaders or improve regional growth. Select them according to the next strategic problem: a threatened province, a newly conquered ruin or a planned offensive may each justify a different rite.

The economy favors broad, inexpensive development
The Tomb Kings basic economy offers comparatively limited infrastructure options. The practical implication is to develop inexpensive income across regions instead of expecting a small number of highly specialized settlements to solve every financial problem. Military buildings must be weighed against the income and growth buildings that keep research, construction and multiple armies moving.
Books of Nagash are specific to the Eye of the Vortex guidance
In the Eye of the Vortex campaign described by Total War Academy, the Books of Nagash form part of the victory path connected to the Black Pyramid. Other factions or rogue armies hold the books, and each grants a different bonus. The effects are randomized at campaign start, so you cannot assume that every campaign will present the same reward map or priority order.
Do not automatically apply this objective to every Tomb Kings campaign mode. The Books of Nagash requirement belongs to the cited Eye of the Vortex guidance; another mode may use different objectives.
How the Vampire Counts campaign works
Corruption is both an operating condition and a provincial problem
The legacy Vampire Counts roster description presents vampiric corruption as a central campaign mechanic. Travelling through uncorrupted territory causes attrition in that description, so an army operating outside friendly corruption can lose strength before it reaches a battle. Heroes can be sent ahead to spread corruption, creating a safer route for the main army.
Corruption also affects provinces more broadly. Total War Academy explains that excessive Chaos, Vampiric or Skaven corruption can cause unrest, attrition and eventually an uprising. Heroes, corruption buildings, lord skills and garrisoned armies can help manage those effects. This means corruption is not simply a movement tax for enemies: it changes the risk profile of provinces you control and provinces you invade.

Raise Dead turns battles into recruitment opportunities
Raise Dead is the defining contrast with Tomb Kings’ building-and-capacity progression. The reviewed roster source describes raising the dead during battle and recruiting full units on the campaign map. A damaged army can therefore recover differently from a conventional faction: a recent battle may create a local pool of available troops, allowing a commander to rebuild without waiting for a distant military settlement.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchBecause the source is a legacy wiki page, treat the exact conditions, unit availability and replenishment rules as edition- and patch-sensitive. The strategic identity remains clear: Vampire Counts can use the aftermath of fighting to sustain an offensive, while Tomb Kings depend more visibly on their settlement buildings, capacity and dynasty progression.
Momentum matters more than a tidy frontier
Vampire Counts campaigns are naturally suited to operations that keep moving through hostile territory, provided corruption and replenishment are managed. A stalled army in uncorrupted land can suffer before it finds the next target. Heroes that prepare the route, corruption-supporting infrastructure and timely raise-dead recruitment reduce that risk. The faction is less about creating a clean, conventional supply line and more about making conquered and contested territory usable for undead operations.
Army growth and recovery: a practical comparison
| Question | Tomb Kings | Vampire Counts |
|---|---|---|
| How do I field the first line? | Recruit free Skeleton Warriors or Skeleton Spearmen. | Use the faction’s available undead roster and raise-dead access; exact pools depend on edition and campaign conditions. |
| How do I add another army? | Research a major dynasty to gain an army slot. | No dynasty-style rule is established by the reviewed source; plan around the edition’s own lord and army rules. |
| How do I unlock elite units? | Construct the relevant buildings and maintain their capacity. | The reviewed source does not document an equivalent capacity framework. |
| What happens after losing a recruitment settlement? | Relevant capacity can fall, but units already deployed remain in their armies. | Check the target version’s rules; the cited source does not provide a matching settlement-capacity explanation. |
| How do I recover after fighting? | Use normal replenishment and the faction’s healing mechanics, while preserving the buildings and capacity needed for replacements. | Raise Dead can provide campaign-map recruitment and, in the cited description, units can be raised during battle. |
| What threatens an army on the campaign map? | Expansion pace, research time, settlement losses and limited infrastructure choices. | Uncorrupted terrain can cause attrition in the legacy description; corruption and provincial unrest must be managed. |
How Tomb Kings armies fight
Skeletons hold; they do not carry the damage plan
Skeleton infantry are numerous but fragile. Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Spearmen are best used to pin an enemy, screen valuable units and preserve formation integrity. They are poor substitutes for a dedicated damage dealer. If you send them unsupported into elite infantry, cavalry or monsters, the line may occupy the enemy briefly but will not reliably win the engagement.
Realm of Souls rewards surviving formations
As Tomb Kings units take casualties, the Realm of Souls heals surviving units and can eventually summon Ushabti. This makes preservation valuable even when a unit is not dealing much damage. A skeleton unit that holds long enough for healing and a later summon may contribute more than one that is thrown away in an early attack.

Constructs supply the force’s consequential battlefield roles
Tomb Kings armies are divided into undead and constructs, a distinction that matters because some abilities apply to only one category. Constructs and other specialized large units provide the roles that the basic skeleton line lacks: concentrated damage, anti-large pressure, durability and the ability to break a stalemate.
The Total War Academy’s examples illustrate the matchups. A Warsphinx is suited to fighting infantry, while a Necrosphinx is aimed at monsters or cavalry. These are role decisions, not a universal ranking: choose the construct according to what the opposing army is actually presenting.
Chariots need room to operate
Chariots benefit from their larger unit sizes, but dense infantry can trap them. Keep lanes open, charge through exposed edges and withdraw before a blob surrounds them. A chariot that remains embedded in a packed line loses the mobility that justifies taking it.

No ranged weapons means a different damage sequence
The cited Vampire Counts roster description gives the faction no ranged weapons. It therefore cannot reproduce a conventional plan of screening missile troops while firing safely from behind. Damage must come from contact, spells, charges, terror effects, flying attacks and the cumulative pressure of undead units that do not depend on conventional morale.
Magic is a central battlefield resource
Powerful magic is one of the roster’s defining strengths in the reviewed description. Spells can soften a formation, punish a tightly packed enemy or create the opening for a melee engagement. The exact spell list and balance are version-dependent, but the army concept is stable: magic compensates for the absence of ranged fire and amplifies the faction’s close-range threats.

Flanking cavalry and flying units create the openings
Fast cavalry can attack exposed sides, chase vulnerable targets or force an opponent to turn away from the main infantry fight. Flying units add another angle of attack, allowing Vampire Counts to pressure artillery-like targets, isolated characters or rear areas where a ground line cannot respond quickly.
Terror and panic immunity change engagement behavior
Terror-causing units can disrupt enemies that are vulnerable to fear effects, while the roster description highlights panic immunity for Vampire Counts forces. That combination lets the faction keep applying pressure in situations where a living army might retreat. It does not make every unit invulnerable: damage, positioning and spell timing still determine whether the pressure succeeds.
Head-to-head by battlefield role
| Role | Tomb Kings approach | Vampire Counts approach |
|---|---|---|
| Front line | Large numbers of free skeletons absorb contact and screen more valuable units. | Melee infantry maintain pressure while magic and terror help break the opponent’s formation. |
| Primary damage | Constructs, specialized large units and well-used chariots. | Magic, melee units, cavalry charges, terror units and flying attacks. |
| Anti-infantry | Warsphinx-type specialized large units and supporting constructs; skeletons mainly hold. | Magic and massed melee pressure, with terror or flanking attacks used to destabilize the line. |
| Anti-large | Necrosphinx-type specialist and other suitable constructs. | Concentrated melee, spells, cavalry or flying attacks; exact tools vary by roster version. |
| Mobility | Chariots and selected large units, with a risk of becoming trapped in dense infantry. | Fast-flanking cavalry and flying units are emphasized by the roster description. |
| Ranged game | The supplied Tomb Kings material focuses on skeleton screens and constructs rather than establishing a broad ranged comparison. | The cited roster description explicitly says Vampire Counts have no ranged weapons. |
Which faction suits which campaign style?
Choose Tomb Kings if you like planned escalation
- You want basic armies built around free infantry while you work toward stronger constructs.
- You enjoy making settlement-building choices that determine elite-unit capacity.
- You prefer a visible long-term progression through dynasty research and Canopic Jar spending.
- You want rites that answer different strategic problems instead of one permanent faction bonus.
- You are playing Eye of the Vortex and want an objective structure involving the Books of Nagash and the Black Pyramid.
Choose Vampire Counts if you like aggressive sustain
- You want corruption and movement through hostile territory to be part of your operational planning.
- You prefer recruiting from the aftermath of battles through raise-dead mechanics.
- You enjoy armies with no conventional ranged weapons, compensated by magic, melee, terror, cavalry and flying units.
- You like forcing the opponent to react to multiple attack angles rather than winning through a missile line.
- You are comfortable checking edition-specific rules because the clearest raise-dead details in the available source are from a legacy roster page.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not judge Tomb Kings by skeleton kill counts
The basic infantry’s job is usually to hold and screen. A low damage total does not mean the unit failed if it kept an enemy occupied while a construct reached the correct target.
Do not spend every Tomb Kings resource on the first attractive upgrade
Dynasty research, Canopic Jars, military buildings and income construction all compete for strategic attention. An immediate elite unit is less useful if it leaves you unable to support another army or replace losses after a settlement is lost.
Do not march Vampire Counts armies through uncorrupted territory without a plan
Under the legacy description, that travel can cause attrition. Send heroes ahead, spread corruption and identify where replenishment or raise-dead access will come from before committing to a long invasion.
Do not assume either faction has a permanent balance advantage
The supplied material does not establish current-patch rankings, win rates or a unit-by-unit balance verdict. A construct-heavy Tomb Kings army and a magic-and-terror Vampire Counts army solve different battlefield problems; the better choice depends on campaign objectives, map position, enemy composition and the exact game version.
Version and source boundaries
The Tomb Kings campaign and battle guidance summarized here comes primarily from Total War Academy material for Total War: WARHAMMER II. The Vampire Counts identity, corruption travel warning and raise-dead description come from a legacy Total War Wiki roster page. Those Vampire Counts mechanics should be verified in the edition and patch you intend to play, especially recruitment conditions, unit pools and corruption effects.
Recommended Free Tools
Nothing in the available material supports a current numerical ranking of the two factions, a definitive best army list or a universal claim that one side wins every matchup. The reliable comparison is structural: Tomb Kings scale through dynasty research, buildings, capacity and constructs; Vampire Counts operate through corruption, raise-dead sustain, magic and melee pressure without ranged weapons.
